              Note:
This section is limited to references to "Son of Man"
and "Son of God" contained in the New Testament (as well
as direct testimony from the Father that Jesus is His Son).

               | After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water
and behold, the heavens were opened (for him), and he saw the
Spirit of God descending like a dove (and) coming upon him. And a
voice came from the heavens, saying, "This is my beloved Son,
with whom I am well pleased." [MT 3:16-17] Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert
to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty
nights, and afterwards he was hungry. The tempter approached and
said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command that these
stones become loaves of bread." He said in reply, "It is
written: 'One does not live by bread alone, but by every
word that comes forth from the mouth of God.'" Then the devil
took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the parapet of
the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God,
throw yourself down. For it is written: 'He will command
his angels concerning you and 'with their hands they will
support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"
Jesus answered him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not put
the Lord, your God, to the test.'" Then the devil took him up
to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the
world in their magnificence, and he said to him, "All these I
shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship
me." At this, Jesus said to him, "Get away, Satan! It
is written: 'The Lord, your God, shall you
worship and him alone shall you serve.'" Then the devil
left him and, behold, angels came and ministered to him.
[MT 4:1-11] Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and
birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to
rest his head." [MT 8:20] When he came to the other side, to the territory of the
Gadarenes, two demoniacs who were coming from the tombs met him. They were so savage that no one could travel by that road. They cried out, "What have you to do with us,
Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the appointed time?"
[Taken from MT 8:28-29] He entered a boat, made the crossing, and came
into his own town. And there people brought to him a paralytic
lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the
paralytic, "Courage, child, your sins are forgiven." At
that, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is
blaspheming." Jesus knew what they were thinking, and said,
"Why do you harbor evil thoughts? Which is easier, to say,
'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise and walk'? But that you
may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive
sins" - he then said to the paralytic, "Rise, pick up
your stretcher, and go home." He rose and went home. When the
crowds saw this they were struck with awe and glorified God who
had given such authority to human beings. [MT 9:1-8] Brother will hand over brother to death, and the
father his child; children will rise up against parents and have
them put to death. You will be hated by all because of my name,
but whoever endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute
you in one town, flee to another. Amen, I say to you, you will not
finish the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. No
disciple is above his teacher, no slave above his master. It is
enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, for the
slave that he become like his master. If they have called the
master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his
household! [MT 10:21-25] "To what shall I compare this generation?
It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one
another, 'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we
sang a dirge but you did not mourn.' For John came neither eating
nor drinking, and they said, 'He is possessed by a demon.' The Son
of Man came eating and drinking and they said, 'Look, he is a
glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.'
But wisdom is vindicated by her works." [MT 11:16-19] At that time Jesus was going through a field of
grain on the sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick
the heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they
said to him, "See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful
to do on the sabbath." He said to them, "Have you not
read what David did when he and his companions were hungry, how he
went into the house of God and ate the bread of offering, which
neither he nor his companions but only the priests could lawfully
eat? Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the
priests serving in the temple violate the sabbath and are
innocent? I say to you, something greater than the temple is here.
If you knew what this meant, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you
would not have condemned these innocent men. For the Son of Man is
Lord of the sabbath." [MT 12:1-8] Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy
will be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not
be forgiven. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will
be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not
be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. [MT 12:31-32] Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to
him, "Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you." He said
to them in reply, "An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a
sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the
prophet. Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days
and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the
earth three days and three nights." [MT 12:38-40] Then, dismissing the crowds, he went into the
house. His disciples approached him and said, "Explain to us
the parable of the weeds in the field." He said in reply,
"He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the
world, the good seed the children of the kingdom. The weeds are
the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the
devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are
angels. Just as weeds are collected and burned (up) with fire, so
will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his
angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all who cause
others to sin and all evildoers. They will throw them into the
fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their
Father. Whoever has ears ought to hear." [MT 13:36-43] During the fourth watch of the night, he came
toward them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him
walking on the sea they were terrified. "It is a ghost,"
they said, and they cried out in fear. At once (Jesus) spoke to
them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." Peter
said to him in reply, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come
to you on the water." He said, "Come." Peter got
out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But
when he saw how (strong) the wind was he became frightened; and,
beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"
Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said
to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"
After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were
in the boat did him homage, saying, "Truly, you are the Son
              of God."
[MT 14:25-33] When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea
Philippi he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the
Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the
Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the
prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I
am?" Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Messiah,
the Son of the living God." Jesus said to him in reply,
"Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has
not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to
you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and
the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will
give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on
earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth
shall be loosed in heaven." Then he strictly ordered his
disciples to tell no one that he was the Messiah. [MT 16:13-20] Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any man
will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross,
and follow me. For he that will save his life, shall lose it: and
he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall find it. For what
doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and suffer the
loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his
soul? For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father
with his angels: and then will he render to every man according to
his works. Amen I say to you, there are some of them that stand
here, that shall not taste death, till they see the Son of man
coming in his kingdom. [MT 16:24-28]
After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John
his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he
was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his
clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah
appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in
reply, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I
will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one
for Elijah." While he was still speaking, behold, a bright
cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice
that said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well
pleased; listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they
fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and
touched them, saying, "Rise, and do not be afraid." And
when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but
Jesus alone. [MT 17:1-8] As they were coming down from the mountain,
Jesus charged them, "Do not tell the vision to anyone until
the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." Then the
disciples asked him, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must
come first?" He said in reply, "Elijah will indeed come
and restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already
come, and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they
pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands."
Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John
the Baptist. [MT 17:9-13] As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is to be handed over to men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day." And they were overwhelmed with grief.
[MT 17:22-23] Then Peter said to him in reply, "We have
given up everything and followed you. What will there be for
us?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you that you
who have followed me, in the new age, when the Son of Man is
seated on his throne of glory, will yourselves sit on twelve
thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has
given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or
children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred
times more, and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first
will be last, and the last will be first." [MT 19:27-30] As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the
twelve (disciples) aside by themselves, and said to them on the
way, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of
Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and
they will condemn him to death, and hand him over to the Gentiles
to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and he will be raised on
the third day." [MT 20:17-19] Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee
approached him with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask
him for something. He said to her, "What do you wish?"
She answered him, "Command that these two sons of mine sit,
one at your right and the other at your left, in your
kingdom." Jesus said in reply, "You do not know what you
are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?"
They said to him, "We can." He replied, "My cup you
will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left (, this)
is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared
by my Father." When the ten heard this, they became indignant
at the two brothers. But Jesus summoned them and said, "You
know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the
great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not
be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you
shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall
be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served
but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." [MT
20:20-28] If anyone says to you then, 'Look, here is the
Messiah!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. False messiahs and
false prophets will arise, and they will perform signs and wonders
so great as to deceive, if that were possible, even the elect.
Behold, I have told it to you beforehand. So if they say to you,
'He is in the desert,' do not go out there; if they say, 'He is in
the inner rooms,' do not believe it. For just as lightning comes
from the east and is seen as far as the west, so will the coming
of the Son of Man be. [MT 24:23-27] "Immediately after the tribulation of those
days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its
light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the
heavens will be shaken. And then the sign of the Son of Man will
appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and
they will see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of heaven with
power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a
trumpet blast, and they will gather his elect from the four winds,
from one end of the heavens to the other." [MT 24:29-31] "But of that day and hour no one knows,
neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.
For as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of
the Son of Man. In (those) days before the flood, they were eating
and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that
Noah entered the ark. They did not know until the flood came and
carried them all away. So will it be (also) at the coming of the
Son of Man [that is, some will be taken to the kingdom, the others
will be left to perish]. Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken,
and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one
will be taken, and one will be left. Therefore, stay awake! For
you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this:
if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the
thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house
be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour
you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." [Taken from MT 24:36-44]  "When the Son of Man comes in his glory,
and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne,
and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will
separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep
from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats
on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come,
you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for
you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you
gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and
you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for
me, in prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous will answer
him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or
thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and
welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or
in prison, and visit you?' And the king will say to them in reply,
'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least
brothers of mine, you did for me.' Then he will say to those on
his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire
prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you
gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a
stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no
clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.' Then
they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or
thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not
minister to your needs?' He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you,
what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do
for me.' And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the
righteous to eternal life." [MT 25:31-46] When Jesus finished all these words, he said to his disciples,
"You know that in two days' time it will be Passover, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified." [MT
26:1-2] When it was evening, he reclined at table with
the Twelve. And while they were eating, he said, "Amen, I say
to you, one of you will betray me." Deeply distressed at
this, they began to say to him one after another, "Surely it
is not I, Lord?" He said in reply, "He who has dipped
his hand into the dish with me is the one who will betray me. The
Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that
man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for
that man if he had never been born." Then Judas, his
betrayer, said in reply, "Surely it is not I, Rabbi?" He
answered, "You have said so." [MT 26:20-25] Then Jesus came with them to a place called
Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I
go over there and pray." He took along Peter and the two sons
of Zebedee, and began to feel sorrow and distress. Then he said to
them, "My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and
keep watch with me." He advanced a little and fell prostrate
in prayer, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this
cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will." When
he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to
Peter, "So you could not keep watch with me for one hour?
Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is
willing, but the flesh is weak." Withdrawing a second time,
he prayed again, "My Father, if it is not possible that this
cup pass without my drinking it, your will be done!" Then he
returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep
their eyes open. He left them and withdrew again and prayed a
third time, saying the same thing again. Then he returned to his
disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and
taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man
is to be handed over to sinners. Get up, let us go. Look, my
betrayer is at hand." [MT 26:36-46] The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin kept
trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus in order to put him
to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came
forward. Finally two came forward who stated, "This man said,
'I can destroy the temple of God and within three days rebuild
it.'" The high priest rose and addressed him, "Have you
no answer? What are these men testifying against you?" But
Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, "I order
you to tell us under oath before the living God whether you are
the Messiah, the Son of God." Jesus said to him in reply,
"You have said so. But I tell you: From now on you will see
'the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power' and 'coming
on the clouds of heaven.'" Then the high priest tore his
robes and said, "He has blasphemed! What further need have we
of witnesses? You have now heard the blasphemy; what is your
opinion?" They said in reply, "He deserves to die!"
