Things I'd like to ask Sonia Sotomayor
By: Cathy S.
It's a shame regular folks like me can't ask
questions of Supreme Court nominees. I want to ask some questions of Sonia
Sotomayor like those below, although I'm sure other Americans would have
even better questions than I.
Here are some of the questions I want to
ask...
* Are you glad your mother didn't know about
her "constitutional right" to abort you?
* Are you glad your mother also didn't know
about her "constitutional right" to abort your brother?
* How are we to believe you lived for over
five decades without considering even once whether an unborn person should
have rights? If this is true, where were you in 1973 when Roe v. Wade was
decided? How did you spend so many years in legal training without thinking
of whether the unborn should have rights? If you are so narrow-minded not to
think of that, how could you be a good judge?
* How are we supposed to believe that your
"wise Latina" remark was a "rhetorical flourish that fell flat" considering
how you repeated it over and over? Did you expect that it would get better
over time?
* If your "wise Latina" remark was a
"rhetorical flourish that fell flat" does that mean you didn't actually mean
the words themselves? Do you generally not mean what you say?
* If a white male CEO came in your court on
charges of discrimination (or racism) would you believe him if he wrote off
his repeated remarks that he would hope "a wise white man with the richness
of his experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than
a Latina woman who hasn't lived that life" as a "rhetorical flourish that
fell flat"? Would you find him "not guilty" of discrimination (or racism)
even though he repeated these remarks over and over again to a laudatory
white audience? What if his record showed that he denied promotions to
Latinos who did better than white men because not enough white men did well
enough? Would that be fair?
* Wouldn't you hold me in contempt of court if
I answered questions as evasively as you do?
* Are you aware that you are answering
questions evasively? (Choose Yes or No only)
* Now that you've had time to think about it,
do you think unborn children have any rights at all?
* Do you believe an unborn child is a human
person? If not, what do you consider a fetus to be? And, at what point does
it change from that into a person?
* Can you define what an abortion is? Would
you admit that it ends a life?
* Why did it take almost 200 years to discover
that the constitution gives a "right" to abortion if this "right" was there
all along?
* Should all children alive today be glad
their mothers didn't exercise their "constitutional right" to abort?
* Are there any other situations (besides the
unborn) where you believe one person's "right to privacy" outranks another's
right to live?
* Given your high rate of reversals, why
should you sit on the Supreme Court? Doesn't this mean your peers think
poorly of your work?
* Given what your colleagues have said about
your temperament, do you think other Supreme Court justices will find it
difficult to work with you?
* When white people become a minority in my
state, should they be given preferences?
* Would you be willing to sign a binding
statement promising that you'd resign the Supreme Court if you "legislate
from the bench" or give preference to Latinos?
* What would you like to say to the person who
was more qualified than you that you displaced at college? Does it bother
you in the least that you received a preference at their expense? Would it
bother you to have to hear from them how it negatively affected their life?
Have you ever given this a moment's thought?
* Does it bother you that you certainly
wouldn't be here today if you were not a Latina woman?
* Do you think being an "affirmative action
baby" is a good thing?
* Does it bother you that you probably
wouldn't be here today if you were a "faithful daughter" of the Catholic
Church?
* Had you ever been blessed with pregnancy and
wanted to be a mother, would you believe you were carrying a living child at
any time before birth? Would you have expected your husband to treat the
fetus in your womb as a living unborn child?
* Imagine for a moment that it would be
possible for men to become pregnant (hold your laughter, please). Then
imagine that your "ex-husband" was "pregnant" with your child. Would you
honestly feel you had no rights over that child even though you were its
mother?
* Does a mother who finds her already living
child physically (or financially or emotionally) burdensome have the right
to kill it?
* Would you support a charge of murder or
manslaughter if someone struck a pregnant woman and caused her baby to die?
What if the mother was planning to have an abortion?
* How can an unborn child have rights or not
based on the mother's will alone?
* Have you ever attended a baby shower? What
was the pregnant woman carrying in her womb?
* Should a mother who aborts her child be
required to choose the abortion method that is the least painful for the
child? Should abortionists have to make sure the child is fully dead before
dismembering it in the womb?
* If a child survives an abortion, should it
be able to sue its mother for attempting to kill it? If not, why?
* Why doesn't everyone have the right to kill
people they find inconvenient or burdensome?
* Do you see God as a Divine Lawmaker?
* Do you think people have a moral right to do
something that offends God?
* How can it be "legal" for a mother to stop
someone's heartbeat in the name of privacy?
* If a fornicating woman had had relations
with dozens of men, including a Latino man, would you mind if she made her
decision to abort her unborn child because tests determined the baby was a
Latino?
* Does it bother you that Planned Parenthood
said in 1963 that abortion KILLS a child but now the organization won't
admit that abortion kills a living child?
* Will you admit that abortion kills a living
child?
* Have you ever listened to the heartbeat of
an unborn baby?
* Does an unborn child ever have the right not
to be killed?
* Please explain why those persons are wrong
who think that an unborn child should have the right to life (especially if
the child could survive outside the womb)
* Since you deny an entire class of citizens,
"the most helpless of all persons", a legal right to live why should we
place you in the highest legal court in the country?
Then, I would like to close my question
session by giving Sonia Sotomayor a "gift". And I would like my "gift" to be
left on the table in her line of vision after she removes the wrapping
paper. That "gift" would be a jar containing the remains of a helpless
aborted child, complete with fingers and toes.
