When the angels went away from them to heaven, the shepherds
said to one another, "Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see
this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to
us." So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the
infant lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known
the message that had been told them about this child. All who
heard it were amazed by what had been told them by the shepherds.
And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. [LK
2:15-19]
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This
man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel,
and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by
the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen
the Messiah of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple;
and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the
custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and
blessed God, saying: "Now, Master, you may let your servant
go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen
your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a
light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your
people Israel." The child's father and mother were amazed at
what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary
his mother, "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and
rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted
and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many
hearts may be revealed."
[LK 2:25-35]
Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of
Passover, and when he was twelve years old, they went up according
to festival custom. After they had completed its days, as they
were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but
his parents did not know it. Thinking that he was in the caravan,
they journeyed for a day and looked for him among their relatives
and acquaintances, but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem
to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple,
sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking
them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his
understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were
astonished, and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you
done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with
great anxiety." And he said to them, "Why were you
looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's
house?" But they did not understand what he said to them. He
went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to
them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. [Taken from LK
2:41-51]
Now the people were filled with expectation, and all were
asking in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah. John
answered them all, saying, "I am baptizing you with water,
but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the
thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit
and fire. His winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing
floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will
burn with unquenchable fire." [LK 3:15-17]
One day as Jesus was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the
law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee
and Judea and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was with him
for healing. And some men brought on a stretcher a man who was
paralyzed; they were trying to bring him in and set (him) in his
presence. But not finding a way to bring him in because of the
crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher
through the tiles into the middle in front of Jesus. When he saw
their faith, he said, "As for you, your sins are
forgiven." Then the scribes and Pharisees began to ask
themselves, "Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who but God
alone can forgive sins?" Jesus knew their thoughts and said
to them in reply, "What are you thinking in your hearts?
Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say,
'Rise and walk'? But that you may know that the Son of Man has
authority on earth to forgive sins" - he said to the man who was
paralyzed, "I say to you, rise, pick up your stretcher, and
go home." He stood up immediately before them, picked up what
he had been lying on, and went home, glorifying God. Then
astonishment seized them all and they glorified God, and, struck
with awe, they said, "We have seen incredible things
today." [LK 5:17-26]
"A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten
tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit.
For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather
grapes from brambles. A good person out of the store of goodness
in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of
evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth
speaks." [LK 6:43-45]
[Jesus said,] "This is the meaning of the parable. The
seed is the word of God. Those on the path are the ones who have
heard, but the devil comes and takes away the word from their
hearts that they may not believe and be saved. Those on rocky
ground are the ones who, when they hear, receive the word with
joy, but they have no root; they believe only for a time and fall
away in time of trial. As for the seed that fell among thorns,
they are the ones who have heard, but as they go along, they are
choked by the anxieties and riches and pleasures of life, and they
fail to produce mature fruit. But as for the seed that fell on
rich soil, they are the ones who, when they have heard the word,
embrace it with a generous and good heart, and bear fruit through
perseverance." [Taken from LK 8:11-15]
An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was
the greatest. Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and
took a child and placed it by his side and said to them,
"Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and
whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who
is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest." [LK
9:46-48]
There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and
said, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
Jesus said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you
read it?" He said in reply, "You shall love the Lord,
your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your
strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as
yourself." He replied to him, "You have answered
correctly; do this and you will live." [LK 10:25-28]
As for you, do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to
drink, and do not worry anymore. All the nations of the world seek
for these things, and your Father knows that you need them.
Instead, seek his kingdom, and these other things will be given
you besides. Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your
Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your belongings
and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear
out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach
nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is, there also will your
heart be. [Taken from LK 12:29-34]
The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all these things and
sneered at him. And [Jesus] said to them, "You justify
yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts; for
what is of human esteem is an abomination in the sight of God." [Taken from LK
16:14-15]
"Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from
carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and
that day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day will
assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth. Be vigilant
at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the
tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of
Man." [LK 21:34-36]
And [Jesus] said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are! How
slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not
necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter
into his glory?" Then beginning with Moses and all the
prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the
scriptures. As they approached the village to which they were
going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But
they urged him, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and
the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them. And
it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread,
said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their
eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from
their sight. Then they said to each other, "Were not our
hearts burning (within us) while he spoke to us on the way and
opened the scriptures to us?" So they set out at once and
returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the
eleven and those with them who were saying, "The Lord has
truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!" Then the two
recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made
known to them in the breaking of the bread. While they were still
speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them,
"Peace be with you." But they were startled and
terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said
to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in
your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself.
Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as
you can see I have." And as he said this, he showed them his
hands and his feet. [Taken from LK 24:25-40]
Jesus said to them, "The light will be among you only a
little while. Walk while you have the light, so that darkness may
not overcome you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where he
is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, so that
you may become children of the light." After he had said
this, Jesus left and hid from them. Although he had performed so
many signs in their presence they did not believe in him, in order
that the word which Isaiah the prophet spoke might be
fulfilled: "Lord, who has believed our
preaching, to whom has the might of the Lord been
revealed?" For this reason they could not believe, because
again Isaiah said: "He blinded their eyes and hardened
their heart, so that they might not see with their
eyes and understand with their heart and be
converted, and I would heal them." Isaiah said this
because he saw his glory and spoke about him. Nevertheless, many,
even among the authorities, believed in him, but because of the
Pharisees they did not acknowledge it openly in order not to be
expelled from the synagogue. For they preferred human praise to
the glory of God. [JN 12:35-43]
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in
God; have faith also in me. In my Father's house there are many
dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I
am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a
place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so
that where I am you also may be. Where (I) am going you know the
way." [JN 14:1-4]
Jesus answered and said to him, "Whoever loves me will
keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him
and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not
keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the
Father who sent me. I have told you this while I am with
you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my
name - he will teach you everything and remind you of all that (I)
told you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as
the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be
troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, 'I am going away and I
will come back to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I
am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. And now
I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens
you may believe. I will no longer speak much with you, for the
ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me, but the
world must know that I love the Father and that I do just as the
Father has commanded me. Get up, let us go." [Taken from JN 14:23-31]
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them,
"Are you discussing with one another what I said, 'A little
while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you
will see me'? Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn,
while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will
become joy. When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because
her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she
no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has
been born into the world. So you also are now in anguish. But I
will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will
take your joy away from you. On that day you will not question me
about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the
Father in my name he will give you. Until now you have not asked
anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy
may be complete." [Taken from JN 16:19-24]
Then they prayed, "You, Lord, who know the hearts of all,
show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in
this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his
own place." Then they gave lots to them, and the lot fell
upon Matthias, and he was counted with the eleven apostles. [Taken from ACTS
1:24-26]
You who are Israelites, hear these words. Jesus the Nazorean
was a man commended to you by God with mighty deeds, wonders, and
signs, which God worked through him in your midst, as you
yourselves know. This man, delivered up by the set plan and
foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to crucify
him. But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of
death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it. For
David says of him: 'I saw the Lord ever before me, with him at my
right hand I shall not be disturbed. Therefore my heart has been
glad and my tongue has exulted; my flesh, too, will dwell in hope,
because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld, nor will
you suffer your holy one to see corruption. You have made known to
me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'
[Taken from ACTS 2:22-28]
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they
asked Peter and the other apostles, "What are we to do, my
brothers?" Peter (said) to them, "Repent and be
baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all
those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call." He
testified with many other arguments, and was exhorting them,
"Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." Those
who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand
persons were added that day. [Taken from ACTS 2:37-41]
All who believed were together and had all things in common;
they would sell their property and possessions and divide them
among all according to each one's need. Every day they devoted
themselves to meeting together in the temple area and to breaking
bread in their homes. They ate their meals with exultation and
sincerity of heart, praising God and enjoying favor with all the
people. And every day the Lord added to their number those who
were being saved. [ACTS 2:44-47]
The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no
one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had
everything in common. With great power the apostles bore witness
to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was
accorded them all. There was no needy person among them, for those
who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds
of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they
were distributed to each according to need. [ACTS 4:32-35]
A man named Ananias, however, with his wife Sapphira, sold a
piece of property. He retained for himself, with his wife's
knowledge, some of the purchase price, took the remainder, and put
it at the feet of the apostles. But Peter said, "Ananias, why
has Satan filled your heart so that you lied to the Holy Spirit
and retained part of the price of the land? While it remained
unsold, did it not remain yours? And when it was sold, was it not
still under your control? Why did you contrive this deed? You have
lied not to human beings, but to God." When Ananias heard
these words, he fell down and breathed his last, and great fear
came upon all who heard of it. [ACTS 5:1-5]
"You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears,
you always oppose the Holy Spirit; you are just like your
ancestors. Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute?
They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous
one, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become. You
received the law as transmitted by angels, but you did not observe
it." When they heard this, they were infuriated, and they
ground their teeth at him. But he, filled with the Holy Spirit,
looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus
standing at the right hand of God, and he said, "Behold, I
see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right
hand of God." But they cried out in a loud voice, covered
their ears, and rushed upon him together. They threw him out of
the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid down their
cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. As they were stoning
Stephen, he called out, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice,
"Lord, do not hold this sin against them"; and when he
said this, he fell asleep. [Taken from ACTS 7:51-60]
When Simon saw that the Spirit was conferred by the laying on
of the apostles' hands, he offered them money and said, "Give
me this power too, so that anyone upon whom I lay my hands may
receive the Holy Spirit." But Peter said to him, "May
your money perish with you, because you thought that you could buy
the gift of God with money. You have no share or lot in this
matter, for your heart is not upright before God. Repent of this
wickedness of yours and pray to the Lord that, if possible, your
intention may be forgiven. For I see that you are filled with
bitter gall and are in the bonds of iniquity." Simon said in
reply, "Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you
have said may come upon me." [ACTS 8:18-24]
Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that arose
because of Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch,
preaching the word to no one but Jews. There were some Cypriots
and Cyrenians among them, however, who came to Antioch and began
to speak to the Greeks as well, proclaiming the Lord Jesus. The
hand of the Lord was with them and a great number who believed
turned to the Lord. The news about them reached the ears of the
church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas (to go) to Antioch.
