Introduction

Doctors of the Church: Alphabetically | By Year of Birth

Introduction

A "Doctor of the Church" (Lat. Doctores Ecclesiae) may be defined as: "An ecclesiastical writer, noted both for the greatness of his learning and the holiness of his life, whose feast has been extended to the whole Western Church with a Mass and Office either of his own or of the common of Doctors" (Catholic Dictionary)

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, "Certain ecclesiastical writers have received this title on account of the great advantage the whole Church has derived from their doctrine... The requisite conditions are enumerated as three: eminens doctrina, insignis vitae sanctitas, Ecclesiae declaratio (i.e. eminent learning, a high degree of sanctity, and proclamation by the Church). Benedict XIV explains the third as a declaration by the supreme pontiff or by a general council... The decree is issued by the Congregation of Sacred Rites and approved by the pope, after a careful examination, if necessary, of the saint's writings. It is not in any way an ex cathedra decision, nor does it even amount to a declaration that no error is to be found in the teaching of the Doctor. It is, indeed, well known that the very greatest of them are not wholly immune from error."

See below for a list of individuals that have been designated 'Doctors of the Church'.

Note: The decision of Pope Francis in February 2015 to declare this individual a 'Doctor of the Church' has caused controversy given that this 'Armenian poet and monk' reportedly: (1) lived outside communion with Rome (click here for the necessity of being in communion with the Pope for salvation), (2) may have held heretical views (click here for more on heresy), and (3) was not included in the Church's lists of saints prior to Vatican II. Note that this proclamation of a possible heretic/schismatic as a 'Doctor of the Church' - although regarded as scandalous by many Catholics - clearly does not fall under papal infallibility. Some consider this honor to be 'just one more misguided ecumenical gesture' (click here for more on ecumenism).

BIG Book of Latin Activities For Catholics

Beginning - Intermediate (Vol. 1)

"Suitable For Children Or Adults!" ~ "Perfect For Home Schoolers!"

+ + +

As many faithful Catholics already know, the majestic Latin language – the 'official language' of the Catholic Church – promotes unity, helps safeguard the purity of doctrine, connects us with our Catholic ancestors, allows us to pray in "one voice", and even ties back to the inscription on the Cross which was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. The Latin language is still used today in the precious treasure that is the Traditional Latin ('Tridentine') Mass, in 'everyday speech' (much of English is derived from Latin), in mottos, in specialized fields, and in educational endeavors. It has been shown that the study of Latin brings many benefits. "And, Latin is truly the language of heaven!"

If you enjoy Latin, you may be glad to know that this full-sized (8.5" x 11"), tradition-minded publication features an assortment of activity types related to Latin (including: word searches, crosswords, coloring activities, challenges, fill-ins, spelling bee, quizzes, unscrambles, true/false, multiple choice, matching, cross-offs, circling, word associations, translation exercises, and more...), and treats of various topics (including: common Latin words, Latin language facts, Latin grammar, nouns & verbs, abbreviations, phrases / sayings / mottos, prefixes, cardinal numbers, grammatical gender, inflection, word roots, diacritics / accenting, pronunciation, Latin prayers / hymns, Scripture verses, Catholic phrases, and more...).
