He had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a
town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob
had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there. Jesus, tired
from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon. A
woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give
me a drink." His disciples had gone into the town to buy
food. The Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you, a Jew,
ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?" (For Jews use
nothing in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered and said to
her, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you,
'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have
given you living water." (The woman) said to him, "Sir,
you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then
can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father
Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his
children and his flocks?" Jesus answered and said to her,
"Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but
whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water
I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to
              eternal life." [JN 4:4-14]
Jesus answered and said to them, "Amen,
amen, I say to you, a son cannot do anything on his own, but only
what he sees his father doing; for what he does, his son will do
also. For the Father loves his Son and shows him everything that
he himself does, and he will show him greater works than these, so
that you may be amazed. For just as the Father raises the dead and
gives life, so also does the Son give life to whomever he wishes.
Nor does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to
his Son, so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the
Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father
who sent him. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and
believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not come
to condemnation, but has passed from death to life. Amen, amen, I
say to you, the hour is coming and is now here when the dead will
hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to his
Son the possession of life in himself. And he gave him power to
exercise judgment, because he is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed
at this, because the hour is coming in which all who are in the
tombs will hear his voice and will come out, those who have done
good deeds to the resurrection of life, but those who have done
wicked deeds to the resurrection of condemnation. I cannot
do anything on my own; I judge as I hear, and my judgment is just,
because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent
              me." [JN 5:19-30]
When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his
disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to
Capernaum looking for Jesus. And when they found him across the
sea they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"
Jesus answered them and said, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you
are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate
the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but
for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man
will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal."
So they said to him, "What can we do to accomplish the works
of God?" Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the
work of God, that you believe in the one he sent." So they
said to him, "What sign can you do, that we may see and
believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the
desert, as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to
eat.'" So Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you,
it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives
you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which
comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." So they
said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always." Jesus
said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me
will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.
But I told you that although you have seen (me), you do not
believe. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and
I will not reject anyone who comes to me, because I came down from
heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.
And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not
lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it (on)
the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who
sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I
shall raise him (on) the last day." The Jews murmured about
him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from
heaven," and they said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of
Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say,
'I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus answered and said to
them, "Stop murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to me
unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on
the last day. It is written in the prophets: 'They shall all be
taught by God.' Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from
him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the
one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to
you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life.
Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is
the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and
not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever
eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give
is my flesh for the life of the world." The Jews quarreled
among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us (his)
flesh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to
you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his
blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and
drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last
day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in
him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of
the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because
of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your
ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will
live forever." These things he said while teaching in the
              synagogue in Capernaum. [JN 6:24-59]
Then many of his disciples who were listening
said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" Since
Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said
to them, "Does this shock you? What if you were to see the
Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that
gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have
spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you who
do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who
would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said,
"For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me
unless it is granted him by my Father." As a result of this,
many (of) his disciples returned to their former way of life and
no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do
you also want to leave?" Simon Peter answered him,
"Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal
life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the
Holy One of God." Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose
you twelve? Yet is not one of you a devil?" He was referring
to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot; it was he who would betray
him, one of the Twelve. [JN 6:60-71]
"Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not
enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a
thief and a robber. But whoever enters through the gate is the
shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the
sheep hear his voice, as he calls his own sheep by name and leads
them out. When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of
them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice.
But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him,
because they do not recognize the voice of strangers."
Although Jesus used this figure of speech, they did not realize
what he was trying to tell them. So Jesus said again, "Amen,
amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came
(before me) are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen
to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved,
and will come in and go out and find pasture." [Taken from JN
              10:1-9]
The feast of the Dedication was then taking
place in Jerusalem. It was winter. And Jesus walked about in the
temple area on the Portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around
him and said to him, "How long are you going to keep us in
suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly." Jesus
answered them, "I told you and you do not believe. The works
I do in my Father's name testify to me. But you do not believe,
because you are not among my sheep. My sheep hear my voice; I know
them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall
never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who
has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take
them out of the Father's hand. The Father and I are one." The
Jews again picked up rocks to stone him. [JN 10:22-31]
Now there were some Greeks among those who had
come up to worship at the feast. They came to Philip, who was from
Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, "Sir, we would like to
see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and
Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour
has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to
you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it
remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much
fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life
in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me
must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The
Father will honor whoever serves me. I am troubled now. Yet what
should I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But it was for
this purpose that I came to this hour. Father, glorify your
name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified
it and will glorify it again." The crowd there heard it and
said it was thunder; but others said, "An angel has spoken to
him." Jesus answered and said, "This voice did not come
for my sake but for yours. Now is the time of judgment on this
world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And when I
am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself."
He said this indicating the kind of death he would die.