Then they spat in his face and struck him, while some slapped him,
saying, "Prophesy for us, Messiah: who is it that struck
you?" [MT 26:59-68] And when they came to a place called Golgotha
(which means Place of the Skull), they gave Jesus wine to drink
mixed with gall. But when he had tasted it, he refused to drink.
After they had crucified him, they divided his garments by casting
lots; then they sat down and kept watch over him there. And they
placed over his head the written charge against him: This is
Jesus, the King of the Jews. Two revolutionaries were crucified
with him, one on his right and the other on his left. Those
passing by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, "You
who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save
yourself, if you are the Son of God, (and) come down from the
cross!" Likewise the chief priests with the scribes and
elders mocked him and said, "He saved others; he cannot save
himself. So he is the king of Israel! Let him come down from the
cross now, and we will believe in him. He trusted in God; let him
deliver him now if he wants him. For he said, 'I am the Son of
God.'" The revolutionaries who were crucified with him also
kept abusing him in the same way. [MT 27:33-44] But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and
gave up his spirit. And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn
in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, rocks were split,
tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen
asleep were raised. And coming forth from their tombs after his
resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many. The
centurion and the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus
feared greatly when they saw the earthquake and all that was
happening, and they said, "Truly, this was the Son of
              God!"
[MT 27:50-54] The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ (the
Son of God). [MK 1:1] It happened in those days that Jesus came from
Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On
coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and
the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came
from the heavens, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well
pleased." [MK 1:9-11] When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some
days, it became known that he was at home. Many gathered together
so that there was no longer room for them, not even around the
door, and he preached the word to them. They came bringing to him
a paralytic carried by four men. Unable to get near Jesus because
of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him. After they had
broken through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was
lying. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic,
"Child, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes
were sitting there asking themselves, "Why does this man
speak that way? He is blaspheming. Who but God alone can forgive
sins?" Jesus immediately knew in his mind what they were
thinking to themselves, so he said, "Why are you thinking
such things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the
paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, pick up
your mat and walk'? But that you may know that the Son of Man has
authority to forgive sins on earth" - he said to the
paralytic, "I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go
home." He rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away in
the sight of everyone. They were all astounded and glorified God,
saying, "We have never seen anything like this." [MK 2:1-12] As he was passing through a field of grain on
the sabbath, his disciples began to make a path while picking the
heads of grain. At this the Pharisees said to him, "Look, why
are they doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?" He said to
them, "Have you never read what David did when he was in need
and he and his companions were hungry? How he went into the house
of God when Abiathar was high priest and ate the bread of offering
that only the priests could lawfully eat, and shared it with his
companions?" Then he said to them, "The sabbath was made
for man, not man for the sabbath. That is why the Son of Man is
lord even of the sabbath." [MK 2:23-28] Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his
disciples. A large number of people (followed) from Galilee and
from Judea. Hearing what he was doing, a large number of people
came to him also from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from beyond the
Jordan, and from the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon. He told his
disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so
that they would not crush him. He had cured many and, as a result,
those who had diseases were pressing upon him to touch him. And
whenever unclean spirits saw him they would fall down before him
and shout, "You are the Son of God." He warned them
sternly not to make him known. [MK 3:7-12] He began to teach them that the Son of Man must
suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests,
and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. [MK
8:31] And calling the multitude together with his
disciples, [Jesus] said to them: If any man will follow me, let
him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For
whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever shall
lose his life for my sake and the gospel shall save it. For what
shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and suffer the
loss of his soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his
soul: For he that shall be ashamed of me and of my words, in this
adulterous and sinful generation: the Son of man also will be
ashamed of him, when he shall come in the glory of his Father with
the holy angels. [MK 8:34-38] After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John
and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was
transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white,
such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared
to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus.
Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Rabbi, it is good that we
are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and
one for Elijah." He hardly knew what to say, they were so
terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; then
from the cloud came a voice, "This is my beloved Son. Listen
to him." Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone
but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the
mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to
anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So
they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from
the dead meant. Then they asked him, "Why do the scribes say
that Elijah must come first?" He told them, "Elijah will
indeed come first and restore all things, yet how is it written
regarding the Son of Man that he must suffer greatly and be
treated with contempt? But I tell you that Elijah has come and
they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of
him." [MK 9:2-13] He was teaching his disciples and telling them, "The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death he will rise." But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him.
