According to the
Catechism of the Council of Trent...
figures [of the Church,] the ark of Noah holds a conspicuous place. It was built
by the command of God, in order that there might be no doubt that it was a
symbol of the Church, which God has so constituted that all who enter therein
Baptism, may be safe from dangers, while such as are outside the Church,
like those who were not in the ark, are overwhelmed by their own crimes. Another
figure presents itself in the great city of Jerusalem, which, in Scripture,
often means Church. In Jerusalem only was it lawful to offer sacrifice to God,
and in the Church of God only are to be found the true worship and
true sacrifice which can at all be acceptable to God."