              [Taken from JN 12:20-33]
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You
have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father's house
there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have
told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go
and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you
to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where (I) am going
you know the way." Thomas said to him, "Master, we do
not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" Jesus
said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one
comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you
will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have
seen him." Philip said to him, "Master, show us the
Father, and that will be enough for us." Jesus said to him,
"Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not
know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can
you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the
Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do
not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his
works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,
or else, believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I
say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do,
and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the
Father. And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the
Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything of me in
my name, I will do it." [JN 14:1-14]
When Jesus had said this, he raised his eyes to
heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come. Give glory to
your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you gave him
authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to all
you gave him. Now this is eternal life, that they should know you,
the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. I
glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me
to do. Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had
with you before the world began. I revealed your name to those
whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you
gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that
everything you gave me is from you, because the words you gave to
me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly
understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you
sent me. I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the
ones you have given me, because they are yours, and everything of
mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been
glorified in them. And now I will no longer be in the world, but
they are in the world, while I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep
them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one
just as we are." [JN 17:1-11]
When he had said this, as they were looking on,
he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. While
they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly
two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. They said,
"Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the
sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will
return in the same way as you have seen him going into
              heaven." [ACTS 1:9-11]
When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they
were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the
sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire
house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as
of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And
they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in
different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now
there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in
Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they
were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own
language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked,
"Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then
how does each of us hear them in his own native language?" [Taken from ACTS
              2:1-8]
"My brothers, one can confidently say to
you about the patriarch David that he died and was buried, and his
tomb is in our midst to this day. But since he was a prophet and
knew that God had sworn an oath to him that he would set one of
his descendants upon his throne, he foresaw and spoke of the
resurrection of the Messiah, that neither was he abandoned to the
netherworld nor did his flesh see corruption. God raised this
Jesus; of this we are all witnesses. Exalted at the right hand of
God, he received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father
and poured it forth, as you (both) see and hear. For David did not
go up into heaven, but he himself said: 'The Lord said
to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand until I make your
enemies your footstool."' Therefore let the whole house of
Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and
Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified." Now when they heard
this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter and the
other apostles, "What are we to do, my brothers?" Peter
(said) to them, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in
the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you
will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is made
to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the
Lord our God will call." He testified with many other
arguments, and was exhorting them, "Save yourselves from this
corrupt generation." Those who accepted his message were
baptized, and about three thousand persons were added that day. [ACTS
              2:29-41]
Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your
sins may be wiped away, and that the Lord may grant you times of
refreshment and send you the Messiah already appointed for you,
Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the times of universal
restoration of which God spoke through the mouth of his holy
prophets from of old. [ACTS 3:19-21]
On the next day, their leaders, elders, and
scribes were assembled in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest,
Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly
class. They brought them into their presence and questioned them,
"By what power or by what name have you done this?" Then
Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, answered them, "Leaders
of the people and elders: If we are being examined today about a
good deed done to a cripple, namely, by what means he was saved,
then all of you and all the people of Israel should know that it
was in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean whom you crucified,
whom God raised from the dead; in his name this man stands before
you healed. He is 'the stone rejected by you, the builders, which
has become the cornerstone.' There is no salvation through anyone
else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human
race by which we are to be saved." [ACTS 4:5-12]
After their release they went back to their own
people and reported what the chief priests and elders had told
them. And when they heard it, they raised their voices to God with
one accord and said, "Sovereign Lord, maker of heaven and
earth and the sea and all that is in them, you said by the Holy Spirit
through the mouth of our father David, your servant: 'Why did
the Gentiles rage and the peoples entertain folly? The kings
of the earth took their stand and the princes gathered
together against the Lord and against his anointed.' Indeed
they gathered in this city against your holy servant Jesus whom
you anointed, Herod and Pontius Pilate, together with the Gentiles
and the peoples of Israel, to do what your hand and (your) will
had long ago planned to take place. And now, Lord, take note of
their threats, and enable your servants to speak your word with
all boldness, as you stretch forth (your) hand to heal, and signs
and wonders are done through the name of your holy servant
Jesus." As they prayed, the place where they were gathered
shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued
to speak the word of God with boldness.
 [ACTS 4:23-31]
When they heard this, they were infuriated, and
they ground their teeth at him. But he, filled with the Holy Spirit,
looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus
standing at the right hand of God, and he said, "Behold, I
see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right
hand of God." But they cried out in a loud voice, covered
their ears, and rushed upon him together. They threw him out of
the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid down their
cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. As they were stoning
Stephen, he called out, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
Then he fell to his knees and cried out in a loud voice,
"Lord, do not hold this sin against them"; and when he
said this, he fell asleep. [ACTS 7:54-60]
"Men, why are you doing this? We are of the
same nature as you, human beings. We proclaim to you good news
that you should turn from these idols to the living God, 'who made
heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them.' In past
generations he allowed all Gentiles to go their own ways; yet, in
bestowing his goodness, he did not leave himself without witness,
for he gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, and filled
you with nourishment and gladness for your hearts." [Taken from ACTS
              14:15-17]
Then Paul stood up at the Areopagus and said:
"You Athenians, I see that in every respect you are very
religious. For as I walked around looking carefully at your
shrines, I even discovered an altar inscribed, 'To an Unknown
God.' What therefore you unknowingly worship, I proclaim to you.
The God who made the world and all that is in it, the Lord of
heaven and earth, does not dwell in sanctuaries made by human
hands, nor is he served by human hands because he needs anything.
Rather it is he who gives to everyone life and breath and
everything. He made from one the whole human race to dwell on the
entire surface of the earth, and he fixed the ordered seasons and
the boundaries of their regions, so that people might seek God,
even perhaps grope for him and find him, though indeed he is not
far from any one of us. For 'In him we live and move and have our
being,' as even some of your poets have said, 'For we too are his
offspring.' Since therefore we are the offspring of God, we ought
not to think that the divinity is like an image fashioned from
