I called out: O Lord, you are my father, you are my champion
and my savior; Do not abandon me in time of trouble, in the midst
of storms and dangers. [SIRACH 51:10]
For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder
dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero,
Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. [ISA 9:5]
On that day I will summon my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah; I will clothe him with your robe, and gird him with your sash, and give over to him your authority.
He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open. I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot, to be a place of honor for his family; On him shall hang all the glory of his family: descendants and offspring, all the little dishes, from bowls to jugs. [ISA
22:20-24]
Look to Abraham, your father, and to Sarah, who gave you birth;
When he was but one I called him, I blessed him and made him many.
[ISA 51:2]
If you hold back your foot on the sabbath from following your own pursuits on my holy day;
If you call the sabbath a delight, and the LORD'S holy day honorable;
If you honor it by not following your ways, seeking your own interests, or speaking with
malice - Then you shall delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;
I will nourish you with the heritage of Jacob, your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. [ISA
58:13-14]
Look down from heaven and regard us from your holy and glorious palace!
Where is your zealous care and your might, your surge of pity and your mercy?
O Lord, hold not back, for you are our father. Were Abraham not to know us, nor Israel to acknowledge us,
You, LORD, are our father, our redeemer you are named forever. [ISA
63:15-16]
Yet, O LORD, you are our father; we are the clay and you the
potter: we are all the work of your hands. [ISA 64:7]
Your holy cities have become a desert, Zion is a desert, Jerusalem a waste. Our holy and glorious temple in which our fathers praised you
Has been burned with fire; all that was dear to us is laid waste. Can you hold back, O LORD, after all this? Can you remain silent, and afflict us so severely?
[ISA 64:9-11]
Lo, before me it stands written; I will not be quiet until I have paid in full Your crimes and the crimes of your fathers as well, says the LORD.
Since they burned incense on the mountains, and disgraced me on the hills,
I will at once pour out in full measure their recompense into their laps. [ISA
65:6-7]
Listen to the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob! All you clans of the house of Israel, thus says the LORD:
What fault did your fathers find in me that they withdrew from me,
Went after empty idols, and became empty themselves? They did not ask, "Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt,
Who led us through the desert, through a land of wastes and gullies,
Through a land of drought and darkness, through a land which no one crosses, where no man dwells?" When I brought you into the garden land to eat its goodly fruits,
You entered and defiled my land, you made my heritage loathsome.
[JER 2:4-7]
Only if you thoroughly reform your ways and your deeds; if each of you deals justly with his neighbor; if you no longer oppress the resident alien, the orphan, and the widow; if you no longer shed innocent blood in this place, or follow strange gods to your own harm, will I remain with you in this place, in the land which I gave your fathers long ago and forever.
[JER 7:5-7]
This rather is what I commanded them: Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper. But they obeyed not, nor did they pay heed. They walked in the hardness of their evil hearts and turned their backs, not their faces, to me. From the day that your fathers left the land of Egypt even to this day, I have sent you untiringly all my servants the prophets. Yet they have not obeyed me nor paid heed; they have stiffened their necks and done worse than their fathers. When you speak all these words to them, they will not listen to you either; when you call to them, they will not answer you. Say to them: This is the nation which does not listen to the voice of the LORD, its God, or take correction. Faithfulness has disappeared; the word itself is banished from their speech.
[JER 7:23-28]
The following message came to Jeremiah from the LORD: Speak to the men of Judah and to the citizens of Jerusalem, saying to them: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Cursed be the man who does not observe the terms of this covenant, which I enjoined upon your fathers the day I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, that iron foundry, saying: Listen to my voice and do all that I command you. Then you shall be my people, and I will be your God. Thus I will fulfill the oath which I swore to your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey: the one you have today. "Amen, LORD," I answered. Then the LORD said to me: Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: Hear the words of this covenant and obey them. Urgently and constantly I warned your fathers to obey my voice, from the day I brought them up out of the land of Egypt even to this day. But they did not listen or give ear. Each one followed the hardness of his evil heart, till I brought upon them all the threats of this covenant which they had failed to observe as I commanded them. A conspiracy has been found, the LORD said to me, among the men of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem. They have returned to the crimes of their forefathers who refused to obey my words. They also have followed and served strange gods; the covenant which I had made with their fathers, the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken.
[JER 11:1-10]
We recognize, O LORD, our wickedness, the guilt of our fathers; that we have sinned against you. For your name's sake spurn us not, disgrace not the throne of your glory; remember your covenant with us, and break it not.
