[Copied From Original Letter]
November 4, 2025 His Holiness Pope Leo XIV Apostolic Palace 00120 Città Del Vaticano Vatican City State Most Holy Father, With profound respect and filial devotion, I humbly write to Your Holiness regarding a matter of great concern. More specifically, as a Catholic who simply wants to worship in fidelity to Catholic tradition, I am asking you to immediately & entirely revoke Pope Francis' Motu Proprio Traditionis Custodes and all related documents. As your predecessor Pope John Paul II said... "...respect must everywhere be shown for the feelings of all those who are attached to the Latin liturgical tradition" As another predecessor of yours, Cardinal Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI, said... "A community is calling its very being into question when it suddenly declares that what until now was its holiest and highest possession is strictly forbidden and when it makes the longing for it seem downright indecent." Cardinal Ratzinger also referred to the individual that you recently declared a Doctor of the Church... "It is good to recall here what Cardinal Newman observed, that the Church, throughout her history, has never abolished or forbidden orthodox liturgical forms. [To do so] would be quite alien to the Spirit of the Church." (Cardinal Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI) And as the Second Vatican Council stated... "Finally, in faithful obedience to tradition, the sacred Council declares that Holy Mother Church holds all (!!!) lawfully recognized rites to be of equal right and dignity; that she wishes to preserve them in the future and to foster them in every way." (Second Vatican Council, Sacrosanctum Concilium, The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, December 4, 1963) And, of course, the perpetual provision for this ancient Mass from your predecessor Pope St. Pius V... "Furthermore, by these presents [this law], in virtue of Our Apostolic authority, We grant and concede in perpetuity that, for the chanting or reading of the Mass in any church whatsoever, this Missal is hereafter to be followed absolutely, without any scruple of conscience or fear of incurring any penalty, judgment, or censure, and may freely and lawfully be used. Nor are superiors, administrators, canons, chaplains, and other secular priests, or religious, of whatever title designated, obliged to celebrate the Mass otherwise than as enjoined by Us. We likewise declare and ordain that no one whosoever is forced or coerced to alter this Missal, and that this present document cannot be revoked or modified, but remain always valid and retain its full force notwithstanding the previous constitutions and decrees of the Holy See, as well as any general or special constitutions or edicts of provincial or synodal councils, and notwithstanding the practice and custom of the aforesaid churches, established by long and immemorial prescription... Therefore, no one whosoever is permitted to alter this notice of Our permission, statute, ordinance, command, precept, grant, indult, declaration, will, decree, and prohibition. Should any person venture to do so, let him understand that he will incur the wrath of Almighty God and of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul." (Pope St. Pius V, "Quo Primum") With humble trust in your goodness and fairness, I also remind you that Catholic laity are supposed to have rights under Canon Law. For example... 1983 Code of Canon Law Can. 214: "The Christian faithful have the right to worship God according to the prescripts of their own rite approved by the legitimate pastors of the Church and to follow their own form of spiritual life so long as it is consonant with the doctrine of the Church." Obviously, the Traditional Latin ('Tridentine') Mass, used for so many centuries, is consonant with the doctrine of the Church. In fact, the incomparable Traditional Latin Mass is a precious treasure handed down to us as our birthright. Yet since Pope Francis' document Traditionis Custodes, our liturgical rights seem to have been denied to us and we have been treated as second class citizens in the Church - all for the 'crime' of wanting to worship as our grandparents did. As our new Holy Father who seems committed to justice and goodness, we ask you now to immediately stop the persecution and deprivation we have experienced for simply wanting to worship in the way we find best suited to us - the same liturgy countless saints have worshipped in. I say boldly that we NEED this ancient Mass. We are well-educated in the faith and have experienced from this particular liturgy the highest of spiritual fruits. To have it taken from us is a grave injustice. Please restore to us, faithful Catholics, the spiritual nourishment we receive from this highly reverent, traditional Mass. As our new Holy Father, please end the unprecedented action of your predecessor that has deprived faithful Catholics of their lawful aspirations and has caused us, God's children, so much suffering. We trust you will hear the cries of your spiritual children in this very important matter & immediately and completely revoke Traditionis Custodes. Thank you & God bless you, [Name Withheld] |
Note: Author grants permission for tradition-minded Catholics to freely use/modify original letter above (for personal use) in their own letters in support of the TLM. Faithful Catholics are encouraged to make our voices heard! We understand that Pope Leo XIV "has shown openness to engaging with the laity, including through letters and public dialogue", so please send him appropriate TLM-supporting letters. Thank you & God bless you!