gold, silver, or stone by human art and imagination. God has
overlooked the times of ignorance, but now he demands that all
people everywhere repent because he has established a day on which
he will 'judge the world with justice' through a man he has
appointed, and he has provided confirmation for all by raising him
              from the dead." [ACTS 17:22-31]
"And so, King Agrippa, I was not
disobedient to the heavenly vision. On the contrary, first to
those in Damascus and in Jerusalem and throughout the whole
country of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached the need to
repent and turn to God, and to do works giving evidence of
repentance. That is why the Jews seized me (when I was) in the
temple and tried to kill me. But I have enjoyed God's help to this
very day, and so I stand here testifying to small and great alike,
saying nothing different from what the prophets and Moses
foretold, that the Messiah must suffer and that, as the first to
rise from the dead, he would proclaim light both to our people and
              to the Gentiles." [ACTS 26:19-23]
The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from
heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress
the truth by their wickedness. For what can be known about God is
evident to them, because God made it evident to them. Ever since
the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal
power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived
in what he has made. As a result, they have no excuse; for
although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or
give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and
their senseless minds were darkened. While claiming to be wise,
they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for
the likeness of an image of mortal man or of birds or of
four-legged animals or of snakes. Therefore, God handed them over
to impurity through the lusts of their hearts for the mutual
degradation of their bodies. They exchanged the truth of God for a
lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the
creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. [ROM 1:18-25]
Yet we do speak a wisdom to those who are
mature, but not a wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this
age who are passing away. Rather, we speak God's wisdom,
mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for
our glory, and which none of the rulers of this age knew; for if
they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of
glory. But as it is written: "What eye has not seen, and
ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human
heart, what God has prepared for those who love him,"
this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit
scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God. [Taken from 1COR
              2:6-10]
You fool! What you sow is not brought to life
unless it dies. And what you sow is not the body that is to be but
a bare kernel of wheat, perhaps, or of some other kind; but God
gives it a body as he chooses, and to each of the seeds its own
body. Not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for human
beings, another kind of flesh for animals, another kind of flesh
for birds, and another for fish. There are both heavenly bodies
and earthly bodies, but the brightness of the heavenly is one kind
and that of the earthly another. The brightness of the sun is one
kind, the brightness of the moon another, and the brightness of
the stars another. For star differs from star in brightness. So
also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown corruptible; it
is raised incorruptible. It is sown dishonorable; it is raised
glorious. It is sown weak; it is raised powerful. It is sown a
natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural
body, there is also a spiritual one. So, too, it is written,
"The first man, Adam, became a living being," the last
Adam a life-giving spirit. But the spiritual was not first; rather
the natural and then the spiritual. The first man was from the
earth, earthly; the second man, from heaven. As was the earthly
one, so also are the earthly, and as is the heavenly one, so also
are the heavenly. Just as we have borne the image of the earthly
one, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one. This I
declare, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of
God, nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you
a mystery. We shall not all fall asleep, but we will all be
changed, in an instant, in the blink of an eye, at the last
trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised
incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For that which is
corruptible must clothe itself with incorruptibility, and that
which is mortal must clothe itself with immortality. And when this
which is corruptible clothes itself with incorruptibility and this
which is mortal clothes itself with immortality, then the word that
is written shall come about: "Death is swallowed up in victory.
Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your
sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is
the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our
Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be firm,
steadfast, always fully devoted to the work of the Lord, knowing
that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
 [1COR 15:36-58]
For we know that if our earthly dwelling, a tent, should be destroyed,
we have a building from God, a dwelling not made with
hands, eternal in heaven. For in this tent we groan, longing to be
further clothed with our heavenly habitation if indeed, when we
have taken it off, we shall not be found naked. For while we are
in this tent we groan and are weighed down, because we do not wish
to be unclothed but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal
may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has prepared us for
this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a first
installment. So we are always courageous, although we know that
while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we
walk by faith, not by sight. Yet we are courageous, and we would
rather leave the body and go home to the Lord. Therefore, we
aspire to please him, whether we are at home or away. For we must
all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one
may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body,
              whether good or evil.
 [2COR 5:1-10]
I must boast; not that it is profitable, but I
will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know someone
in Christ who, fourteen years ago (whether in the body or out of
the body I do not know, God knows), was caught up to the third
heaven. And I know that this person (whether in the body or out of
the body I do not know, God knows) was caught up into Paradise and
heard ineffable things, which no one may utter. About this person
I will boast, but about myself I will not boast, except about my
              weaknesses. [Taken from 2COR 12:1-5]
I am amazed that you are so quickly forsaking
the one who called you by (the) grace (of Christ) for a different
gospel (not that there is another). But there are some who are
disturbing you and wish to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even
if we or an angel from heaven should preach (to you) a gospel
other than the one that we preached to you, let that one be
accursed! As we have said before, and now I say again, if anyone
preaches to you a gospel other than the one that you received, let
that one be accursed! Am I now currying favor with human beings or
God? Or am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to
please people, I would not be a slave of Christ. [GAL 1:6-10]
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing
in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of
the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love he
destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in
accord with the favor of his will, for the praise of the glory of
his grace that he granted us in the beloved. In him we have
redemption by his blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in
accord with the riches of his grace that he lavished upon us. In
all wisdom and insight, he has made known to us the mystery of his
will in accord with his favor that he set forth in him as a plan
for the fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ, in
heaven and on earth. [EPH 1:3-10]
May the eyes of (your) hearts be enlightened, that you may know
what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of
glory in his inheritance among the holy ones, and what is the
surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe, in accord
with the exercise of his great might, which he worked in Christ,
raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the
heavens, far above every principality, authority, power, and
dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but
also in the one to come. And he put all things beneath his feet
and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his
body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way.
              [EPH 1:18-23]
You were dead in your transgressions and sins in
which you once lived following the age of this world, following
the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work
in the disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the desires
of our flesh, following the wishes of the flesh and the impulses,
and we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest. But God,
who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us,
even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life
with Christ (by grace you have been saved), raised us up with him,
and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, that in the
ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in
his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been
saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of
God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. For we are his
handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has
prepared in advance, that we should live in them. [EPH 2:1-10]
To me, the very least of all the holy ones, this
grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the inscrutable riches
of Christ, and to bring to light (for all) what is the plan of the
mystery hidden from ages past in God who created all things, so
that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through
the church to the principalities and authorities in the heavens.