[JER 14:20-21]
And you have done worse than your fathers. Here you are, every
one of you, walking in the hardness of his evil heart instead of
listening to me. [JER 16:12]
Bring no burden from your homes on the sabbath. Do no work
whatever, but keep holy the sabbath, as I commanded your fathers [JER 17:22]
They departed in tears, but I will console them and guide them;
I will lead them to brooks of water, on a level road, so that none
shall stumble. For I am a father to Israel, Ephraim is my
first-born. [JER 31:9]
The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers the day I took them by the hand to lead them forth from the land of Egypt; for they broke my covenant and I had to show myself their master, says the LORD. But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD. I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer will they have need to teach their friends and kinsmen how to know the LORD. All, from least to greatest, shall know me, says the LORD, for I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sin no more. [JER
31:31-34]
You continue your kindness through a thousand generations; and
you repay the fathers' guilt, even into the lap of their sons who
follow them. O God, great and mighty, whose name is LORD of hosts
[JER 32:18]
Remember, O LORD, what has befallen us, look, and see our
disgrace: Our inherited lands have been turned over to
strangers, our homes to foreigners. Remember, O LORD, what has befallen
us, look, and see our disgrace: Our inherited lands have been turned
over to strangers, our homes to foreigners. We have become
orphans, fatherless; widowed are our mothers. The water we drink
we must buy, for our own wood we must pay. On our necks is the
yoke of those who drive us; we are worn out, but allowed no rest.
To Egypt we submitted, and to Assyria, to fill our need of bread.
Our fathers, who sinned, are no more; but we bear their guilt.
[LAM 5:1-7]
"Remember at this time not the misdeeds of our fathers, but your
own hand and name: for you are the LORD our God; and you, O LORD,
we will praise! For this, you put into our hearts the fear of you:
that we may call upon your name, and praise you in our captivity,
when we have removed from our hearts all the wickedness of our
fathers who sinned against you. Behold us today in our captivity,
where you scattered us, a reproach, a curse, and a requital for
all the misdeeds of our fathers, who withdrew from the LORD, our
God." [BARUCH 3:5-8]
For all lives are mine; the life of the father is like the life
of the son, both are mine; only the one who sins shall die. [EZEK
18:4]
Therefore speak to the house of Israel, son of man, and tell them: Thus says the Lord GOD: In this way also your fathers blasphemed me, breaking faith with me: when I had brought them to the land I had sworn to give them, and they saw all its high hills and leafy trees, there they offered their sacrifices (there they brought their offensive offerings), there they sent up appeasing odors, and there they poured out their libations. I asked them: To what sort of high place do you betake
yourselves? - and so they call it a high place even to the present day. Therefore say to the house of Israel: Thus says the Lord GOD: Will you defile yourselves like your fathers? Will you lust after their detestable idols? By offering your gifts, by making your children pass through the fire, you defile yourselves with all your idols even to this day. Shall I let myself be consulted by you, house of Israel? As I live! says the Lord GOD: I swear I will not let myself be consulted by you. What you are thinking of shall never happen: "We shall be like the nations, like the peoples of foreign lands, serving wood and stone." As I live, says the Lord GOD, with a mighty hand and outstretched arm, with poured-out wrath, I swear I will be king over you! With a mighty hand and outstretched arm, with poured-out wrath, I will bring you out from the nations and gather you from the countries over which you are scattered; then I will lead you to the desert of the peoples, where I will enter into judgment with you face to face. Just as I entered into judgment with your fathers in the desert of the land of Egypt, so will I enter into judgment with you, says the Lord GOD... As a pleasing odor I will accept you, when I have brought you from among the nations and gathered you out of the countries over which you were scattered; and by means of you I will manifest my holiness in the sight of the nations. Thus you shall know that I am the LORD, when I bring you back to the land of Israel, the land which I swore to give to your fathers. There you shall recall your conduct and all the deeds by which you defiled yourselves; and you shall loathe yourselves because of all the evil things you did. And you shall know that I am the LORD when I deal with you thus, for my name's sake, and not according to your evil conduct and corrupt actions, O house of Israel, says the Lord GOD. [EZEK
20:27-42]
Within you, father and mother are despised; in your midst, they
extort from the resident alien; within you, they oppress orphans and widows. What is holy to me you have spurned, and my sabbaths you have desecrated. [EZEK
22:7-8]
The faithful are gone from the earth, among men the upright are no more!
They all lie in wait to shed blood, each one ensnares the other. Put no trust in a friend, have no confidence in a companion;
Against her who lies in your bosom guard the portals of your mouth. For the son dishonors his father, the daughter rises up against her mother,
The daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, and a man's enemies are those of his household. But as for me, I will look to the LORD, I will put my trust in God my savior; my God will hear me! [MICAH 7:2,5-7]
Be not like your fathers whom the former prophets warned: Thus says the LORD of hosts: Turn from your evil ways and from your wicked deeds. But they would not listen or pay attention to me, says the LORD. Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, can they live forever? But my words and my decrees, which I entrusted to my servants the prophets, did not these overtake your fathers? Then they repented and admitted: "The LORD of hosts has treated us according to our ways and deeds, just as he had determined he would." [ZECH
1:4-6]
A son honors his father, and a servant fears his master; If then I am a father, where is the honor due to me?