When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and
encouraged them all to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of
heart, for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and
faith. And a large number of people was added to the Lord. [ACTS
11:19-24]
Then they asked for a king. God gave them Saul, son of Kish, a
man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. Then he removed
him and raised up David as their king; of him he testified, 'I
have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will
carry out my every wish.' From this man's descendants God,
according to his promise, has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus. [Taken
from ACTS 13:21-23]
The apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their garments when they
heard this and rushed out into the crowd, shouting, "Men, why
are you doing this? We are of the same nature as you, human
beings. We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from
these idols to the living God, 'who made heaven and earth and sea
and all that is in them.' In past generations he allowed all
Gentiles to go their own ways; yet, in bestowing his goodness, he
did not leave himself without witness, for he gave you rains from
heaven and fruitful seasons, and filled you with nourishment and
gladness for your hearts." [Taken from ACTS 14:14-17]
The apostles and the presbyters met together to see about this
matter. After much debate had taken place, Peter got up and said
to them, "My brothers, you are well aware that from early
days God made his choice among you that through my mouth the
Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe. And God,
who knows the heart, bore witness by granting them the Holy Spirit
just as he did us. He made no distinction between us and them, for
by faith he purified their hearts. Why, then, are you now putting
God to the test by placing on the shoulders of the disciples a
yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear? On
the contrary, we believe that we are saved through the grace of
the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they." The whole assembly
fell silent, and they listened while Paul and Barnabas described
the signs and wonders God had worked among the Gentiles through
them. [Taken from ACTS 15:6-12]
On the sabbath we went outside the city gate along the river
where we thought there would be a place of prayer. We sat and
spoke with the women who had gathered there. One of them, a woman
named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, from the city of Thyatira,
a worshiper of God, listened, and the Lord opened her heart to pay
attention to what Paul was saying. After she and her household had
been baptized, she offered us an invitation, "If you consider
me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my home," and she
prevailed on us. [ACTS 16:13-15]
We had been there several days when a prophet named Agabus came
down from Judea. He came up to us, took Paul's belt, bound his own
feet and hands with it, and said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit:
This is the way the Jews will bind the owner of this belt in
Jerusalem, and they will hand him over to the Gentiles." When
we heard this, we and the local residents begged him not to go up
to Jerusalem. Then Paul replied, "What are you doing, weeping
and breaking my heart? I am prepared not only to be bound but even
to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus." Since he
would not be dissuaded we let the matter rest, saying, "The
Lord's will be done." [Taken from ACTS 21:10-14]
So they arranged a day with him and came to his lodgings in
great numbers. From early morning until evening, he expounded his
position to them, bearing witness to the kingdom of God and trying
to convince them about Jesus from the law of Moses and the
prophets. Some were convinced by what he had said, while others
did not believe. Without reaching any agreement among themselves
they began to leave; then Paul made one final statement.
"Well did the Holy Spirit speak to your ancestors through the
prophet Isaiah, saying: 'Go to this people and say: You shall
indeed hear but not understand. You shall indeed look but never
see. Gross is the heart of this people; they will not hear with
their ears; they have closed their eyes, so they may not see with
their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their
heart and be converted, and I heal them.' Let it be known to you
that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they
will listen." [ACTS 28:23-28]
The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven against
every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the truth by
their wickedness. For what can be known about God is evident to
them, because God made it evident to them. Ever since the creation
of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and
divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he
has made. As a result, they have no excuse; for although they knew
God they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks.
Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless
minds were darkened. While claiming to be wise, they became fools
and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for the likeness of an
image of mortal man or of birds or of four-legged animals or of
snakes. Therefore, God handed them over to impurity through the
lusts of their hearts for the mutual degradation of their bodies.
They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and
worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed
forever. Amen. [Taken from ROM 1:18-25]
Therefore, you are without excuse, every one of you who passes
judgment. For by the standard by which you judge another you
condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the very same things.
We know that the judgment of God on those who do such things is
true. Do you suppose, then, you who judge those who engage in such
things and yet do them yourself, that you will escape the judgment
of God? Or do you hold his priceless kindness, forbearance, and
patience in low esteem, unaware that the kindness of God would
lead you to repentance? By your stubbornness and impenitent heart,
you are storing up wrath for yourself for the day of wrath and
revelation of the just judgment of God, who will repay everyone
according to his works: eternal life to those who seek glory,
honor, and immortality through perseverance in good works, but
wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth and obey
wickedness. Yes, affliction and distress will come upon every
human being who does evil, Jew first and then Greek. But there
will be glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good, Jew
first and then Greek. There is no partiality with God. [ROM 2:1-11]
All who sin outside the law will also perish without reference
to it, and all who sin under the law will be judged in accordance
with it. For it is not those who hear the law who are just in the
sight of God; rather, those who observe the law will be justified.
For when the Gentiles who do not have the law by nature observe
the prescriptions of the law, they are a law for themselves even
though they do not have the law. They show that the demands of the
law are written in their hearts, while their conscience also bears
witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even defend them
on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge people's
hidden works through Christ Jesus. [ROM 2:12-16]
One is not a Jew outwardly. True circumcision is not outward, in the flesh. Rather, one is a Jew inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart, in the spirit, not the letter; his praise is not from human beings but from God.