[MK 9:31-32] They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem, and
Jesus went ahead of them. They were amazed, and those who followed
were afraid. Taking the Twelve aside again, he began to tell them
what was going to happen to him. "Behold, we are going up to
Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief
priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and
hand him over to the Gentiles who will mock him, spit upon him,
scourge him, and put him to death, but after three days he will
rise." [MK 10:32-34] Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came
to him and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us
whatever we ask of you." He replied, "What do you wish
(me) to do for you?" They answered him, "Grant that in
your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your
left." Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are
asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the
baptism with which I am baptized?" They said to him, "We
can." Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink, you
will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you
will be baptized; but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine
to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared." When
the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. Jesus
summoned them and said to them, "You know that those who are
recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and
their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall
not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you
will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be
the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but
to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." [MK 10:35-45] "For those times will have tribulation such as
has not been since the beginning of God's creation until now, nor
ever will be. If the Lord had not shortened those days, no one
would be saved; but for the sake of the elect whom he chose, he
did shorten the days. If anyone says to you then, 'Look, here is
the Messiah! Look, there he is!' do not believe it. False messiahs
and false prophets will arise and will perform signs and wonders
in order to mislead, if that were possible, the elect. Be
watchful! I have told it all to you beforehand. But in those
days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon
will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the
sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they
will see 'the Son of Man coming in the clouds' with great power
and glory, and then he will send out the angels and gather (his)
elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of
the sky." [MK 13:19-27] When it was evening, he came with the Twelve.
And as they reclined at table and were eating, Jesus said,
"Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is
eating with me." They began to be distressed and to say to
him, one by one, "Surely it is not I?" He said to them,
"One of the Twelve, the one who dips with me into the dish.
For the Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe
to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better
for that man if he had never been born." [MK 14:17-21] Then they came to a place named Gethsemane, and
he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." He
took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be troubled and
distressed. Then he said to them, "My soul is sorrowful even
to death. Remain here and keep watch." He advanced a little
and fell to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the
hour might pass by him; he said, "Abba, Father, all things
are possible to you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I
will but what you will." When he returned he found them
asleep. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you
not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray that you may not
undergo the test. The spirit is willing but the flesh is
weak." Withdrawing again, he prayed, saying the same thing.
Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could
not keep their eyes open and did not know what to answer him. He
returned a third time and said to them, "Are you still
sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough. The hour has come.
Behold, the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. Get up,
let us go. See, my betrayer is at hand." [MK 14:32-42] The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin kept
trying to obtain testimony against Jesus in order to put him to
death, but they found none. Many gave false witness against him,
but their testimony did not agree. Some took the stand and
testified falsely against him, alleging, "We heard him say,
'I will destroy this temple made with hands and within three days
I will build another not made with hands.'" Even so their
testimony did not agree. The high priest rose before the assembly
and questioned Jesus, saying, "Have you no answer? What are
these men testifying against you?" But he was silent and
answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him and said to him,
"Are you the Messiah, the son of the Blessed One?" Then
Jesus answered, "I am; and 'you will see the Son of Man
seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds
of heaven.'" At that the high priest tore his garments and
said, "What further need have we of witnesses? You have heard
the blasphemy. What do you think?" They all condemned him as
deserving to die. Some began to spit on him. They blindfolded him
and struck him and said to him, "Prophesy!" And the
guards greeted him with blows. [MK 14:55-65] Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. The
veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. When the
centurion who stood facing him saw how he breathed his last he
said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" [MK 15:37-39] And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was
sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, To a virgin
              espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David;
and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel being come in, said
unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art
thou among women. Who having heard, was troubled at his saying,
and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.
And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found
grace with God. Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt
bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be
great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord
God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he
shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever. And of his kingdom
there shall be no end. And Mary said to the angel: How shall this
be done, because I know not man? And the angel answering, said to
her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the
most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which
shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And behold
thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old
age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren:
Because no word shall be impossible with God. And Mary said:
Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy
word. And the angel departed from her. [LK 1:26-38] After all the people had been baptized and Jesus
also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit
descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came
from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well
pleased." [LK 3:21-22] Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from
the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty
days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those
days, and when they were over he was hungry. The devil said to
him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become
bread." Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does
not live by bread alone.'" Then he took him up and showed him
all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant. The devil said
              to him, "I shall give to you all this power and their glory;
for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I
wish. All this will be yours, if you worship me." Jesus said
to him in reply, "It is written: 'You shall worship the Lord,
your God, and him alone shall you serve.'" Then he led him to
Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said
to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from
here, for it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning
you, to guard you,' and: 'With their hands they will support you,
lest you dash your foot against a stone.'" Jesus said to him
in reply, "It also says, 'You shall not put the Lord, your
God, to the test.'" When the devil had finished every
temptation, he departed from him for a time. [LK 4:1-13] At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them. And demons also came out from many, shouting, "You are the Son of God." But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Messiah.
[LK 4:40-41] One day as Jesus was teaching, Pharisees and
teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every
village of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem, and the power of the
Lord was with him for healing. And some men brought on a stretcher
a man who was paralyzed; they were trying to bring him in and set
(him) in his presence. But not finding a way to bring him in
because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on
the stretcher through the tiles into the middle in front of Jesus.
When he saw their faith, he said, "As for you, your sins are
forgiven." Then the scribes and Pharisees began to ask
themselves, "Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who but God
alone can forgive sins?" Jesus knew their thoughts and said
to them in reply, "What are you thinking in your hearts?
Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say,
'Rise and walk'? But that you may know that the Son of Man has
authority on earth to forgive sins" - he said to the man who was
paralyzed, "I say to you, rise, pick up your stretcher, and
go home." He stood up immediately before them, picked up what
he had been lying on, and went home, glorifying God. Then
astonishment seized them all and they glorified God, and, struck
with awe, they said, "We have seen incredible things
today." [LK 5:17-26] While he was going through a field of grain on a
sabbath, his disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing
them in their hands, and eating them. Some Pharisees said,
"Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?"
Jesus said to them in reply, "Have you not read what David
did when he and those (who were) with him were hungry? (How) he
went into the house of God, took the bread of offering, which only
the priests could lawfully eat, ate of it, and shared it with his
companions." Then he said to them, "The Son of Man is
lord of the sabbath." [LK 6:1-5] Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward
will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way.
[LK 6:22-23] "Then to what shall I compare the people of
this generation? What are they like? They are like children who
sit in the marketplace and call to one another, 'We played the
flute for you, but you did not dance. We sang a dirge, but you did
not weep.' For John the Baptist came neither eating food nor
drinking wine, and you said, 'He is possessed by a demon.' The Son
of Man came eating and drinking and you said, 'Look, he is a
glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.'
But wisdom is vindicated by all her children." [LK 7:31-35] He said, "The Son of Man must suffer
greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the
scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised." Then he said to all, "If anyone wishes to
come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily
and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit
is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit
himself? Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man
will be ashamed of when he comes in his glory and in the glory of
the Father and of the holy angels. Truly I say to you, there are
some standing here who will not taste death until they see the
kingdom of God." [LK 9:22-27] About eight days after he said this, he took
Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray. While he
was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became
dazzling white. And behold, two men were conversing with him,
Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus
that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and his
companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake,
they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As they were
about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is
good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one
for Moses, and one for Elijah." But he did not know what he
was saying. While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a
shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the
cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is
my chosen Son; listen to him." After the voice had spoken,
Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time
tell anyone what they had seen. [LK 9:28-36] And all were astonished by the majesty of God.
While they were all amazed at his every deed, he said to his
disciples, "Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son
of Man is to be handed over to men." But they did not
understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them so that
they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him
about this saying. [LK 9:43-45] Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and
birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to
rest his head." [LK 9:58] While still more people gathered in the crowd,
he said to them, "This generation is an evil generation; it
seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of
Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the
Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment the queen of the
south will rise with the men of this generation and she will
condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear
the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon
here. At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this
generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they
repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here." [LK 11:29-32] I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God.
But whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.
[LK 12:8-9] "Everyone who speaks a word against the Son
of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit
will not be forgiven." [LK 12:10] "Gird your loins and light your lamps and
be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding,
ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are
those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.
Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at
table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the
second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed
are those servants. Be sure of this: if the master of the house
had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have
let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an
hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." Then Peter
said, "Lord, is this parable meant for us or for
everyone?" And the Lord replied, "Who, then, is the
faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of
his servants to distribute (the) food allowance at the proper
time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds
doing so. Truly, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all
his property. But if that servant says to himself, 'My master is
delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the
maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk, then that servant's
master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and
will punish him severely and assign him a place with the
unfaithful. That servant who knew his master's will but did not
make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten
severely; and the servant who was ignorant of his master's will
but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten
only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with
much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with
more." [LK 12:35-48] Then he said to his disciples, "The days
will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of
Man, but you will not see it. There will be those who will say to
you, 'Look, there he is,' (or) 'Look, here he is.' Do not go off,
do not run in pursuit. For just as lightning flashes and lights up
the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be (in
his day). But first he must suffer greatly and be rejected by this
generation. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the
days of the Son of Man; they were eating and drinking, marrying
and giving in marriage up to the day that Noah entered the ark,
and the flood came and destroyed them all. Similarly, as it was in
the days of Lot: they were eating, drinking, buying, selling,
planting, building; on the day when Lot left Sodom, fire and
brimstone rained from the sky to destroy them all. So it will be
on the day the Son of Man is revealed. On that day, a person who
is on the housetop and whose belongings are in the house must not
go down to get them, and likewise a person in the field must not
return to what was left behind. Remember the wife of Lot. Whoever
seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will
save it. I tell you, on that night there will be two people in one
bed; one will be taken, the other left [that is, to perish]. And there will be two
women grinding meal together; one will be taken, the other left
[that is, to perish]." [Taken from LK 17:22-35] [Note: Explanatory
text has been provided in brackets. Despite current notions to the
contrary among some anti-Catholic sects, Jesus has only promised a
Second Coming. Therefore, those not taken must be left to perish.] "Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them?
