Q.
Am I Required to Include My E-Mail Address In My Post?
A. Usually, you are not
required to provide your e-mail address when submitting a post in a
non-commercial section. Note that optional e-mail fields may offer you
the opportunity to either include your e-mail address or key in
"N/A" if you do not wish to include your e-mail address.
However, in some sections, you may be required to include your e-mail
address (e.g. when offering books for loan/exchange/transfer in the Book
Review & Exchange section, when offering or requesting items in the
Give & Take Section, when submitting an event for the Catholic
Events Section, when submitting or requesting volunteers in the
Volunteers' Corner Section, when requesting an ad in a Commercial Section).
Also, you may be required to provide your e-mail address when submitting
feedback. Remember that including your e-mail address involves various
risks. If you do not want your e-mail address to appear on the site, you
should not submit a post in a section where your e-mail address
is required [or use any other form where your e-mail address is required
(or otherwise provide your e-mail address)]. Reminder: We recommend a
cautious approach to providing personal information, including e-mail
addresses.
Q.
What Are Some Benefits of Including My E-Mail Address?
A. There are two
primary benefits of including your e-mail address. The first is so that
others may contact you privately. The second is that by including your
e-mail address you may more fully participate in all the sections of
this site (including the Book Exchange, Give & Take, and Volunteers'
Corner, and Commercial Sections).
Q.
What Are Some Risks of Including My E-Mail Address?
A. Providing your
e-mail address may entail a variety of risks. Remember that if you
provide your e-mail address, it may be accessible to a wide range of
people (including all those who have access to the Internet). As a
result, you may encounter undesirable occurrences. For example:
*
You may receive unwanted e-mail, viruses / worms, hate mail, etc.
*
You may be sent offensive images or text via e-mail.
*
You may be put on e-mail lists without your permission.
*
You may be contacted about your posts for a long time, even if they are
no longer applicable and even if they no longer appear on the site.
*
Persons may use your e-mail address in an attempt to sell you products
& services.
*
You may receive a large quantity of e-mail (wanted or unwanted) that
exceeds the maximums indicated by your e-mail provider.
*
Those with malicious intent may attempt to gain access to your e-mail
account (and they may or may not be successful). If they are successful,
they may have access to the private information you have supplied to
your e-mail provider.
*
Those with malicious intent may attempt to spy on your incoming /
outgoing e-mail (and they may or may not be successful).
*
You may experience problems that may force you to abandon / switch
e-mail accounts.
*
Opportunistic and/or unscrupulous individuals may take advantage of
information you provide and contact you. For example, if you post an
announcement regarding the passing of your spouse and include an e-mail
address, an unscrupulous individual may contact you and attempt to get
you to do something they want you to do knowing that you may be in a
vulnerable state.
Q.
What Else Should I Keep in Mind?
A.
With regard to the inclusion of e-mail addresses,
you should also keep in mind that:
*
We recommend a cautious approach to personal information for your own
protection.
*
Once submitted, your actions cannot be undone. Your e-mail address may
remain out there for a very, very long time... Sorry, but we are unable
to honor requests to remove your e-mail address from your previously
submitted posts.
*
The
more personal the post, the less you might want to include your e-mail
address. For example, if you are asking for prayers for a successful pregnancy, your
e-mail address may cause unwanted and bothersome communication
(including solicitation for baby items, offensive abortion images, etc.)
- remember that people do not
need your e-mail address to pray for you!
*
Although we strongly recommend that you obtain a special e-mail account
for use with this site, this may not fully protect you. Remember also that
some information about your computer is transferred even if you don't
put your e-mail address (e.g. browser type, IP address, etc.) and this information
may be assessable to others (especially those with malicious intent).
*
People may not honor your wishes regarding e-mail (for example, you may
indicate that your offer to loan a book is valid only to a specified
day, but others may contact you even much later than that date).
*
We have no control over what third party(ies) may do with your e-mail
address, and we are not responsible for their use of it, regardless of
circumstances. We do not guarantee that your information will be used
appropriately by any person(s).