[ROM 2:28-29]
Not only that, but we even boast of our afflictions, knowing
that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven
character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not
disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our
hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For
Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the appointed
time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die
for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even
find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while
we were still sinners Christ died for us. [Taken from ROM 5:3-8]
Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as (being) dead
to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, sin must not
reign over your mortal bodies so that you obey their desires. And
do not present the parts of your bodies to sin as weapons for
wickedness, but present yourselves to God as raised from the dead
to life and the parts of your bodies to God as weapons for
righteousness. For sin is not to have any power over you, since
you are not under the law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin
because we are not under the law but under grace? Of course not!
Do you not know that if you present yourselves to someone as
obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of
sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to
righteousness? But thanks be to God that, although you were once
slaves of sin, you have become obedient from the heart to the
pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted. Freed from sin,
you have become slaves of righteousness. [Taken from ROM 6:11-18]
I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as
nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. For
creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the
children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of
its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope
that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption
and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know
that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and
not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the
Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption,
the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope
that sees for itself is not hope. For who hopes for what one sees?
But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with endurance. In
the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for
we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself
intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches
hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it
intercedes for the holy ones according to God's will. [ROM 8:18-27]
I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins
with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great
sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I
myself were accursed and separated from Christ for the sake of my
brothers, my kin according to the flesh. They are Israelites;
theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the
law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and
from them, according to the flesh, is the Messiah. God who is over
all be blessed forever. Amen. But it is not that the word of God
has failed. For not all who are of Israel are Israel, nor are they
all children of Abraham because they are his descendants; but
"It is through Isaac that descendants shall bear your
name." This means that it is not the children of the flesh
who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are
counted as descendants. [Taken from ROM 9:1-8]
Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God on their behalf
is for salvation. I testify with regard to them that they have
zeal for God, but it is not discerning. For, in their unawareness
of the righteousness that comes from God and their attempt to
establish their own (righteousness), they did not submit to the
righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for the
justification of everyone who has faith. Moses writes about the
righteousness that comes from (the) law, "The one who does
these things will live by them." But the righteousness that
comes from faith says, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will
go up into heaven?' (that is, to bring Christ down) or 'Who will
go down into the abyss?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the
dead)." But what does it say? "The word is near you, in
your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith
that we preach), for, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is
Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is
justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. For
the scripture says, "No one who believes in him will be put
to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek;
the same Lord is Lord of all, enriching all who call upon him. For
"everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be
saved." But how can they call on him in whom they have not
believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not
heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how
can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written,
"How beautiful are the feet of those who bring (the) good
news!" But not everyone has heeded the good news; for Isaiah
says, "Lord, who has believed what was heard from us?"
Thus faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes
through the word of Christ. [ROM 10:1-17]
I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who create dissensions and obstacles, in opposition to the teaching that you learned; avoid them. For such people do not serve our Lord Christ but their own appetites, and by fair and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the innocent.
[ROM 16:17-18]
When I came to you, brothers, proclaiming the mystery of God, I
did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom. For I resolved
to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him
crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling,
and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive (words
of) wisdom, but with a demonstration of spirit and power, so that
your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.
Yet we do speak a wisdom to those who are mature, but not a wisdom
of this age, nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away.
Rather, we speak God's wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God
predetermined before the ages for our glory, and which none of the
rulers of this age knew; for if they had known it, they would not
have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written: "What
eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered
the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love
him," this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the
Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God. [1COR 2:1-10]
Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards
of the mysteries of God. Now it is of course required of stewards
that they be found trustworthy. It does not concern me in the
least that I be judged by you or any human tribunal; I do not even
pass judgment on myself; I am not conscious of anything against
me, but I do not thereby stand acquitted; the one who judges me is
the Lord. Therefore, do not make any judgment before the appointed
time, until the Lord comes, for he will bring to light what is
hidden in darkness and will manifest the motives of our hearts,
and then everyone will receive praise from God. [1COR 4:1-5]
Brothers, stop being childish in your thinking. In respect to
evil be like infants, but in your thinking be mature. It is
written in the law: "By people speaking strange tongues and
by the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, and even so
they will not listen to me, says the Lord." Thus, tongues are
a sign not for those who believe but for unbelievers, whereas
prophecy is not for unbelievers but for those who believe. So if
the whole church meets in one place and everyone speaks in
tongues, and then uninstructed people or unbelievers should come
in, will they not say that you are out of your minds? But if
everyone is prophesying, and an unbeliever or uninstructed person
should come in, he will be convinced by everyone and judged by
everyone, and the secrets of his heart will be disclosed, and so
he will fall down and worship God, declaring, "God is really
in your midst." [1COR 14:20-25]
So when I intended this, did I act lightly? Or do I make my
plans according to human considerations, so that with me it is
"yes, yes" and "no, no"? As God is faithful,
our word to you is not "yes" and "no." For the
Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed to you by us,
Silvanus and Timothy and me, was not "yes" and
"no," but "yes" has been in him. For however
many are the promises of God, their Yes is in him; therefore, the
Amen from us also goes through him to God for glory. But the one
who gives us security with you in Christ and who anointed us is
God; he has also put his seal upon us and given the Spirit in our
hearts as a first installment. [Taken from 2COR 1:17-22]
For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not that you might be pained but that you might know the abundant love I have for you. [2COR 2:4]
Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as
some do, letters of recommendation to you or from you? You are our
letter, written on our hearts, known and read by all, shown to be
a letter of Christ administered by us, written not in ink but by
the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on
tablets that are hearts of flesh. Such confidence we have through
Christ toward God. Not that of ourselves we are qualified to take
credit for anything as coming from us; rather, our qualification
comes from God, who has indeed qualified us as ministers of a new
covenant, not of letter but of spirit; for the letter brings
