"Can. 1255 § 1 To the most Holy Trinity and to each of its Persons [and] to Christ the Lord, even under the sacramental species, there is owed the worship of latria; to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the cult of hyperdulia; and to the others reigning with Christ in heaven, the cult of dulia. § 2 Also to sacred relics and images there is a veneration and a cult owed to the respective persons to whom the images and relics refer." (1917 Code of Canon Law)

"Can. 1281 § 1 Important relics or precious images and likewise other relics or images that are honored in some church with a great veneration of the people cannot validly be alienated or perpetually transferred to another church without the permission of the apostolic See. § 2 The important relics of the Saints or Blesseds are..." (1917 Code of Canon Law)

"Can. 1283 § 1. Only those relics can be honored with public cult in churches, even exempt ones, that have been shown to be genuine with an authentic document of some Cardinal of the H.R.C. or the local Ordinary or another ecclesiastical man to whom has been granted the faculty of authenticating by apostolic indult. § 2 A Vicar General cannot, without a special mandate, issue an authentication of relics." (1917 Code of Canon Law)

"Can. 1284 Local Ordinaries shall prudently remove from public cult relics that they certainly know not to be authentic." (1917 Code of Canon Law)

"Can. 1285 § 1 Sacred relics whose documents of authenticity are lost because of civil disturbances or some other reason shall not be put out for public veneration, unless preceded by the judgement of the local Ordinary, but not of the Vicar General without a special mandate. § 2 Ancient relics, however, that have been up to the present in venation are retained, unless in a particular case it is shown by certain arguments that they are false or are pretenders." (1917 Code of Canon Law)

"Can. 1286 Local Ordinaries shall not allow, especially in sacred sermons, books, journals, or commentaries designed to foster piety, from mere conjecture, [or based] solely on probably arguments or prejudicial opinions, questions about the authenticity of sacred relics to be treated, especially in mocking terms or [ones] contemptuous of learning." (1917 Code of Canon Law)

"Can. 1287 § 1 Relics, when they are exposed, shall be closed in a reliquary or capsule and ought to be [signed as authentic]. § 2 Relics of the most holy Cross are never exhibited for public veneration in the same reliquary with the relics of the Saints, but shall have their own separate reliquary. § 3 The relics of the Blesseds, without a particular indult, are not carried in processions nor are they exposed in churches, except where there is a concession from the Apostolic See for the celebration of their office and Mass." (1917 Code of Canon Law)

"Can. 1289 § 1 It is nefarious to sell sacred relics; therefore local Ordinaries, vicars forane, pastors, and others having the care of souls shall take great care lest sacred relics, especially of the most holy cross, and especially on the occasion of inheritance or the bulk alienation of goods, are sold and thus pass into the hands of non-Catholics. § 2 Rectors of churches, and others who look to such things, shall be sedulously careful lest sacred relics in any way be profaned, or that they be lost by negligent people, or that they are less than decently preserved." (1917 Code of Canon Law)

"Can. 1190 §1 It is absolutely forbidden to sell sacred relics. §2 Relics of great significance and other relics honored with great reverence by the people cannot be alienated validly in any manner or transferred permanently without the permission of the Apostolic See. §3 The prescript of §2 is valid also for images which are honored in some church with great reverence by the people." (1983 Code of Canon Law)

"Those, therefore, who dare to think or to teach otherwise or to spurn according to wretched heretics the ecclesiastical traditions and to invent anything novel, or to reject anything from these things which have been consecrated by the Church: either the Gospel or the figure of the Cross, or the (representational) picture, or the sacred relics of the martyr; or to invent perversely and cunningly for the overthrow of any one of the legitimate traditions of the Catholic Church; or even, as it were, to use the sacred vessels or the venerable monasteries as common things; if indeed they are bishops or clerics, we order (them) to be deposed; monks, however, or laymen, to be excommunicated." (Second Council of Nicaea, 787 A.D.)

"If we have previously disapproved of the error of those who would wish to outlaw images from churches on the plea of reviving an ancient tradition, We now deem it Our duty to censure the inconsiderate zeal of those who propose for veneration in the Churches and on the altars, without any just reason, a multitude of sacred images and statues, and also those who display unauthorized relics, those who emphasize special and insignificant practices, neglecting essential and necessary things. They thus bring religion into derision and lessen the dignity of worship. Let us recall, as well, the decree about 'not introducing new forms of worship and devotion.' We commend the exact observance of this decree to your vigilance." (Pope Pius XII, "Mediator Dei", 1947)

"The divine apostle Paul said: The sins of some people are manifest, those of others appear later. Some sins take the front rank but others follow in their footsteps. Thus in the train of the impious heresy of the defamers of Christians, many other impieties appeared. Just as those heretics removed the sight of venerable icons from the church, they also abandoned other customs, which should now be renewed and which should be in vigour in virtue of both written and unwritten legislation. Therefore we decree that in venerable churches consecrated without relics of the holy martyrs, the installation of relics should take place along with the usual prayers. And if in future any bishop is found out consecrating a church without relics, let him be deposed as someone who has flouted the ecclesiastical traditions." (Canon 7, Second Council of Nicaea)