And if I am a master, where is the reverence due to me? - So says the LORD of hosts to you, O priests, who despise his name.
But you ask, "How have we despised your name?" By offering polluted food on my altar!
Then you ask, "How have we polluted it?" By saying the table of the LORD may be slighted! [MAL
1:6-7]
Have we not all the one Father? Has not the one God created us?
Why then do we break faith with each other, violating the covenant
of our fathers? [MAL 2:10]
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers...
Eliud the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah. Thus the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah, fourteen
generations. [MT
1:1-2,15-17]
When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism,
[John] said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones."
[Taken from MT 3:7-9]
He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James,
the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat,
with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. [Jesus] called them,
and immediately they left their boat and their father and
followed him. [Taken MT 4:21-22]
Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see
your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father. [MT 5:16]
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors
do the same? And if you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the
same? So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect." [MT
5:43-48]
"(But) take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites
do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you." [MT
6:1-4]
"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him." [MT
6:5-8]
"This is how you are to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your
name, your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and do not subject us to the final test, but deliver us from the evil one. If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions." [MT
6:9-15]
"When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you." [MT
6:16-18]
Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they
gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are not you more important than they? [MT 6:26]
So do not worry and say, 'What are we to eat?' or 'What are we to drink?' or 'What are we to wear?' All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom (of God) and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given you besides. [MT
6:31-33]
If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to
your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good
things to those who ask him. [MT 7:11]
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the
kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father
in heaven." [MT 7:21]
Another of (his) disciples said to him, "Lord, let me go first and bury my father." But Jesus answered him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead." [MT
8:21-22]
"Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves. But beware of people, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will hand over brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end
will be saved." [MT
10:16-22]
Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly
Father. [MT
10:29-33]
"Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. For I have come to set
a man 'against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one's enemies will be those of his household.'" [MT
10:34-36]
"Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross
and follow after me is not worthy of me." [MT
10:37-38]
At that time Jesus said in reply, "I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him."
[MT 11:25-27]
"For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother,
and sister, and mother." [MT 12:50]
Then, dismissing the crowds, he went into the house. His disciples approached him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field." He said in reply, "He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world,
the good seed the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age,
and the harvesters are angels. Just as weeds are collected and burned (up) with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom
all who cause others to sin and all evildoers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears ought to hear."
[MT
13:36-43]
"For God said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever curses father or mother shall die.' But you say, 'Whoever says to father or mother, "Any support you might have had from me is dedicated to God," need not honor his father.' You have nullified the word of God for the sake of your tradition. Hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy about you when he said: 'This people honors me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.'" He summoned the crowd and said to them, "Hear and understand. It is not what enters one's mouth that defiles that person; but what comes out of the mouth is what defiles one." Then his disciples approached and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?" He said in reply,
"Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone; they are blind guides (of the blind). If a blind person leads a blind person, both will fall into a pit." [MT
15:4-14]
When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist,
others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood
has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." [MT
16:13-19]
For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father's
glory, and then he will repay everyone according to his conduct.
[MT 16:27]
"See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for
I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face
of my heavenly Father." [MT 18:10]
What is your opinion? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray? And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not stray. In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost. [MT
18:12-14]
Again, (amen,) I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about
anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them
by my heavenly Father. [MT 18:19]
"His master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to. Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?'
Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole
debt. So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives his brother from his heart." [MT
18:32-35]
Some Pharisees approached him, and tested him, saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?" He said in reply, "Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must
separate." [MT
19:3-6]
Now someone approached him and said, "Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?" He answered him, "Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good.
If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments." He asked him, "Which ones?" And Jesus replied, " 'You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother'; and 'you shall love your neighbor as yourself.'" The young man said to him, "All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect,
go, sell what you have and give to (the) poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
[MT 19:16-21]
And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or
father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will
receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life. [MT
19:29]
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached him with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something. He said to her, "What do you wish?" She answered him, "Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom." Jesus said in reply, "You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?" They said to him, "We can." He replied, "My cup you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left (, this) is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." [MT
20:20-23]
"What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, 'Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.' He said in reply, 'I will not,' but afterwards he changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, 'Yes, sir,' but did not go. Which of the two did his father's will?" They answered, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him." [MT
21:28-32]
Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in
heaven. [MT 23:9]
"But of that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the
Son, but the Father alone. For as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man." [MT
24:36-37]
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations
will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous
will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?' And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.' Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.' Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?' He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.' And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." [MT
25:34-46]
"I tell you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the
vine until the day when I drink it with you new in the kingdom of
my Father." [MT 26:29]
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." He took along Peter and the two sons of
Zebedee, and began to feel sorrow and distress. Then he said to them, "My soul is sorrowful even to death.