death, but the Spirit gives life. Now if the ministry of death,
carved in letters on stone, was so glorious that the Israelites
could not look intently at the face of Moses because of its glory
that was going to fade, how much more will the ministry of the
Spirit be glorious? For if the ministry of condemnation was
glorious, the ministry of righteousness will abound much more in
glory. Indeed, what was endowed with glory has come to have no
glory in this respect because of the glory that surpasses it. For
if what was going to fade was glorious, how much more will what
endures be glorious. Therefore, since we have such hope, we act
very boldly and not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so
that the Israelites could not look intently at the cessation of
what was fading. Rather, their thoughts were rendered dull, for to
this present day the same veil remains unlifted when they read the
old covenant, because through Christ it is taken away. To this
day, in fact, whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their
hearts, but whenever a person turns to the Lord the veil is
removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the
Lord is, there is freedom. All of us, gazing with unveiled face on
the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image
from glory to glory, as from the Lord who is the Spirit. [Taken
from 2COR 3:1-18]
And even though our gospel is veiled, it is veiled for those
who are perishing, in whose case the god of this age has blinded
the minds of the unbelievers, so that they may not see the light
of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For
we do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves
as your slaves for the sake of Jesus. For God who said, "Let
light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to
bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of
(Jesus) Christ. But we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that
the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. [Taken from
2COR 4:3-7]
Therefore, since we know the fear of the Lord, we try to
persuade others; but we are clearly apparent to God, and I hope we
are also apparent to your consciousness. We are not commending
ourselves to you again but giving you an opportunity to boast of
us, so that you may have something to say to those who boast of
external appearance rather than of the heart. For if we are out of
our minds, it is for God; if we are rational, it is for you. For
the love of Christ impels us, once we have come to the conviction
that one died for all; therefore, all have died. He indeed died
for all, so that those who live might no longer live for
themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
Consequently, from now on we regard no one according to the flesh;
even if we once knew Christ according to the flesh, yet now we
know him so no longer. So whoever is in Christ is a new creation:
the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. [Taken
from 2COR 5:11-17]
We have spoken frankly to you, Corinthians; our heart is open wide.
You are not constrained by us; you are constrained by your own affections. As recompense in kind (I speak as to my children), be open yourselves. [2COR
6:11-13]
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves
from every defilement of flesh and spirit, making holiness perfect
in the fear of God. Make room for us; we have not wronged anyone,
or ruined anyone, or taken advantage of anyone. I do not say this
in condemnation, for I have already said that you are in our
hearts, that we may die together and live together. I have great
confidence in you, I have great pride in you; I am filled with
encouragement, I am overflowing with joy all the more because of
all our affliction. [2COR 7:1-4]
For this reason we are encouraged. And besides our
encouragement, we rejoice even more because of the joy of Titus,
since his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. For if I have boasted to him about you, I was not put to shame. No, just as
everything we said to you was true, so our boasting before Titus
proved to be the truth. And his heart goes out to you all the
more, as he remembers the obedience of all of you, when you
received him with fear and trembling. I rejoice, because I have
confidence in you in every respect. [Taken from 2COR 7:13-16]
But thanks be to God who put the same concern for you into the
heart of Titus, for he not only welcomed our appeal but, since he
is very concerned, he has gone to you of his own accord. With him
we have sent the brother who is praised in all the churches for
his preaching of the gospel. And not only that, but he has also
been appointed our traveling companion by the churches in this
gracious work administered by us for the glory of the Lord
(himself) and for the expression of our eagerness. [Taken from
2COR 8:16-19]
I mean that as long as the heir is not of age, he is no
different from a slave, although he is the owner of everything,
but he is under the supervision of guardians and administrators
until the date set by his father. In the same way we also, when we
were not of age, were enslaved to the elemental powers of the
world. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son,
born of a woman, born under the law, to ransom those under the
law, so that we might receive adoption. As proof that you are
children, God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying
out, "Abba, Father!" So you are no longer a slave but a
child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. [GAL 4:1-7]
Therefore, I, too, hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and
of your love for all the holy ones, do not cease giving thanks for
you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and
revelation resulting in knowledge of him. May the eyes of (your)
hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that
belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his
inheritance among the holy ones, and what is the surpassing
greatness of his power for us who believe, in accord with the
exercise of his great might, which he worked in Christ, raising
him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the
heavens, far above every principality, authority, power, and
dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but
also in the one to come. And he put all things beneath his feet
and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his
body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way. [EPH
1:15-23]
To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this grace was
given, to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable riches of Christ,
and to bring to light (for all) what is the plan of the mystery
hidden from ages past in God who created all things, so that the
manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church
to the principalities and authorities in the heavens. This was
according to the eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ
Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness of speech and confidence
of access through faith in him. So I ask you not to lose heart
over my afflictions for you; this is your glory. For this reason I
kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on
earth is named, that he may grant you in accord with the riches of
his glory to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the
inner self, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through
faith; that you, rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to
comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length
and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that
surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the
fullness of God. Now to him who is able to accomplish far more
than all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us, to him
be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations,
forever and ever. Amen. [EPH 3:8-21]
So I declare and testify in the Lord that you must no longer
live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds; darkened
in understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their
ignorance, because of their hardness of heart, they have become
callous and have handed themselves over to licentiousness for the
practice of every kind of impurity to excess. That is not how you
learned Christ, assuming that you have heard of him and were
taught in him, as truth is in Jesus, that you should put away the
old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful
desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on
the new self, created in God's way in righteousness and holiness
of truth. [EPH 4:17-24]
Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but
as wise, making the most of the opportunity, because the days are
evil. Therefore, do not continue in ignorance, but try to
understand what is the will of the Lord. And do not get drunk on
wine, in which lies debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
addressing one another (in) psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks
always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to
God the Father. [EPH 5:15-20]
Slaves, be obedient to your human masters with fear and
trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ, not only when
being watched, as currying favor, but as slaves of Christ, doing
the will of God from the heart, willingly serving the Lord and not
human beings, knowing that each will be requited from the Lord for
whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. Masters, act
in the same way toward them, and stop bullying, knowing that both
they and you have a Master in heaven and that with him there is no
partiality. [EPH 6:5-9]
So that you also may have news of me and of what I am doing, Tychicus, my beloved brother and trustworthy minister in the Lord, will tell you everything. I am sending him to you for this very purpose,
so that you may know about us and that he may encourage your hearts.