This was according to the eternal purpose that he accomplished in
Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness of speech and
confidence of access through faith in him. So I ask you not to
lose heart over my afflictions for you; this is your glory. For
this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in
heaven and on earth is named, that he may grant you in accord with
the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his
Spirit in the inner self, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts
through faith; that you, rooted and grounded in love, may have
strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth
and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ
that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the
fullness of God. Now to him who is able to accomplish far more
than all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us, to him
be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations,
forever and ever. Amen. [EPH 3:8-21]
But grace was given to each of us according to
the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore, it says: "He
ascended on high and took prisoners captive; he gave gifts to
men." What does "he ascended" mean except that he
also descended into the lower (regions) of the earth? The one who
descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens,
that he might fill all things. [Taken from EPH 4:7-10]
Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and
from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be
able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our
struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities,
with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness,
with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor
of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having
done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your
loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a
breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of
peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all
(the) flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of
salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. [EPH
              6:10-17]
Have among yourselves the same attitude that is
also yours in Christ Jesus, Who, though he was in the form of
God, did not regard equality with God something to be
grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a
slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in
appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to
death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly
exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every
name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of
those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the
              Father. [PHIL 2:5-11]
Join with others in being imitators of me,
brothers, and observe those who thus conduct themselves according
to the model you have in us. For many, as I have often told you
and now tell you even in tears, conduct themselves as enemies of
the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction. Their God is their
stomach; their glory is in their "shame." Their minds
are occupied with earthly things. But our citizenship is in
heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body
by the power that enables him also to bring all things into
              subjection to himself. [PHIL 3:17-21]
We always give thanks to God, the Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, for we have heard of your
faith in Christ Jesus and the love that you have for all the holy
ones because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. Of this you
have already heard through the word of truth, the gospel, that has
come to you. Just as in the whole world it is bearing fruit and
growing, so also among you, from the day you heard it and came to
know the grace of God in truth, as you learned it from Epaphras
our beloved fellow slave, who is a trustworthy minister of Christ
on your behalf and who also told us of your love in the Spirit. [COL
              1:3-8]
He is the image of the invisible God, the
firstborn of all creation. For in him were created all things in
heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones
or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created
through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all
things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church. He
is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things
he himself might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness was
pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things for him,
making peace by the blood of his cross (through him), whether
those on earth or those in heaven. And you who once were alienated
and hostile in mind because of evil deeds he has now reconciled in
his fleshly body through his death, to present you holy, without
blemish, and irreproachable before him, provided that you
persevere in the faith, firmly grounded, stable, and not shifting
from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, am a
              minister. [COL 1:15-23]
If then you were raised with Christ, seek what
is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think
of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and
your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life
appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. [COL 3:1-4]
Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly,
realizing that you too have a Master in heaven. [COL 4:1]
For from you the word of the Lord has sounded
forth not only in Macedonia and (in) Achaia, but in every place
your faith in God has gone forth, so that we have no need to say
anything. For they themselves openly declare about us what sort of
reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols
to serve the living and true God and to await his Son from heaven,
whom he raised from (the) dead, Jesus, who delivers us from the
              coming wrath. [1THES 1:8-10]
We do not want you to be unaware, brothers,
about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve
like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died
and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who
have fallen asleep. Indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the
Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the
Lord, will surely not precede those who have fallen asleep. For
the Lord himself, with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel
and with the trumpet of God, will come down from heaven, and the
dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are
left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet
the Lord in the air. Thus we shall always be with the Lord.
Therefore, console one another with these words. [1THES 4:13-18]
We ought to thank God always for you, brothers,
as is fitting, because your faith flourishes ever more, and the
love of every one of you for one another grows ever greater.
Accordingly, we ourselves boast of you in the churches of God
regarding your endurance and faith in all your persecutions and
the afflictions you endure. This is evidence of the just judgment
of God, so that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God
for which you are suffering. For it is surely just on God's part
to repay with afflictions those who are afflicting you, and to
grant rest along with us to you who are undergoing afflictions, at
the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his mighty
angels, in blazing fire, inflicting punishment on those who do not
acknowledge God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our
Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty of eternal ruin, separated
from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power,
when he comes to be glorified among his holy ones and to be
marveled at on that day among all who have believed, for our
testimony to you was believed. [2THES 1:3-10]
At my first defense no one appeared on my
behalf, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them!
But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me
the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might
hear it. And I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will
rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me safe to his
heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen. [2TM
              4:16-18]
In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; in these last days, he spoke to us
through a son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he
created the universe, who is the refulgence of his glory, the very
imprint of his being, and who sustains all things by his mighty
word. When he had accomplished purification from sins, he took his
seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high, as far superior to
the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent
than theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever
say: "You are my son; this day I have begotten
you"? Or again: "I will be a father to him,
and he shall be a son to me"? And again, when he leads the
first-born into the world, he says: "Let all the
angels of God worship him." Of the angels he
says: "He makes his angels winds and his ministers
a fiery flame"; but of the Son: "Your throne, O
God, stands forever and ever; and a righteous scepter is the
scepter of your kingdom. You loved justice and hated
wickedness; therefore God, your God, anointed you with
              the oil of gladness above your companions";
and: "At the beginning, O Lord, you established the
earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands. They will
perish, but you remain; and they will all grow old like a
garment. You will roll them up like a cloak, and like a
garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your
years will have no end." But to which of the angels has he
ever said: "Sit at my right hand until I make your
enemies your footstool"? Are they not all ministering spirits
sent to serve, for the sake of those who are to inherit
              salvation? [HEB 1:1-14]
              Therefore, holy "brothers," sharing in
a heavenly calling, reflect on Jesus, the apostle and high priest
of our confession, who was faithful to the one who appointed him,
just as Moses was "faithful in (all) his house." [Taken from HEB
              3:1-2]
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who
has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold
fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is
unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has
similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin. So let us
confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to
find grace for timely help. [HEB 4:14-16]
For it is impossible in the case of those who
have once been enlightened and tasted the heavenly gift and shared
in the Holy Spirit and tasted the good word of God and the powers
of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to bring them to
repentance again, since they are recrucifying the Son of God for
themselves and holding him up to contempt. Ground that has
absorbed the rain falling upon it repeatedly and brings forth
crops useful to those for whom it is cultivated receives a
blessing from God. But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is
rejected; it will soon be cursed and finally burned. [HEB 6:4-8]
Those priests were many because they were
prevented by death from remaining in office, but he, because he
remains forever, has a priesthood that does not pass away.
Therefore, he is always able to save those who approach God
through him, since he lives forever to make intercession for them.
It was fitting that we should have such a high priest: holy,
innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, higher than the
              heavens. [Taken from HEB 7:23-26]
The main point of what has been said is this: we
have such a high priest, who has taken his seat at the right hand
of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister of the
sanctuary and of the true tabernacle that the Lord, not man, set
up. Now every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and
sacrifices; thus the necessity for this one also to have something
to offer. If then he were on earth, he would not be a priest,
since there are those who offer gifts according to the law. They
worship in a copy and shadow of the heavenly sanctuary, as Moses
was warned when he was about to erect the tabernacle. For he says,
"See that you make everything according to the pattern shown
you on the mountain." Now he has obtained so much more
excellent a ministry as he is mediator of a better covenant,
              enacted on better promises.
