50 Tips for Raising a Joyful, Holy Catholic Family

Children Are God's Gift

By: John Seiler

Summary: Parenting tips gleaned from five Catholic families.

Raising children is a great joy for all Catholic families. To help, below are 50 tips for raising children, gleaned from five Catholic families I know.

Prayer

1. Pray the Rosary every day.

2. Alternate who leads the Rosary among the parents and children, starting at about six years of age. This fosters Catholic unity in the family before Our Lady.

3. Pray before every meal. [And after meals.]

4. Also useful: Have one child read briefly from the New Testament or the lives of the saints at the beginning of the meal, much as when one goes on a retreat.

5. The family should pray together as they go to bed at night.

Mass

1. Attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Day. Make sure the Mass is said properly and reverently by a holy priest.

2. Always be not only on time for Mass, but early.

3. Children 18 and older still living at home also must attend Mass with the family.

4. Prior to Mass, a brief reflection should be conducted, preferably at home. But in the car is OK provided one is not late for Mass. The Mass readings are good.

5. One priest recommends the father lead the family into the church and everyone should sit in the front pew, or the closest pew to the front that's available.

Marriage in General

1. The love and faith between husband and wife will show children the kind of marriage they will seek.

2. Make Jesus the center of your marriage.

3. Even in a large family with many children, father and mother must take time to be husband and wife together. That is, they need a little time for themselves.

4. The Holy Family – Jesus, Mary and Joseph – are the example for all families. Pray to them.

5. Great quote from St. Thomas Aquinas, the Catholic Church's main theologian: "Between husband and wife, it seems, there exists the greatest of friendship."

Key Scripture for Husbands and Wives [Ephesians 5:22-30 (Douay-Rheims Version)]:

"Let women be subject to their husbands, as to the Lord: Because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. He is the saviour of his body. Therefore as the church is subject to Christ, so also let the wives be to their husbands in all things. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ also loved the church, and delivered himself up for it: That he might sanctify it, cleansing it by the laver of water in the word of life: That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any; such thing; but that it should be holy, and without blemish. So also ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife, loveth himself. For no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, as also Christ doth the church: Because we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones."

Tips from Fathers for Fathers

1. You are the head of the family.

2. As father/husband, you are the provider and protector.

3. Your wife wants you to lead her. She is the heart of the family.

4. Make sure your children see you leading the family, including their mother.

5. Pray to St. Joseph and make him your special devotion. He will guide you.

Tips from Mothers for Mothers

1. You are the heart of the family.

2. As the heart of the family, you must respect your husband as the head of the family.

3. You want to obey your husband, and your children want you too. Children need his example of firm leadership that provides safety, which they see affirmed when you obey him.

4. You provide the tender love and nurturing care everyone in your family needs every day.

5. Pray to Our Lady and make her your special devotion. She will guide you.

Raising Children in General

1. Be gentle but firm raising children. They need that and want it.

2. Mother and father should provide a "united front" toward the children.

3. Take some time apart just for each child and you. Make it special to show your love.

4. "Even if you have 10 children, they all will be different," one mother said. God made each child to serve His purposes in a unique way, and mother and father to lead them to heaven.

5. Chores are essential for children, to teach them discipline and responsibility. Also, Mom and Dad need the rest.

Catholic Child-Raising Precepts

1. As mother and father, you have one goal for your children: Raising saints.

2. Just as children develop at different rates academically and emotionally, so do they spiritually.

3. Mother and Father should lead their children to confession with a good priest at least once a month.

4. Find a good priest who can counsel the whole family (apart from confession) about family matters. A priest really is a "father" to his parishioners and God gives him special spiritual and practical wisdom to impart.

5. Encourage your children to look into the vocations of priest and nun.

Catholic Education

1. Nowadays, homeschooling is best. Yet homeschooling should not be taken lightly. Although highly rewarding, its difficulty should not be discounted.

2. Today an incredible number of homeschooling resources are available, from great Catholic curriculums to activities with other families such as band and orchestra.

3. Recognize that homeschooling is a vocation God has given you. Like anything important, the reward will be worth the effort. The reward is raising good Catholic children.

4. Due to legal fights by many Catholic parents, homeschooling now is legal in every American state.* But make sure to follow a Catholic curriculum, not a government one.

5. Fill your house with holy books.

Play and Entertainment

1. Do not allow internet use. [Try here for related article, "Keep Cell Phones, TV, Internet and Other Screens Away From Children"]

2. TV just isn't needed. Get rid of it.

3. Develop family activities such as card games, appropriate sports and playing music.

4. For boys, fathers should teach such things as woodworking, electronics and fixing the house.

5. For girls, mothers should teach such things as cooking, sewing and crocheting.

Older Children

1. Legally, your children are "on their own" at 18. But they're really still your children and you should continue guiding them.

2. If your adult children still live with you, they still must obey all rules, or leave.

3. One father of older children said: "I have two rules: 1. Go to Mass with the family on Sundays and holy days. 2. Be inside the house by curfew. If they don't follow those, they are asked to leave."

4. You also should still guide your adult children in their dating choices, insisting on Catholic dates and, of course, spouses.

5. A special joy is becoming grandparents. As one grandfather told me, "It's all the fun, without most of the burdens."

BIG Book of Latin Activities For Catholics

"Suitable For Children Or Adults!" ~ "Perfect For Homeschoolers!"

+ + +

As many faithful Catholics already know, the majestic Latin language – the 'official language' of the Catholic Church – promotes unity, helps safeguard the purity of doctrine, connects us with our Catholic ancestors, allows us to pray in "one voice", and even ties back to the inscription on the Cross which was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. The Latin language is still used today in the precious treasure that is the Traditional Latin ('Tridentine') Mass, in 'everyday speech' (much of English is derived from Latin), in mottos, in specialized fields, and in educational endeavors. It has been shown that the study of Latin brings many benefits. "And, Latin is truly the language of heaven!"

If you enjoy Latin, you may be glad to know that this full-sized (8.5" x 11"), tradition-minded publication features an assortment of activity types related to Latin (including: word searches, crosswords, coloring activities, challenges, fill-ins, spelling bee, quizzes, unscrambles, true/false, multiple choice, matching, cross-offs, circling, word associations, translation exercises, and more...), and treats of various topics (including: common Latin words, Latin language facts, Latin grammar, nouns & verbs, abbreviations, phrases/sayings/mottos, prefixes, cardinal numbers, grammatical gender, inflection, word roots, diacritics/accenting, pronunciation, Latin prayers/hymns, Scripture verses, Catholic phrases, and more...).
