The Farmer's Granddaughter
God's Natural World & The Farmer
Holly J. Harrington
Summary: Reflections of a farmer's granddaughter; Non-Catholic
calls the Pope 'great'
Keywords: Farming, Farmers, Farm Life, Grandparents, Natural
I am the granddaughter of a strawberry farmer. A
good one at that even though I'm prejudiced. He only got through to the
eighth grade but the man invented his one and only strain of berries.
Something that the genius' do in the laboratory today. Hothouse planting
I believe. I'm no expert, this is thoughts of a laywoman from her past. I
admired this man because he was a natural farmer even if he probably
didn't think this way.
I only knew him briefly but the memories came
later through my grandmother who outlasted him by 20+ years I believe.
She too was his partner in this farming scheme. She was also not very
educated but she was wise in a commonsense way as he was.
They had 4 children & a farm eventually after
working hard. They weathered the Great Depression better than most but
it was hard. The families moved in with each other because it was
necessary in those days.
My grandmother I admired [though] she was a
note below)... My favorite memory was when she gave me her bible
with all grandchildren's names in it. What surprised me the most about
her bible was that inside she had a picture of Holy Father the late
Great John Paul II. It said on this clipping, "This is a great man in
1978". Even before we knew this she knew naturally and maybe
prophetically (**see note below).
I love farm people. They have the most prophetic
lives. Simple lives. They [at times] know with wisdom what is right in
the world sometimes before [others] do...
Thanks Grandma and Grandpa for what you gave me.
LIFE in the most natural uncomplicated way on a farm.

applying "the Great" label to a Pope, consider the user submitted

Called Great" (click here).
Further, note that Protestant 'bibles' are not acceptable reading for
Catholics [they are traditionally considered

Also, note that "prophetic" references herein may be taken to