              [HEB 8:1-6]
For Christ did not enter into a sanctuary made by hands, a copy of the true one, but heaven itself, that he might now appear before God on our behalf.
              [Taken from HEB 9:24]
All these died in faith. They did not receive
what had been promised but saw it and greeted it from afar and
acknowledged themselves to be strangers and aliens on earth, for
those who speak thus show that they are seeking a homeland. If
they had been thinking of the land from which they had come, they
would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better
homeland, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be
called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. [Taken from
              HEB
              11:13-16]
See that you do not reject the one who speaks.
For if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned
them on earth, how much more in our case if we turn away from the
one who warns from heaven. His voice shook the earth at that time,
but now he has promised, "I will once more shake not only
earth but heaven." That phrase, "once more," points
to (the) removal of shaken, created things, so that what is
unshaken may remain. Therefore, we who are receiving the
unshakable kingdom should have gratitude, with which we should
offer worship pleasing to God in reverence and awe. For our God is
              a consuming fire. [HEB 12:25-29]
Listen, my beloved brothers. Did not God
choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and
heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?
              [JMS 2:5]
But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your "Yes" mean "Yes" and your "No" mean "No," that you may not incur
              condemnation. [JMS 5:12]
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living
hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an
inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in
heaven for you who by the power of God are safeguarded through
faith, to a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final
time. In this you rejoice, although now for a little while you may
have to suffer through various trials, so that the genuineness of
your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though
tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at
the revelation of Jesus Christ. Although you have not seen him you
love him; even though you do not see him now yet believe in him,
you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, as you attain
the goal of (your) faith, the salvation of your souls. Concerning
this salvation, prophets who prophesied about the grace that was
to be yours searched and investigated it, investigating the time
and circumstances that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated
when it testified in advance to the sufferings destined for Christ
and the glories to follow them. It was revealed to them that they
were serving not themselves but you with regard to the things that
have now been announced to you by those who preached the good news
to you (through) the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into
              which angels longed to look.
              [1PT 1:3-12]
For it is better to suffer for doing good, if
that be the will of God, than for doing evil. For Christ also
suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the
unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the
flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit. In it he also went to
preach to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient
while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building
of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved
through water. This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is
not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a
clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who
has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels,
authorities, and powers subject to him.
              [1PT 3:17-22]
His divine power has bestowed on us everything
that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of him who
called us by his own glory and power. Through these, he has
bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that
through them you may come to share in the divine nature, after
escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil
desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your
faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with
self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with
devotion, devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with
love. If these are yours and increase in abundance, they will keep
you from being idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord
Jesus Christ. Anyone who lacks them is blind and shortsighted,
forgetful of the cleansing of his past sins. Therefore, brothers,
be all the more eager to make your call and election firm, for, in
doing so, you will never stumble. For, in this way, entry into the
eternal kingdom of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ will be richly
              provided for you.
              [2PT 1:3-11]
We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we
made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,
but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor
and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to
him from the majestic glory, "This is my Son, my beloved,
with whom I am well pleased." We ourselves heard this voice
come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain.
Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether
reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp
shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star
rises in your hearts. Know this first of all, that there is no
prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation,
for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human
beings moved by the Holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God. [2PT
              1:16-21]
This is now, beloved, the second letter I am
writing to you; through them by way of reminder I am trying to
stir up your sincere disposition, to recall the words previously
spoken by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and
savior through your apostles. Know this first of all, that in the
last days scoffers will come (to) scoff, living according to their
own desires and saying, "Where is the promise of his coming?
From the time when our ancestors fell asleep, everything has
remained as it was from the beginning of creation." They
deliberately ignore the fact that the heavens existed of old and
earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of
God; through these the world that then existed was destroyed,
deluged with water. The present heavens and earth have been
reserved by the same word for fire, kept for the day of judgment
and of destruction of the godless. But do not ignore this one
fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years
and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his
promise, as some regard "delay," but he is patient with
you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come
to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and
then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the
elements will be dissolved by fire, and the earth and everything
done on it will be found out. Since everything is to be dissolved
in this way, what sort of persons ought (you) to be, conducting
yourselves in holiness and devotion, waiting for and hastening the
coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be
dissolved in flames and the elements melted by fire. But according
to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which
righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you await these
things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him,
at peace. And consider the patience of our Lord as salvation, as
our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him,
also wrote to you, speaking of these things as he does in all his
letters. In them there are some things hard to understand that the
ignorant and unstable distort to their own destruction, just as
              they do the other scriptures.
 [2PT 3:1-16]
See what love the Father has bestowed on us that
we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are. The reason
the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved,
we are God's children now; what we shall be has not yet been
revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like
him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope
based on him makes himself pure, as he is pure. [1JN 3:1-3]
"The victor will thus be dressed in
white, and I will never erase his name from the book of life but
will acknowledge his name in the presence of my Father and of his
              angels." [RV 3:5]
"The victor I will make into a
pillar in the temple of my God, and he will never leave it again.
On him I will inscribe the name of my God and the name of the city
of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from
my God, as well as my new name." [RV 3:12]
After this I had a vision of an open door to
heaven, and I heard the trumpetlike voice that had spoken to me
before, saying, "Come up here and I will show you what must
happen afterwards." At once I was caught up in spirit. A
throne was there in heaven, and on the throne sat one whose
appearance sparkled like jasper and carnelian. Around the throne
was a halo as brilliant as an emerald. Surrounding the throne I
saw twenty-four other thrones on which twenty-four elders sat,
dressed in white garments and with gold crowns on their heads.
