Description

Ides

"The eighth day after the nones; 15th of March, May, July and October, 13th of other months. Part of the Roman system of dating, still sometimes used in ecclesiastical documents." (Catholic Dictionary)

Images

Images include pictures, sculptures, paintings, etc. of Our Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Saints, Angels, etc. They may be found in churches, Catholic homes, Catholic businesses, etc. Catholics are called to venerate holy images. Images also direct thoughts to holy things, raise the mind to God, help us learn how to imitate the saints, remind us to ask for their intercession, increase our devotion, instruct us in the faith, etc. They also serve to 'witness' to our faith. They have a biblical basis. All Catholics should have some holy images in their home. Note: Click here for 'Sacred Art / Images' Reflections. Click here for 'Honoring & Intercession of the Saints' (Saints Section). Click here for 'Decoration of the Home' Reflections (Catholic Life Reflections)

The Immaculate Conception

Refers to the preservation of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the stain of Original Sin from the first moment of her conception. The Immaculate Conception is celebrated on December 8. Note: Click here for 'Immaculate Conception / Sinlessness' Reflections (Mary, Our Mother Section)

Imperfect Contrition

"Imperfect contrition is that by which we hate what offends God, because by it we lose heaven and deserve hell; or because sin is so hateful in itself." (Baltimore Catechism) Although imperfect contrition is sufficient for a valid sacramental Confession, we should strive to have perfect contrition. Note: For more on contrition, try here (Penance / Confession - Sacraments Section)

Imprimatur

"(Lat., let it be printed'). The word by which a bishop or his delegate licenses a book for publication" (Catholic Dictionary). An imprimatur does not guarantee accuracy of the contents, but simply permits the item to be published as no doctrinal or moral errors were found. The value of any given imprimatur may depend on the how it is issued (e.g. whether it was issued carefully after proper investigation or carelessly) and may, unfortunately, vary depending upon the issuer. Note: For more information, try the Catholic Book Review & Exchange Reflections (click here

'In Persona Christi'

Click here for ''In Persona Christi' information (Priests & Vocations Section / Facts)

The Incarnation

"The assumption of human nature [both body and soul] by the second Person of the Blessed Trinity, God the Son." (Catholic Dictionary) Note: Click here for 'Incarnation / Nativity' Reflections

Indefectibility

"[W]hen we say the Church is indefectible, we mean that it will last forever and be infallible forever; that it will always remain as Our Lord founded it and never change the doctrines He taught." (Baltimore Catechism) Note: Click here for 'The Unshakable Church' Reflections

Indissolubility

Refers to the unbreakable bond between sacramentally married couples - a bond which can be broken by no one on earth and ends only upon the death of either spouse. Note: For more information, click here (Matrimony / Sacraments). For 'Matrimony / Marriage' Reflections, click here. For 'Marriage / Family / Home' Reflections, click here

Indulgences

"An Indulgence is the remission in whole or in part of the temporal punishment due to sin." (Baltimore Catechism) Note: For more information on indulgences, click here. For 'Indulgences' Reflections, click here.

Indult

Refers to a special permission

Infallibility

Click here for information on papal infallibility.

Infidels

"Infidels [are those] who have never been baptized, and who, through want of faith, refuse to be baptized" (Baltimore Catechism)

Inquisition

"An ecclesiastical tribunal for the discovery, punishment and prevention of heresy, first instituted in southern France by Pope Gregory IX in 1229." (Catholic Dictionary)

Intercession (of Saints)

Jehovah

The term 'Jehovah' has been used to refer to God, however it has been shown to be a transliteration error (the proper name of God is Yahweh). Considering that one of the Ten Commandments is dedicated to God's name, one should steer clear from using an erroneous term as His name.

Jesus / Jesus Christ

"The Son of God made man for us; the Word, begotten of the Father from all eternity, who took flesh and was born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Ghost; who lived in Galilee and Judea, preached the Kingdom of God, did miracles and founded the Church: who suffered under Pontius Pilate, and died on the cross, a willing victim for the sins of the world; who was buried and, on the third day, rose from the dead, and forty days later ascended into Heaven where he now sits [at] the right hand of the Father; who also is really and corporally present in the Blessed Sacrament: and is the Way, the Truth and the Life of all Christians." (Catholic Dictionary). The name "Jesus" signifies savior and "Christ" means anointed. Note: For Reflections, click here

Judgment

Each person will be judged by Christ. First, at the particular judgment (upon one's death) and secondly, at the general judgment (at the end of the world). The general judgment will confirm the particular judgment and make it public. Note: Click here for 'Judgment' Reflections

Justification

"In its active sense, Justification is the act of God declaring and making a person just; in its passive sense, it is the change in a soul which passes from the state of sin to that of sanctifying grace or justice." (Catholic Dictionary) Note: Click here for 'Justification' Reflections
