"I am convinced that the crisis in the Church that we are experiencing today is to a large extent due to the disintegration of the liturgy" (Cardinal Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI)
+ + +
"We went from having a liturgy that was rejected by heretics to one that heretics freely use; from one considered outstanding in beauty to one called 'banal'. We went from one that was holy, reverent, and universal to one that is often irreverent - even invalid - and divisive; from one that was controlled to one that is often 'out of control'. We went from enjoying the richest of fruits to suffering from many bitter fruits. Considering that the Mass is the 'heartbeat of the Church', it is clear that the 'health' of the Mass affects the Church at large. As our enemies have always known, 'It's the Mass that matters!'" - Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGreat book! ALL Catholics should read this. I would like to share this book with every Catholic I know. I wish everyone knew what has been taken away from us so we can finally get back what has been lost.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI bought this book because a friend of mine attends a Catholic church which has the Latin Mass and I thought I’d get some insight.
The book, however, is just a bitter screed against anyone who does not think exactly as the authors.
The authors -who are nameless - misuse scripture – when they use it at all - and make statements which are blasphemous, a religious abomination, or just false.
The problems with this book are almost unending, but I'll just put forth a few at random.
They disdain “Protest-ant” hymns but could they find anything un-Catholic in Luther’s “A mighty fortress is our God”? No, but they prefer poorly sung Gregorian Chants.
The authors claim some parts of the Mass go back to the Apostolic age – which closed at about 100 AD with the death of St. John. There’s no historical evidence for this. Christian services were simple ceremonies with took place in the homes of wealthier Christians.
They quote scripture about 35 times in 300 pages – not counting repetitions – but there are dozens and dozens of other quotes – some anonymous – from various people. The Catholic Church doctrine states the Bible is inerrant. But it does not state that about human opinions.
They use non-canonical sources, like Ecclesiasticus, to support their beliefs but these books are not binding on either Catholics or Protestants.
To buttress their belief that people should kneel at the alter railing they quote Luke 18 – The Pharisee stood and prayed --- indicating his standing denoted his haughty attitude toward God. But a few words later it reads – But the tax collector STOOD afar off --- so this negates their argument.
The authors say some Protestant denominations allow members to participate in the Eucharist – post Vatican 2 – but this if false. Even the Episcopal Church does not allow this, except in extremis or with the approval of a local bishop.
The authors state the Eucharist stands above scripture – page 104. This is heretical.
On page 114 they quote a previously unknown St. James – as it’s not James the brother of St. John or James the son of Alpheus, one of the Apostles, or James the brother of Jesus – who states that the Eucharist is “when Christ our God is about to be sacrificed.” This is a religious abomination.
Paul writes in Romans 6 that Christ died ONCE for all. The idea of sacrificing Christ over and over repugnant.
Have the authors ever thought about how a Latin Mass would go over in, say, Tanzania, rather than a Mass in the local language?
The authors think the Latin Mass is some kind of cure-all for the Church’s problems. But when the Latin Mass was celebrated all over the US prior to 1970 some of the most wicked and evil people in this country – Mafia, Cosa Nostra, the Kennedy’s – attended Mass regularly and it didn’t help one bit.
Think about it.