From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of
thunder. Seven flaming torches burned in front of the throne, which are the seven spirits of God. In front of the throne was
something that resembled a sea of glass like crystal. In the
center and around the throne, there were four living creatures
covered with eyes in front and in back. The first creature
resembled a lion, the second was like a calf, the third had a face
like that of a human being, and the fourth looked like an eagle in
flight. The four living creatures, each of them with six wings,
were covered with eyes inside and out. Day and night they do not
stop exclaiming: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty,
who was, and who is, and who is to come." Whenever
the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to the one
who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the
twenty-four elders fall down before the one who sits on the throne
and worship him, who lives forever and ever. They throw down their
crowns before the throne, exclaiming: "Worthy are you, Lord
our God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all
things; because of your will they came to be and were
              created." [RV 4:1-11]
I saw a scroll in the right hand of the one who
sat on the throne. It had writing on both sides and was sealed
with seven seals. Then I saw a mighty angel who proclaimed in a
loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its
seals?" But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth
was able to open the scroll or to examine it. I shed many tears
because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to examine
it. One of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. The lion of
the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has triumphed, enabling him
to open the scroll with its seven seals." Then I saw standing
in the midst of the throne and the four living creatures and the
elders, a Lamb that seemed to have been slain. He had seven horns
and seven eyes; these are the (seven) spirits of God sent out into
the whole world. He came and received the scroll from the right
hand of the one who sat on the throne. When he took it, the four
living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the
Lamb. Each of the elders held a harp and gold bowls filled with
incense, which are the prayers of the holy ones. They sang a new
hymn: "Worthy are you to receive the scroll and to break open
its seals, for you were slain and with your blood you purchased for
God those from every tribe and tongue, people and nation. You made
them a kingdom and priests for our God, and they will reign on
earth." I looked again and heard the voices of many angels
who surrounded the throne and the living creatures and the elders.
They were countless in number, and they cried out in a loud
voice: "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and
riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing."
Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the
earth and in the sea, everything in the universe, cry out: "To
the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and
honor, glory and might, forever and ever." The four living
creatures answered, "Amen," and the elders fell down and
              worshiped. [RV 5:1-14]
When he broke open the fifth seal, I saw
underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slaughtered
because of the witness they bore to the word of God. They cried
out in a loud voice, "How long will it be, holy and true
master, before you sit in judgment and avenge our blood on the
inhabitants of the earth?" Each of them was given a white
robe, and they were told to be patient a little while longer until
the number was filled of their fellow servants and brothers who
were going to be killed as they had been.
              [RV 6:9-11]
After this I had a vision of a great multitude,
which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and
tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing
white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. They cried
out in a loud voice: "Salvation comes from our God, who is
seated on the throne, and from the Lamb." All the angels
stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living
creatures. They prostrated themselves before the throne, worshiped
God, and exclaimed: "Amen. Blessing and glory, wisdom and
thanksgiving, honor, power, and might be to our God forever and
ever. Amen." Then one of the elders spoke up and said to me,
"Who are these wearing white robes, and where did they come
from?" I said to him, "My lord, you are the one who
knows." He said to me, "These are the ones who have
survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes
and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this
reason they stand before God's throne and worship him day and
night in his temple. The one who sits on the throne will shelter
them. They will not hunger or thirst anymore, nor will the sun or
any heat strike them. For the Lamb who is in the center of the
throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving
water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." [RV
              7:9-17]
When he broke open the seventh seal, there was
silence in heaven for about half an hour. And I saw that the seven
angels who stood before God were given seven trumpets. Another
angel came and stood at the altar, holding a gold censer. He was
given a great quantity of incense to offer, along with the prayers
of all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was before the
throne. The smoke of the incense along with the prayers of the
holy ones went up before God from the hand of the angel. Then the
angel took the censer, filled it with burning coals from the
altar, and hurled it down to the earth. There were peals of
thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake. [RV
              8:1-5]
Then I saw another mighty angel come down from
heaven wrapped in a cloud, with a halo around his head; his face
was like the sun and his feet were like pillars of fire. In his
hand he held a small scroll that had been opened. He placed his
right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, and then he
cried out in a loud voice as a lion roars. When he cried out, the
seven thunders raised their voices, too. When the seven thunders
had spoken, I was about to write it down; but I heard a voice from
heaven say, "Seal up what the seven thunders have spoken, but
do not write it down." Then the angel I saw standing on the
sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven and swore by
the one who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and earth
and sea and all that is in them, "There shall be no more
delay. At the time when you hear the seventh angel blow his
trumpet, the mysterious plan of God shall be fulfilled, as he
promised to his servants the prophets." Then the voice that I
had heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, "Go, take
the scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing
on the sea and on the land." So I went up to the angel and
told him to give me the small scroll. He said to me, "Take
and swallow it. It will turn your stomach sour, but in your mouth
it will taste as sweet as honey." I took the small scroll
from the angel's hand and swallowed it. In my mouth it was like
sweet honey, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. Then
someone said to me, "You must prophesy again about many
peoples, nations, tongues, and kings." [RV 10:1-11]
Then they heard a loud voice from heaven say to
them, "Come up here." So they went up to heaven in a
cloud as their enemies looked on. At that moment there was a great
earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell in ruins. Seven thousand
people were killed during the earthquake; the rest were terrified
and gave glory to the God of heaven. [Taken from RV 11:12-13]
Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet. There
were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world
now belongs to our Lord and to his Anointed, and he will reign
forever and ever." The twenty-four elders who sat on their
thrones before God prostrated themselves and worshiped God and
said: "We give thanks to you, Lord God almighty, who are and
who were. For you have assumed your great power and have
established your reign. The nations raged, but your wrath has
come, and the time for the dead to be judged, and to recompense
your servants, the prophets, and the holy ones and those who fear
your name, the small and the great alike, and to destroy those who
destroy the earth." Then God's temple in heaven was opened,
and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple. There
were flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder, an
earthquake, and a violent hailstorm. [RV 11:15-19]
A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman
clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her
head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud
in pain as she labored to give birth. Then another sign appeared
in the sky; it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten
horns, and on its heads were seven diadems. Its tail swept away a
third of the stars in the sky and hurled them down to the earth.
Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth, to
devour her child when she gave birth. She gave birth to a son, a
male child, destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod. Her
child was caught up to God and his throne. The woman herself fled
into the desert where she had a place prepared by God, that there
she might be taken care of for twelve hundred and sixty days. Then
war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against
the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did
not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.
The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and
Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and
its angels were thrown down with it. Then I heard a loud voice in
heaven say: "Now have salvation and power come, and the
kingdom of our God and the authority of his Anointed. For the
accuser of our brothers is cast out, who accuses them before our
God day and night. They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and
by the word of their testimony; love for life did not deter them
from death. Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in
them. But woe to you, earth and sea, for the Devil has come down
to you in great fury, for he knows he has but a short time."
              [RV 12:1-12]
The beast was given a mouth uttering proud
boasts and blasphemies, and it was given authority to act for
forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against
God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling and those who dwell in
heaven. It was also allowed to wage war against the holy ones and
conquer them, and it was granted authority over every tribe,
people, tongue, and nation. All the inhabitants of the earth will
worship it, all whose names were not written from the foundation
of the world in the book of life, which belongs to the Lamb who
              was slain. [RV 13:5-8]
Then I saw another beast come up out of the
earth; it had two horns like a lamb's but spoke like a dragon. It
wielded all the authority of the first beast in its sight and made
the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose
mortal wound had been healed. It performed great signs, even
making fire come down from heaven to earth in the sight of
everyone. It deceived the inhabitants of the earth with the signs
it was allowed to perform in the sight of the first beast, telling
them to make an image for the beast who had been wounded by the
sword and revived. [Taken from RV 13:11-14]
Then I looked and there was the Lamb standing on
Mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand who had
his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads. I heard
a sound from heaven like the sound of rushing water or a loud peal
of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing
their harps. They were singing (what seemed to be) a new hymn
before the throne, before the four living creatures and the
elders. No one could learn this hymn except the hundred and
forty-four thousand who had been ransomed from the earth. These
are they who were not defiled with women; they are virgins and
these are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They have
been ransomed as the firstfruits of the human race for God and the
Lamb. On their lips no deceit has been found; they are
              unblemished. [RV 14:1-5]
Then I saw another angel flying high overhead,
with everlasting good news to announce to those who dwell on
earth, to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people. He said in a
loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, for his time has
come to sit in judgment. Worship him who made heaven and earth and
sea and springs of water." A second angel followed,
saying: "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, that
made all the nations drink the wine of her licentious
passion." A third angel followed them and said in a loud
voice, "Anyone who worships the beast or its image, or
accepts its mark on forehead or hand, will also drink the wine of
God's fury, poured full strength into the cup of his wrath, and
will be tormented in burning sulfur before the holy angels and
before the Lamb. The smoke of the fire that torments them will
rise forever and ever, and there will be no relief day or night
for those who worship the beast or its image or accept the mark of
its name." Here is what sustains the holy ones who keep God's
commandments and their faith in Jesus. I heard a voice from heaven
say, "Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord
from now on." "Yes," said the Spirit, "let
them find rest from their labors, for their works accompany
              them." [RV 14:6-13]
Then I looked and there was a white cloud, and
sitting on the cloud one who looked like a son of man, with a gold
crown on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. Another angel
came out of the temple, crying out in a loud voice to the one
sitting on the cloud, "Use your sickle and reap the harvest,
for the time to reap has come, because the earth's harvest is
fully ripe." So the one who was sitting on the cloud swung
his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested. Then
another angel came out of the temple in heaven who also had a
sharp sickle. Then another angel (came) from the altar, (who) was
in charge of the fire, and cried out in a loud voice to the one
who had the sharp sickle, "Use your sharp sickle and cut the
clusters from the earth's vines, for its grapes are ripe." So
the angel swung his sickle over the earth and cut the earth's
vintage. He threw it into the great wine press of God's fury. The
wine press was trodden outside the city and blood poured out of
the wine press to the height of a horse's bridle for two hundred
              miles. [RV 14:14-20]
Then I saw in heaven another sign, great and awe-inspiring: seven angels with the seven last plagues, for through them God's fury is accomplished.
              [RV 15:1]
After this I had another vision. The temple that
is the heavenly tent of testimony opened, and the seven angels
with the seven plagues came out of the temple. They were dressed
in clean white linen, with a gold sash around their chests. One of
the four living creatures gave the seven angels seven gold bowls
filled with the fury of God, who lives forever and ever. Then the
temple became so filled with the smoke from God's glory and might
that no one could enter it until the seven plagues of the seven
angels had been accomplished. [RV 15:5-8]
The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast.
Its kingdom was plunged into darkness, and people bit their tongues in pain
and blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and sores. But they did not repent of their works.
              [RV 16:10-11]
After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth became illumined by his splendor.
              [RV 18:1]
Then I heard another voice from heaven say: "Depart from her,
my people, so as not to take part in her sins and receive a share in her plagues, for her sins are piled up to the sky, and God remembers her crimes."
              [Taken from RV 18:4-5]
They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping
and mourning: "Alas, alas, great city, in which all who had ships at sea
grew rich from her wealth. In one hour she has been ruined. Rejoice over her, heaven, you holy ones, apostles, and prophets.
For God has judged your case against her." [RV 18:19-20]
After this I heard what sounded like the loud
voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying: "Alleluia!