*
Note that by using this site / using any forms on this site, you agree
that we are not required to secure any forms and that we are not
responsible if any problems occur, regardless of their cause /
circumstances. You also agree to assume all risks regarding forms /
e-mail / correspondence / etc. If you do not want - or cannot afford -
such risk, you should not participate. By submitting any data, you
understand and agree that we do not warrant the security of any data /
records / etc. and that you assume full and exclusive responsibility for
any consequences which may occur.
*
Remember that information sent via e-mail is generally insecure. E-mail
may be intercepted, forged, spied on/read by others, etc. Do not
transmit sensitive personal information via e-mail.
*
If you are unsure about including your e-mail address, you should omit
it (you may put "N/A" wherever this is allowed).
*
The fact that you are prompted for an e-mail address on an 'Add page'
does not necessarily mean that you must include an e-mail address. The field may require data, but
not necessary an e-mail address. Look for a notice that you may put
"N/A" in the e-mail field. Remember that an e-mail address is
required only in certain areas (e.g. when offering books for
loan/exchange/transfer in the Book Review & Exchange section, when
offering or requesting items in the Give & Take Section, when
submitting an event for the Catholic Events Section, when submitting or requesting
volunteers in the Volunteers' Corner Section, when requesting an ad in a
Commercial Section) - in other areas, you may put "N/A".
*
If you don't want to include your e-mail
address, you should not post where it is required.
*
You should think especially carefully about using areas of this site
where your e-mail address is required. Remember you assume all risks and
are solely responsible for all consequences due to your use of this
site.
*
Even if you have previously included your e-mail address with posts, you
may stop doing so at any time. Even if you still wish to continue
providing your e-mail address, you should feel free to omit it (when not
required) whenever you desire - e.g. for more sensitive posts, when you
are especially busy, etc.
*
Seniors / infirm / handicapped / frail persons / etc. should be especially
cautious about whether to include their e-mail addresses with posts.
*
The decision of whether or not to include your e-mail address is a personal
decision. It should be made extremely carefully, cautiously and with
much reflection. When doing so, remember that our Lord Jesus Christ said we
should expect to be hated by
the world (see Jn. 15:18-20).

Q.
What If I Am Unsure About Including My E-Mail Address?
A.
If you are unsure about including your e-mail address, you should omit
it (you may put "N/A" wherever this is allowed). You will be
unable to participate in areas where an e-mail address is required.
Q.
Who Will Be Able To See My E-Mail Address?
A.
If you provide your e-mail address, it may be accessible to a wide range
of people (including all those who have access to the Internet).
Q.
If I Do Include My E-Mail Address, What Do You Recommend?
A.
As indicated above, you should carefully consider whether or not to
include your e-mail address. If you have decided to include your e-mail
address, we strongly recommend that you use a
special e-mail account exclusively for use on this site (e.g. one that
you could easily abandon/change should a problem arise). For best
results, this e-mail account should be independent of your other e-mail
account(s). Note that various provider(s) may offer e-mail accounts at
little or no charge. You may also want to consider 'disposable' e-mail
accounts which may be valid only for a certain duration / number of
e-mails / etc. You should be sure to consider e-mail providers'
security / privacy policies when evaluating them. Further, we
recommend applying a filter to your e-mail so that you may avoid viewing offensive e-mail. You may consider reporting
any incidents which occur, as
applicable, to law enforcement authorities. You should also keep in mind
Our Lord's words: "Blessed are you when they insult you and
persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely) because
of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in
heaven." (See Mt. 5:11-12). And also, "I say to you, love your
enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children
of your heavenly Father" (See Mt. 5:44-45). And, of course, we recommend you
remain cautious about including any other personal information with your
posts and use appropriate virus protection / spyware detection / etc. and all
other appropriate security measures. Reminder: Advertisers may need
to have a 'permanent e-mail address' since it may be required for
various actions regarding ads (e.g. deletion requests, etc.).
