Status of the Latin 'Tridentine' Mass

Latin Mass / Catholic Tradition | Why the Latin Mass?

Traditional Latin ('Tridentine') Mass

Status of the Latin 'Tridentine' Mass

Important Notice: The following is provided for informational purposes only and is not comprehensive. We make no guarantees regarding any item herein. By using this site you agree to all terms. For more terms information, click here.

Those who think the Latin 'Tridentine' Mass is a thing of the past are entirely mistaken. Instead, the clamor for and ability to this ancient Mass have grown steadily over recent years. The desire for this Mass has been called a "rightful aspiration" deserving of respect by Pope John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI has also supported the desire for the Traditional Mass.

In fact, recent years have seen an increase in priestly Actual Headline: "The Latin Mass is Filling the Pews" orders dedicated to the traditional rites (for all the sacraments, not just the Mass) and even a whole diocese has received papal sanction to be an "entire traditional diocese". The number of Traditional Masses has increased over recent years and many dioceses have at least one 'Tridentine' Mass per week, while some have daily 'Tridentine' Masses. Additionally, the number of traditional Catholics has been swelling over recent years and even high ranking prelates have publicly said the Traditional Mass. Further, it has been said that the only vocations "crisis" facing traditional orders is how to handle all the applicants they receive!

That's not to say all has been easy - it is clear that traditional Catholics face widespread mistreatment by prelates and often suffer unwarranted charges of disobedience, disunity, etc., for simply wanting to worship the same way their fathers and grandfathers have worshiped. But, this mistreatment (and even abuse) has not stopped faithful Catholics. In fact, the 'Tridentine' Masses tend to fill up, even as the general Mass attendance remains low. It has been said that the 'Tridentine' Mass - the "Mass of the Saints" and "the most beautiful thing this side of heaven" - is also "the Mass that will not die". Deo Gratias!

Don't Be Fooled!

The 'Tridentine' Mass Has NOT Been Abrogated or Forbidden! Attending Licit 'Tridentine' Masses is in NO WAY Disobedient!

* The 'Tridentine' Mass is Not Abrogated or Forbidden:

In 1986, under Pope John Paul II, a commission of nine cardinals (including Cardinal Stickler and Cardinal Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI) voted unanimously that the 'Tridentine' Mass was never abrogated. According to Cardinal Stickler, "the answers given by the nine Cardinals in 1986 was 'No, the Mass of Saint Pius V (the 'Tridentine' Mass) has never been suppressed." The commission also determined that priests have the right to say the Traditional Mass (Cardinal Sticker said that "the nine Cardinals unanimously agreed that no bishop may forbid a Catholic priest from saying the Tridentine Mass"). Further, it has been widely reported that Pope Paul VI, the pope who imposed the Mass, told a priest that "Certainly, I never forbade celebration of the old Mass; I have only offered an alternative."

As Cardinal Ratzinger (the future Pope Benedict XVI) has said: "It is good to recall here what Cardinal Newman observed, that the Church, throughout her history, has never abolished or forbidden orthodox liturgical forms. [To do so] would be quite alien to the Spirit of the Church. An orthodox liturgy [is] one which expresses the true faith.... The authority of the Church has the power to define and limit the use of such rites in different historical situations, but she never just purely and simply forbids them! Thus the [Second Vatican] Council ordered a reform of the liturgical books, but it did not prohibit the use of the previous books." (emphasis added)

* The "1988 Indult" of Pope John Paul II Calls the Desire for the Traditional Mass a "Rightful Aspiration", Deserving of Respect:

"To all those Catholic faithful who feel attached to some previous liturgical and disciplinary forms of the Latin tradition I wish to manifest my will to facilitate their ecclesial communion by means of the necessary measures to guarantee respect for their rightful aspirations. In this matter I ask for the support of the bishops and of all those engaged in the pastoral ministry in the Church...moreover, respect must everywhere be shown for the feelings of all those who are attached to the Latin liturgical tradition, by a wide and generous application of the directives already issued some time ago by the Apostolic See for the use of the Roman Missal according to the typical edition of 1962." (Pope John Paul II, Ecclesia Dei, 1988 A.D., emphasis added)

* According to Pope Benedict XVI, the 'Tridentine' Mass Should Be Granted Much More Generously:

"I am of the opinion, to be sure, that the old rite should be granted much more generously to all those who desire it. It is impossible to see what could be dangerous or unacceptable about that. A community is calling its very being into question when it suddenly declares that what until now was its holiest and highest possession is strictly forbidden and when it makes the longing for it seem downright indecent." (Cardinal Ratzinger, future Pope Benedict XVI, emphasis added)

* Even the Second Vatican Council States That All Lawful Rites Should Be Fostered:

"Finally, in faithful obedience to tradition, the sacred Council declares that Holy Mother Church holds all lawfully recognized rites to be of equal right and dignity; that she wishes to preserve them in the future and to foster them in every way." (Second Vatican Council, Sacrosanctum Concilium, The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, December 4, 1963, emphasis added)

* And Finally, the "Perpetual Indult" of Pope St. Pius V:

"Let all everywhere adopt and observe what has been handed down by the Holy Roman Church, the Mother and Teacher of the other churches, and let Masses not be sung or read according to any other formula than that of this [Traditional, the so-called 'Tridentine'] Missal published by Us. This ordinance applies henceforth, now, and forever, throughout all the provinces of the Christian world... This Missal is to be used by all churches, even by those which in their authorization are made exempt, whether by Apostolic indult, custom, or privilege, or even if by oath or official confirmation of the Holy See, or have their rights and faculties guaranteed to them by any other manner whatsoever... whereas, by this present Constitution, which will be valid henceforth, now, and forever, We order and enjoin that nothing must be added to Our recently published Missal, nothing omitted from it, nor anything whatsoever be changed within it under the penalty of Our displeasure... Furthermore, by these presents [this law], in virtue of Our Apostolic authority, We grant and concede in perpetuity that, for the chanting or reading of the Mass in any church whatsoever, this Missal is hereafter to be followed absolutely, without any scruple of conscience or fear of incurring any penalty, judgment, or censure, and may freely and lawfully be used. Nor are superiors, administrators, canons, chaplains, and other secular priests, or religious, of whatever title designated, obliged to celebrate the Mass otherwise than as enjoined by Us. We likewise declare and ordain that no one whosoever is forced or coerced to alter this Missal, and that this present document cannot be revoked or modified, but remain always valid and retain its full force... Therefore, no one whosoever is permitted to alter this notice of Our permission, statute, ordinance, command, precept, grant, indult, declaration, will, decree, and prohibition. Should [anyone venture to do so, let him] know that he will incur the wrath of Almighty God and of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul." (Pope St. Pius V, Quo Primum, emphasis added)