Salvation, glory, and might belong to our God, for true and just
are his judgments. He has condemned the great harlot who corrupted
the earth with her harlotry. He has avenged on her the blood of
his servants." They said a second time: "Alleluia! Smoke
will rise from her forever and ever." The twenty-four elders
and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sat
on the throne, saying, "Amen. Alleluia." A voice coming
from the throne said: "Praise our God, all you his servants,
(and) you who revere him, small and great." Then I heard
something like the sound of a great multitude or the sound of
rushing water or mighty peals of thunder, as they said:
"Alleluia! The Lord has established his reign, (our) God, the
almighty. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory. For the
wedding day of the Lamb has come, his bride has made herself
ready. She was allowed to wear a bright, clean linen
garment." (The linen represents the righteous deeds of the
holy ones.) Then the angel said to me, "Write this: Blessed
are those who have been called to the wedding feast of the
Lamb." And he said to me, "These words are true; they
              come from God." [RV 19:1-9]
Then I saw the heavens opened, and there was a
white horse; its rider was (called) "Faithful and True."
He judges and wages war in righteousness. His eyes were (like) a
fiery flame, and on his head were many diadems. He had a name
inscribed that no one knows except himself. He wore a cloak that
had been dipped in blood, and his name was called the Word of God.
The armies of heaven followed him, mounted on white horses and
wearing clean white linen. Out of his mouth came a sharp sword to
strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod, and he
himself will tread out in the wine press the wine of the fury and
wrath of God the almighty. He has a name written on his cloak and
on his thigh, "King of kings and Lord of lords." [RV
              19:11-16]
Then I saw an angel come down from heaven,
holding in his hand the key to the abyss and a heavy chain. He
seized the dragon, the ancient serpent, which is the Devil or
Satan, and tied it up for a thousand years and threw it into the
abyss, which he locked over it and sealed, so that it could no
longer lead the nations astray until the thousand years are
completed. After this, it is to be released for a short time. Then
I saw thrones; those who sat on them were entrusted with judgment.
I also saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their
witness to Jesus and for the word of God, and who had not
worshiped the beast or its image nor had accepted its mark on
their foreheads or hands. They came to life and they reigned with
Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to
life until the thousand years were over. This is the first
resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first
resurrection. The second death has no power over these; they will
be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for
(the) thousand years. When the thousand years are completed, Satan
will be released from his prison. He will go out to deceive the
nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather
them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. They
invaded the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the
holy ones and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and
consumed them. [Taken from RV 20:1-9]
Next I saw a large white throne and the one who
was sitting on it. The earth and the sky fled from his presence
and there was no place for them. I saw the dead, the great and the
lowly, standing before the throne, and scrolls were opened. Then
another scroll was opened, the book of life. The dead were judged
according to their deeds, by what was written in the scrolls. The
sea gave up its dead; then Death and Hades gave up their dead. All
the dead were judged according to their deeds. Then Death and
Hades were thrown into the pool of fire. (This pool of fire is the
second death.) Anyone whose name was not found written in the
book of life was thrown into the pool of fire. [RV 20:11-15]
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The
former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea
was no more. I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming
down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her
husband. I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
"Behold, God's dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell
with them and they will be his people and God himself will always
be with them (as their God). He will wipe every tear from their
eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or
pain, (for) the old order has passed away." The one who sat
on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new."
Then he said, "Write these words down, for they are
trustworthy and true." He said to me, "They are
accomplished. I (am) the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and
the end. To the thirsty I will give a gift from the spring of
life-giving water. The victor will inherit these gifts, and I
shall be his God, and he will be my son. But as for cowards, the
unfaithful, the depraved, murderers, the unchaste, sorcerers,
idol-worshipers, and deceivers of every sort, their lot is in the
burning pool of fire and sulfur, which is the second death."
              [RV 21:1-8]
One of the seven angels who held the seven bowls filled with the
seven last plagues came and said to me, "Come here. I will
show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." He took me in
spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city
Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. It gleamed with the
splendor of God. Its radiance was like that of a precious stone,
like jasper, clear as crystal. It had a massive, high wall, with
twelve gates where twelve angels were stationed and on which names
were inscribed, (the names) of the twelve tribes of the
Israelites. There were three gates facing east, three north, three
south, and three west. The wall of the city had twelve courses of
stones as its foundation, on which were inscribed the twelve names
of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. The one who spoke to me held a
gold measuring rod to measure the city, its gates, and its wall.
The city was square, its length the same as (also) its width. He
measured the city with the rod and found it fifteen hundred miles
in length and width and height. He also measured its wall: one
hundred and forty-four cubits according to the standard unit of
measurement the angel used. The wall was constructed of jasper,
while the city was pure gold, clear as glass. The foundations of
the city wall were decorated with every precious stone; the first
course of stones was jasper, the second sapphire, the third
chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth
carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth
topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh hyacinth, and the
twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the
gates made from a single pearl; and the street of the city was of
pure gold, transparent as glass. I saw no temple in the city, for
its temple is the Lord God almighty and the Lamb. The city had no
need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gave it
light, and its lamp was the Lamb. The nations will walk by its
light, and to it the kings of the earth will bring their treasure.
During the day its gates will never be shut, and there will be no
night there. The treasure and wealth of the nations will be
brought there, but nothing unclean will enter it, nor any (one)
who does abominable things or tells lies. Only those will enter
whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life. [RV 21:9-27]
Then the angel showed me the river of
life-giving water, sparkling like crystal, flowing from the throne
of God and of the Lamb down the middle of its street. On either
side of the river grew the tree of life that produces fruit twelve
times a year, once each month; the leaves of the trees serve as
medicine for the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there
anymore. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his
servants will worship him. They will look upon his face, and his
name will be on their foreheads. Night will be no more, nor will
they need light from lamp or sun, for the Lord God shall give them
light, and they shall reign forever and ever. [RV 22:1-5]
Blessed are they who wash their robes so as to
have the right to the tree of life and enter the city through its
gates. Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the unchaste, the
murderers, the idol-worshipers, and all who love and practice
deceit. "I, Jesus, sent my angel to give you this testimony
for the churches. I am the root and offspring of David, the bright
morning star." The Spirit and the bride say,
"Come." Let the hearer say, "Come." Let the
one who thirsts come forward, and the one who wants it receive the
gift of life-giving water. I warn everyone who hears the prophetic
words in this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him
the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from
the words in this prophetic book, God will take away his share in
the tree of life and in the holy city described in this book.