[EPH 6:21-22]
I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying
always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your
partnership for the gospel from the first day until now. I am
confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will
continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. It is right
that I should think this way about all of you, because I hold you
in my heart, you who are all partners with me in grace, both in my
imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.
For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the
affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love
may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of
perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure
and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of
righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and
praise of God. [PHIL 1:3-11]
If there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love,
any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy,
complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love,
united in heart, thinking one thing. Do nothing out of selfishness
or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more
important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own
interests, but (also) everyone for those of others. Have among
yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus [Taken
from PHIL 2:1-5]
Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your
kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety
at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of
God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and
minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true,
whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any
excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about
these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and
heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you. [PHIL
4:4-9]
For I want you to know how great a struggle I am having for you
and for those in Laodicea and all who have not seen me face to
face, that their hearts may be encouraged as they are brought
together in love, to have all the richness of fully assured
understanding, for the knowledge of the mystery of God, Christ, in
whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. [COL 2:1-3]
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing
with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance
against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also
do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of
perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the
peace into which you were also called in one body. And be
thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all
wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns,
and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And
whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of
the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. [COL
3:12-17]
Wives, be subordinate to your husbands, as is proper in the
Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and avoid any bitterness toward
them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is
pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, so
they may not become discouraged. Slaves, obey your human masters
in everything, not only when being watched, as currying favor, but
in simplicity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, do from
the heart, as for the Lord and not for others, knowing that you
will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance; be
slaves of the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will receive
recompense for the wrong he committed, and there is no partiality.
[COL 3:18-25]
Tychicus, my beloved brother, trustworthy minister, and fellow
slave in the Lord, will tell you all the news of me. I am sending
him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us
and that he may encourage your hearts, together with Onesimus, a
trustworthy and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell
you about everything here [COL 4:7-9]
For you yourselves know, brothers, that our reception among you
was not without effect. Rather, after we had suffered and been
insolently treated, as you know, in Philippi, we drew courage
through our God to speak to you the gospel of God with much
struggle. Our exhortation was not from delusion or impure motives,
nor did it work through deception. But as we were judged worthy by
God to be entrusted with the gospel, that is how we speak, not as
trying to please human beings, but rather God, who judges our
hearts. [1THES 2:1-4]
Brothers, when we were bereft of you for a short time, in person, not in heart, we were all the more eager in our great desire to see you in person. We decided to go to
you - I, Paul, not only once but more than once - yet Satan thwarted us.
For what is our hope or joy or crown to boast of in the presence of our Lord Jesus at his coming if not you yourselves?
For you are our glory and joy. [1THES 2:17-20]
Night and day we pray beyond measure to see you in person and
to remedy the deficiencies of your faith. Now may God himself, our
Father, and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you, and may the Lord
make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all,
just as we have for you, so as to strengthen your hearts, to be
blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of
our Lord Jesus with all his holy ones. (Amen.) [1THES 3:10-13]
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word. [2THES
2:16-17]
May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the endurance of Christ. [2THES 3:5]
I repeat the request I made of you when I was on my way to
Macedonia, that you stay in Ephesus to instruct certain people not
to teach false doctrines or to concern themselves with myths and
endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the
plan of God that is to be received by faith. The aim of this
instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a
sincere faith. Some people have deviated from these and turned to
meaningless talk, wanting to be teachers of the law, but without
understanding either what they are saying or what they assert with
such assurance. [1TM 1:3-7]
May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus because
he often gave me new heart and was not ashamed of my chains. But
when he came to Rome, he promptly searched for me and found me.
May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day.