I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"
[LK 18:7-8] Then he took the Twelve aside and said to them,
"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem and everything written
by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. He will be
handed over to the Gentiles and he will be mocked and insulted and
spat upon; and after they have scourged him they will kill him,
but on the third day he will rise." But they understood
nothing of this; the word remained hidden from them and they
failed to comprehend what he said. [LK 18:31-34] He came to Jericho and intended to pass through
the town. Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax
collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus
was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was
short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in
order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When he
reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus,
come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house." And
he came down quickly and received him with joy. When they all saw
this, they began to grumble, saying, "He has gone to stay at
the house of a sinner." But Zacchaeus stood there and said to
the Lord, "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give
to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall
repay it four times over." And Jesus said to him, "Today
salvation has come to this house because this man too is a
descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to
save what was lost." [LK 19:1-10] "There will be signs in the sun, the moon,
and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed
by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will die of fright
in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers
of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of
Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these
signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because
your redemption is at hand." [LK 21:25-28] "Beware that your hearts do not become
drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily
life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day
will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth. Be
vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to
escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the
Son of Man." [LK 21:34-36] "And yet behold, the hand of the one who is to betray me is with me on the table; for the Son of Man indeed goes as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed." And they began to debate among themselves who among them would do such a deed.
[LK 22:21-23] While he was still speaking, a crowd approached and in front was one of the Twelve, a man named Judas. He went up to Jesus to kiss him. Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
[LK 22:47-48] When day came the council of elders of the
people met, both chief priests and scribes, and they brought him
before their Sanhedrin. They said, "If you are the Messiah,
tell us," but he replied to them, "If I tell you, you
will not believe, and if I question, you will not respond. But
from this time on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand
of the power of God." They all asked, "Are you then the
Son of God?" He replied to them, "You say that I
am." Then they said, "What further need have we for
testimony? We have heard it from his own mouth." [LK 22:66-71] But at daybreak on the first day of the week
they took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They
found the stone rolled away from the tomb; but when they entered,
they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were
puzzling over this, behold, two men in dazzling garments appeared
to them. They were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground.
They said to them, "Why do you seek the living one among the
dead? He is not here, but he has been raised. Remember what he
said to you while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man
must be handed over to sinners and be crucified, and rise on the
third day." And they remembered his words. Then they returned
from the tomb and announced all these things to the eleven and to
all the others. [LK 24:1-9] The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and
said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the
world. He is the one of whom I said, 'A man is coming after me who
ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.' I did not know
him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he
might be made known to Israel." John testified further,
saying, "I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky
and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me
to baptize with water told me, 'On whomever you see the Spirit
come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'
Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God." [JN
1:29-34] Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We
have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the
prophets, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth." But Nathanael
said to him, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?"
Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael
coming toward him and said of him, "Here is a true Israelite.
There is no duplicity in him." Nathanael said to him,
"How do you know me?" Jesus answered and said to him,
"Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig
tree." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son
of God; you are the King of Israel." Jesus answered and said
to him, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you
under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this."
And he said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see
the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on
the Son of Man." [JN 1:45-51] Jesus answered and said to him, "You are
the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this? Amen, amen,
I say to you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we
have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony. If I tell
you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you
believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has gone up to
heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of
Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so
must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in
him may have eternal life." For God so loved the world that
he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might
not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his
Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might
be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be
condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been
condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son
of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the
world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works
were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and
does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be
exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that
his works may be clearly seen as done in God. [JN 3:10-21] Jesus answered and said to them, "Amen,
amen, I say to you, a son cannot do anything on his own, but only
what he sees his father doing; for what he does, his son will do
also. For the Father loves his Son and shows him everything that
he himself does, and he will show him greater works than these, so
that you may be amazed. For just as the Father raises the dead and
gives life, so also does the Son give life to whomever he wishes.
Nor does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to
his Son, so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the
Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father
who sent him. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and
believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not come
to condemnation, but has passed from death to life. Amen, amen, I
say to you, the hour is coming and is now here when the dead will
hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to his
Son the possession of life in himself. And he gave him power to
exercise judgment, because he is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed
at this, because the hour is coming in which all who are in the
tombs will hear his voice and will come out, those who have done
good deeds to the resurrection of life, but those who have done
wicked deeds to the resurrection of condemnation. I cannot
do anything on my own; I judge as I hear, and my judgment is just,
because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent
me." [JN 5:19-30] When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his
disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to
Capernaum looking for Jesus. And when they found him across the
sea they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"
Jesus answered them and said, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you
are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate
the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but
for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man
will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal."
So they said to him, "What can we do to accomplish the works
of God?" Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the
work of God, that you believe in the one he sent." [JN 6:24-29]  Jesus answered and said to them, "Stop
murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the
Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day.
It is written in the prophets: 'They shall all be taught by God.'
Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me.
Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from
God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever
believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors
ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that
comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am
the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this
bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my
flesh for the life of the world." The Jews quarreled among
themselves, saying, "How can this man give us (his) flesh to
eat?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you,
unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks
my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever
eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just
as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the
Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of
me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your
ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will
live forever." These things he said while teaching in the
synagogue in Capernaum. Then many of his disciples who were
listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept
it?" Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about
this, he said to them, "Does this shock you? What if you were
to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the
spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words
I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of
you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the
ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And
he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can
come to me unless it is granted him by my Father." As a
result of this, many (of) his disciples returned to their former
way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the
Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" Simon Peter
answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the
words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced
that you are the Holy One of God." [JN
6:43-69] He said to them again, "I am going away and
you will look for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am
going you cannot come." So the Jews said, "He is not
going to kill himself, is he, because he said, 'Where I am going
you cannot come'?" He said to them, "You belong to what
is below, I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but
I do not belong to this world. That is why I told you that you
will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you
will die in your sins." So they said to him, "Who are
you?" Jesus said to them, "What I told you from the
beginning. I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the
one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the
world." They did not realize that he was speaking to them of
the Father. So Jesus said (to them), "When you lift up the
Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing
on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me. The one who
sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do
what is pleasing to him." Because he spoke this way, many
came to believe in him. [JN 8:21-30] So a second time they called the man who had
been blind and said to him, "Give God the praise! We know
that this man is a sinner." He replied, "If he is a
sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know is that I was blind and
now I see." So they said to him, "What did he do to you?
How did he open your eyes?" He answered them, "I told
you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it
again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?" They
ridiculed him and said, "You are that man's disciple; we are
disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not
know where this one is from." The man answered and said to
them, "This is what is so amazing, that you do not know where
he is from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not
listen to sinners, but if one is devout and does his will, he
listens to him. It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes
of a person born blind. If this man were not from God, he would
not be able to do anything." They answered and said to him,
"You were born totally in sin, and are you trying to teach
us?" Then they threw him out. When Jesus heard that they had
thrown him out, he found him and said, "Do you believe in the
Son of Man?" He answered and said, "Who is he, sir, that
I may believe in him?" Jesus said to him, "You have seen
him and the one speaking with you is he." He said, "I do
believe, Lord," and he worshiped him. [JN 9:24-38] And Jesus walked about in the temple area on the
Portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to
him, "How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you
are the Messiah, tell us plainly." Jesus answered them,
"I told you and you do not believe. The works I do in my
Father's name testify to me. But you do not believe, because you
are not among my sheep. My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and
they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never
perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has
given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them
out of the Father's hand. The Father and I are one." The Jews
again picked up rocks to stone him. Jesus answered them, "I
have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of these
are you trying to stone me?" The Jews answered him, "We
are not stoning you for a good work but for blasphemy. You, a man,
are making yourself God." Jesus answered them, "Is it
not written in your law, 'I said, "You are gods"'? If it
calls them gods to whom the word of God came, and scripture cannot
be set aside, can you say that the one whom the Father has
consecrated and sent into the world blasphemes because I said, 'I
am the Son of God'? If I do not perform my Father's works, do not
believe me; but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me,
believe the works, so that you may realize (and understand) that
the Father is in me and I am in the Father." (Then) they
tried again to arrest him; but he escaped from their power. [JN
10:23-39] Now a man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the
village of Mary and her sister Martha. Mary was the one who had
anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and dried his feet with her
hair; it was her brother Lazarus who was ill. So the sisters sent
word to him, saying, "Master, the one you love is ill."
When Jesus heard this he said, "This illness is not to end in
death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be
glorified through it." [JN 11:1-4] When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she
went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus,
"Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
(But) even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give
you." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise."
Martha said to him, "I know he will rise, in the resurrection
on the last day." Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection
and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,
and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you
believe this?" She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come
to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who
is coming into the world."... So Jesus, perturbed again, came
to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay across it. Jesus said,
"Take away the stone." Martha, the dead man's sister,
said to him, "Lord, by now there will be a stench; he has
been dead for four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not
tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?"
So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said,
"Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always
hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they
may believe that you sent me." And when he had said this, he
cried out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead
man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face
was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, "Untie him and
let him go." [JN 11:20-27,38-44] Now there were some Greeks among those who had
come up to worship at the feast. They came to Philip, who was from
Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, "Sir, we would like to
see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and
Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour
has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to
you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it
remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much
fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life
in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me
must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The
Father will honor whoever serves me. I am troubled now. Yet
what should I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But it was
for this purpose that I came to this hour. Father, glorify your
name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified
it and will glorify it again." The crowd there heard it and
said it was thunder; but others said, "An angel has spoken to
him." Jesus answered and said, "This voice did not come
for my sake but for yours. Now is the time of judgment on this
world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And when I
am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself."
He said this indicating the kind of death he would die. So the
crowd answered him, "We have heard from the law that the
Messiah remains forever. Then how can you say that the Son of Man
must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?" Jesus said to
them, "The light will be among you only a little while. Walk
while you have the light, so that darkness may not overcome you.
Whoever walks in the dark does not know where he is going. While
you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become
children of the light." After he had said this, Jesus left
and hid from them. Although he had performed so many signs in
their presence they did not believe in him, in order that the word
which Isaiah the prophet spoke might be fulfilled: "Lord, who
has believed our preaching, to whom has the might of the Lord been
revealed?" For this reason they could not believe, because
again Isaiah said: "He blinded their eyes and hardened their
heart, so that they might not see with their eyes and understand
with their heart and be converted, and I would heal them."
Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke about him.