Remain here and keep watch with me." He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, "My Father,
if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will." When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, "So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test.
The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again, "My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my drinking it, your will be done!" Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open. He left them and withdrew again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing again. Then he returned to his disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is at hand." [MT
26:36-46]
And behold, one of those who accompanied Jesus put his hand to his sword, drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear. Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its sheath, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot call upon my Father and he will not provide me at this moment with more than twelve legions of angels? But then how would the scriptures be fulfilled which say that it must come to pass in this way?"
[MT 26:51-54]
Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore,
and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age." [MT
28:18-20]
He went on to say, "How well you have set aside the commandment of God in order to uphold your tradition! For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever curses father or mother shall die.' Yet you say, 'If a person says to father or mother, "Any support you might have had from me is
qorban"' (meaning, dedicated to God), you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother. You nullify the word of God in favor of your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many such things." [MK
7:9-13]
"Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and
sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes
in his Father's glory with the holy angels." [MK 8:38]
The Pharisees approached and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted him to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother (and be joined to his wife), and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." [MK
10:2-9]
As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good?
No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.'" He replied and said to him, "Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth." Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, "You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to (the) poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow
me." [MK
10:17-21]
Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come."
[MK 10:29-30]
"Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come!
Hosanna in the highest!" [MK 11:10]
When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a
grievance, so that your heavenly Father may in turn forgive you
your transgressions." [MK 11:25]
Brother will hand over brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. [MK
13:12-13]
"But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come." [MK
13:32-33]
Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be troubled and distressed. Then he said to them, "My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch." He advanced a little and fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour might pass by him; he said, "Abba, Father,
all things are possible to you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I will but what you will." When he returned he found them asleep. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." Withdrawing again, he prayed, saying the same thing. [MK
14:32-39]
Zechariah was troubled by what he saw, and fear came upon him. But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid,
Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of (the) Lord. He will drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the
Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb, and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of fathers toward children and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to prepare a people fit for the Lord."
[LK 1:12-17]
Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end."
[LK 1:30-33]
And Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him. He has shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy, according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever."
[LK 1:46-55]
Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, and when he was twelve years old, they went up according to festival custom. After they had completed its days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Thinking that he was in the caravan, they journeyed for a day and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances, but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety." And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's
house?" But they did not understand what he said to them. He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart.
[LK 2:41-51]
He said to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce good fruits as evidence of your repentance; and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father,' for I tell you, God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones."
[LK 3:7-8]
Be merciful, just as (also) your Father is merciful. [LK 6:36]
Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will
be ashamed of when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the
Father and of the holy angels. [LK 9:26]
And to another he said, "Follow me." But he replied, "(Lord,) let me go first and bury my father." But he answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead.
But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
[LK 9:59-60]
At that very moment he rejoiced (in) the Holy Spirit and said,
"I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for
although you have hidden these things from the wise and the
learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such
has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one
knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is
except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal
him." [LK 10:21-22]
He said to them, "When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily
bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test."
[LK 11:2-4]
"And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the
Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"
[LK 11:9-13]
As for you, do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not worry anymore. All the nations of the world seek for these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these other things will be given you besides. Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.
[LK 12:29-34]
"From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."
[LK 12:52-53]
"If any one comes to me without hating his father and
mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own
life, he cannot be my disciple." [LK 14:26]
Then he said, "A man had two sons, and the younger son
said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of your estate that
should come to me.' So the father divided the property between
them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his
belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered
his inheritance on a life of dissipation. When he had freely spent
everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found
himself in dire need. Coming to his senses he thought, 'How many
of my father's hired workers have more than enough food to eat,
but here am I, dying from hunger. I shall get up and go to my
father and I shall say to him, "Father, I have sinned against
heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son;
treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers."' So
he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long
way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with
compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His
son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against
you; I no longer deserve to be called your son. But his father
ordered his servants, 'Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on
him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet...Then let
us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and
has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.' Then the
celebration began. Now the older son had been out in the field
and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound
of music and dancing. He became angry, and when he refused to
enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. He said
to him, 'My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is
yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother
was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been
found.'" [Taken from LK 15:11-14, 17-25, 28, 31-32]
"There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the
bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld,
where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.' Abraham replied, 'My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.' He said, 'Then I beg you, father, send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.' But Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.' He said, 'Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.' Then Abraham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.'"
[LK 16:19-31]
An official asked him this question, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments, 'You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother.'" And he replied, "All of these I have observed from my youth." When Jesus heard this he said to him, "There is still one thing left for you: sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