And you know very well the services he rendered in Ephesus. [2TM
1:16-18]
So turn from youthful desires and pursue righteousness, faith,
love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord with
purity of heart. [2TM 2:22]
For I have experienced much joy and encouragement from your
love, because the hearts of the holy ones have been refreshed by
you, brother. Therefore, although I have the full right in Christ
to order you to do what is proper, I rather urge you out of love,
being as I am, Paul, an old man, and now also a prisoner for
Christ Jesus. I urge you on behalf of my child Onesimus, whose
father I have become in my imprisonment, who was once useless to
you but is now useful to (both) you and me. I am sending him, that
is, my own heart, back to you. I should have liked to retain him
for myself, so that he might serve me on your behalf in my
imprisonment for the gospel, but I did not want to do anything
without your consent, so that the good you do might not be forced
but voluntary. Perhaps this is why he was away from you for a
while, that you might have him back forever, no longer as a slave
but more than a slave, a brother, beloved especially to me, but
even more so to you, as a man and in the Lord. So if you regard me
as a partner, welcome him as you would me. And if he has done you
any injustice or owes you anything, charge it to me. I, Paul,
write this in my own hand: I will pay. May I not tell you that you
owe me your very self. Yes, brother, may I profit from you in the
Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ. With trust in your compliance I
write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. At
the same time prepare a guest room for me, for I hope to be
granted to you through your prayers. [PHLM 1:7-22]
Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: "Oh, that today you
would hear his voice, 'Harden not your hearts as at the rebellion
in the day of testing in the desert, where your ancestors tested
and tried me and saw my works for forty years. Because of this I
was provoked with that generation and I said, "They have
always been of erring heart, and they do not know my ways."
As I swore in my wrath, "They shall not enter into my
rest."' Take care, brothers, that none of you may have
an evil and unfaithful heart, so as to forsake the living God.
Encourage yourselves daily while it is still "today," so
that none of you may grow hardened by the deceit of sin. We have
become partners of Christ if only we hold the beginning of the
reality firm until the end, for it is said: "Oh, that today
you would hear his voice: 'Harden not your hearts as at the
rebellion.'" Who were those who rebelled when they heard? Was
it not all those who came out of Egypt under Moses? With whom was
he "provoked for forty years"? Was it not those who had
sinned, whose corpses fell in the desert? And to whom did he
"swear that they should not enter into his rest," if not
to those who were disobedient? And we see that they could not
enter for lack of faith." [HEB 3:7-19]
Therefore, let us be on our guard while the promise of entering
into his rest remains, that none of you seem to have failed. For
in fact we have received the good news just as they did. But the
word that they heard did not profit them, for they were not united
in faith with those who listened. For we who believed enter into
(that) rest, just as he has said: "As I swore in my wrath,
'They shall not enter into my rest,'" and yet his works were
accomplished at the foundation of the world. For he has spoken
somewhere about the seventh day in this manner, "And God
rested on the seventh day from all his works"; and again, in
the previously mentioned place, "They shall not enter into my
rest." Therefore, since it remains that some will enter into
it, and those who formerly received the good news did not enter
because of disobedience, he once more set a day,
"today," when long afterwards he spoke through David, as
already quoted: "Oh, that today you would hear his voice:
'Harden not your hearts.'" Now if Joshua had given them rest,
he would not have spoken afterwards of another day. Therefore, a
sabbath rest still remains for the people of God. And whoever
enters into God's rest, rests from his own works as God did from
his. Therefore, let us strive to enter into that rest, so that no
one may fall after the same example of disobedience. Indeed, the
word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged
sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and
marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.
No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and
exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account. [HEB
4:1-13]
For if that first covenant had been faultless, no place would
have been sought for a second one. But he finds fault with them
and says: "Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I
will conclude a new covenant with the house of Israel and the
house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their
fathers the day I took them by the hand to lead them forth from
the land of Egypt; for they did not stand by my covenant and I
ignored them, says the Lord. But this is the covenant I will
establish with the house of Israel after those days, says the
Lord: I will put my laws in their minds and I will write them upon
their hearts. I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
And they shall not teach, each one his fellow citizen and kinsman,
saying, 'Know the Lord,' for all shall know me, from least to
greatest. For I will forgive their evildoing and remember their
sins no more." When he speaks of a "new" covenant, he declares the first one obsolete. And what has become obsolete
and has grown old is close to disappearing. [HEB 8:7-13]
Then he says, "Behold, I come to do your will." He
takes away the first to establish the second. By this
"will," we have been consecrated through the offering of
the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Every priest stands daily
at his ministry, offering frequently those same sacrifices that
can never take away sins. But this one offered one sacrifice for
sins, and took his seat forever at the right hand of God; now he
waits until his enemies are made his footstool. For by one
offering he has made perfect forever those who are being
consecrated. The Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after
saying: "This is the covenant I will establish with them
after those days, says the Lord: 'I will put my laws in their
hearts, and I will write them upon their minds,'" he also
says: "Their sins and their evildoing I will remember no
more." Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no
longer offering for sin. Therefore, brothers, since through the
blood of Jesus we have confidence of entrance into the sanctuary
by the new and living way he opened for us through the veil, that
is, his flesh, and since we have "a great priest over the
house of God," let us approach with a sincere heart and in
absolute trust, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil
conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. Let us hold
unwaveringly to our confession that gives us hope, for he who made
the promise is trustworthy. [HEB 10:9-23]
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of
witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that
clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us
while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of
faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the
cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of
the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from
sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. In
your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point
of shedding blood. You have also forgotten the exhortation
addressed to you as sons: "My son, do not disdain the
discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him; for
whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he
acknowledges." Endure your trials as "discipline";
God treats you as sons. For what "son" is there whom his
father does not discipline? If you are without discipline, in
which all have shared, you are not sons but bastards. Besides
this, we have had our earthly fathers to discipline us, and we
respected them. Should we not (then) submit all the more to the
Father of spirits and live? They disciplined us for a short time
as seemed right to them, but he does so for our benefit, in order
that we may share his holiness. At the time, all discipline seems
a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful
fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it. So
strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight
paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be dislocated but
healed. [HEB 12:1-13]
Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you.
Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Do not be
carried away by all kinds of strange teaching. It is good to have
our hearts strengthened by grace and not by foods, which do not
benefit those who live by them. We have an altar from which those
who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat. [Taken from HEB 13:7-10]
If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, his religion is vain.
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows
in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world. [JMS
1:26-27]
Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show his works
by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you
have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not
boast and be false to the truth. Wisdom of this kind does not come
down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where
jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every
foul practice. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure,
then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits,
without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness
is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. [JMS 3:13-18]
So submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee
from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse
your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you of two minds.
Begin to lament, to mourn, to weep. Let your laughter be turned
into mourning and your joy into dejection. Humble yourselves
before the Lord and he will exalt you. [Taken from JMS 4:7-10]
Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late
rains. You too must be patient. Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand.
[JMS 5:7-8]
Since you have purified yourselves by obedience to the truth
for sincere mutual love, love one another intensely from a (pure)
heart. [1PT 1:22]
Likewise, you wives should be subordinate to your husbands so
that, even if some disobey the word, they may be won over without
a word by their wives' conduct when they observe your reverent and
chaste behavior. Your adornment should not be an external one:
braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or dressing in fine
clothes, but rather the hidden character of the heart, expressed
in the imperishable beauty of a gentle and calm disposition, which
is precious in the sight of God. For this is also how the holy
women who hoped in God once used to adorn themselves and were
subordinate to their husbands; thus Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling
him "lord." You are her children when you do what is
good and fear no intimidation. Likewise, you husbands should live
with your wives in understanding, showing honor to the weaker
female sex, since we are joint heirs of the gift of life, so that
your prayers may not be hindered. [1PT 3:1-7]
Now who is going to harm you if you are enthusiastic for what
is good? But even if you should suffer because of righteousness,
blessed are you. Do not be afraid or terrified with fear of them,
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to
give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your
hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your
conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who defame
your good conduct in Christ may themselves be put to shame. [1PT
3:13-16]
I shall also make every effort to enable you always to remember
these things after my departure. We did not follow cleverly
devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of
our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his
majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when
that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory,
"This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well
pleased." We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven
while we were with him on the holy mountain. Moreover, we possess
the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do
well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place,
until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Know
this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is
a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came
through human will; but rather human beings moved by the Holy Spirit
spoke under the influence of God. [2PT 1:15-21]
Their eyes are full of adultery and insatiable for sin. They
seduce unstable people, and their hearts are trained in greed.
Accursed children! Abandoning the straight road, they have gone
astray, following the road of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved
payment for wrongdoing, but he received a rebuke for his own
crime: a mute beast spoke with a human voice and restrained the
prophet's madness. These people are waterless springs and mists
driven by a gale; for them the gloom of darkness has been
reserved. For, talking empty bombast, they seduce with licentious
desires of the flesh those who have barely escaped from people who
live in error. They promise them freedom, though they themselves
are slaves of corruption, for a person is a slave of whatever
overcomes him. For if they, having escaped the defilements of the
world through the knowledge of (our) Lord and savior Jesus Christ,
again become entangled and overcome by them, their last condition
is worse than their first. For it would have been better for them
not to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it
to turn back from the holy commandment handed down to them. What
is expressed in the true proverb has happened to them, "The
dog returns to its own vomit," and "A bathed sow returns
to wallowing in the mire." [Taken from 2PT 2:14-22]
For this is the message you have heard from the beginning: we
should love one another, unlike Cain who belonged to the evil one
and slaughtered his brother. Why did he slaughter him? Because his
own works were evil, and those of his brother righteous. Do not be
amazed, (then,) brothers, if the world hates you. We know that we
have passed from death to life because we love our brothers.
Whoever does not love remains in death. Everyone who hates his
brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal
life remaining in him. The way we came to know love was that he
laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for
our brothers. If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in
need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in
him? Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and
truth. (Now) this is how we shall know that we belong to the truth
and reassure our hearts before him in whatever our hearts condemn,
for God is greater than our hearts and knows everything. Beloved,
if (our) hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence in God and
receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments
and do what pleases him. And his commandment is this: we should
believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another
just as he commanded us. Those who keep his commandments remain in
him, and he in them, and the way we know that he remains in us is
from the Spirit that he gave us. [1JN 3:11-24]
I have given her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of
her harlotry. So I will cast her on a sickbed and plunge those who
commit adultery with her into intense suffering unless they repent
of her works. I will also put her children to death. Thus shall
all the churches come to know that I am the searcher of hearts and
minds and that I will give each of you what your works deserve. [Taken
