The faithful traditionally sign themselves [e.g. trace a little cross (+) with one's right thumb] three times for the reading of the Gospel as follows: "once on the forehead to show belief in the Gospel, once on the mouth to show respect for the Gospel in speech, and once over the heart to show our love for the Gospel."

Note: It is customary to SILENTLY recite an aspiration such as "May the Lord be always on my mind (+), always on my lips (+), and always in my heart (+)" while signing oneself.