Nevertheless, many, even among the authorities, believed in him,
but because of the Pharisees they did not acknowledge it openly in
order not to be expelled from the synagogue. For they preferred
human praise to the glory of God. [JN 12:20-43] When he had left, Jesus said, "Now is the
Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. (If God is
glorified in him,) God will also glorify him in himself, and he
will glorify him at once. My children, I will be with you only a
little while longer. You will look for me, and as I told the Jews,
'Where I go you cannot come,' so now I say it to you. I give you a
new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you
also should love one another. This is how all will know that you
are my disciples, if you have love for one another." [JN
13:31-35] Once more Pilate went out and said to them,
"Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know
that I find no guilt in him." So Jesus came out, wearing the
crown of thorns and the purple cloak. And he said to them,
"Behold, the man!" When the chief priests and the guards
saw him they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!"
Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him. I
find no guilt in him." The Jews answered, "We have a
law, and according to that law he ought to die, because he made
himself the Son of God." [JN 19:4-7] Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence
of (his) disciples that are not written in this book. But these
are written that you may (come to) believe that Jesus is the
Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have
life in his name. [JN 20:30-31] "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in
heart and ears, you always oppose the Holy Spirit; you are just
like your ancestors. Which of the prophets did your ancestors not
persecute? They put to death those who foretold the coming of the
righteous one, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.
You received the law as transmitted by angels, but you did not
observe it." When they heard this, they were infuriated, and
they ground their teeth at him. But he, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and
Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and he said,
"Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing
at the right hand of God." But they cried out in a loud
voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him together. They
threw him out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses
laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. As
they were stoning Stephen, he called out, "Lord Jesus,
receive my spirit." Then he fell to his knees and cried out
in a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against
them"; and when he said this, he fell asleep. [ACTS 7:51-60] There was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias,
and the Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias." He
answered, "Here I am, Lord." The Lord said to him,
"Get up and go to the street called Straight and ask at the
house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is there
praying, and (in a vision) he has seen a man named Ananias come in
and lay (his) hands on him, that he may regain his sight."
But Ananias replied, "Lord, I have heard from many sources
about this man, what evil things he has done to your holy ones in
Jerusalem. And here he has authority from the chief priests to
imprison all who call upon your name." But the Lord said to
him, "Go, for this man is a chosen instrument of mine to
carry my name before Gentiles, kings, and Israelites, and I will
show him what he will have to suffer for my name." So Ananias
went and entered the house; laying his hands on him, he said,
"Saul, my brother, the Lord has sent me, Jesus who appeared
to you on the way by which you came, that you may regain your
sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." Immediately things
like scales fell from his eyes and he regained his sight. He got
up and was baptized, and when he had eaten, he recovered his
strength. He stayed some days with the disciples in Damascus, and
he began at once to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, that he is
the Son of God. [ACTS 9:10-20] Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called to be an
apostle and set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised
previously through his prophets in the holy scriptures, the gospel
about his Son, descended from David according to the flesh, but
established as Son of God in power according to the spirit of
holiness through resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our
Lord. [ROM 1:1-4] So when I intended this, did I act lightly? Or
do I make my plans according to human considerations, so that with
me it is "yes, yes" and "no, no"? As God is
faithful, our word to you is not "yes" and
"no." For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was
proclaimed to you by us, Silvanus and Timothy and me, was not
"yes" and "no," but "yes" has been
in him. For however many are the promises of God, their Yes is in
him; therefore, the Amen from us also goes through him to God for
glory. [2COR 1:17-20] For through the law I died to the law, that I
might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ; yet I live,
no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the
flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and
given himself up for me. [GAL 2:19-20]  The one who descended is also the one who
ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.
And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as
evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy
ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son
of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of
Christ, so that we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and
swept along by every wind of teaching arising from human trickery,
from their cunning in the interests of deceitful scheming. Rather,
living the truth in love, we should grow in every way into him who
is the head, Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held
together by every supporting ligament, with the proper functioning
of each part, brings about the body's growth and builds itself up
in love. [EPH 4:10-16] For to which of the angels did God ever say:
"You are my son; this day I have begotten you"? Or
again: "I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to
me"? [HEB 1:5] Therefore, since we have a great high priest who
has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold
fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is
unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has
similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin. So let us
confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to
find grace for timely help. [HEB 4:14-16] In the same way, it was not Christ who glorified
himself in becoming high priest, but rather the one who said to
              him: "You are my son; this day I have begotten you";
just as he says in another place: "You are a priest forever
according to the order of Melchizedek." [HEB 5:5-6] For it is impossible in the case of those who
have once been enlightened and tasted the heavenly gift and shared
in the Holy Spirit and tasted the good word of God and the powers
of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to bring them to
repentance again, since they are recrucifying the Son of God for
themselves and holding him up to contempt. Ground that has
absorbed the rain falling upon it repeatedly and brings forth
crops useful to those for whom it is cultivated receives a
blessing from God. But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is
rejected; it will soon be cursed and finally burned. [HEB 6:4-8] This "Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest
of God Most High," "met Abraham as he returned from his
defeat of the kings" and "blessed him." And Abraham
apportioned to him "a tenth of everything." His name
first means righteous king, and he was also "king of
Salem," that is, king of peace. Without father, mother, or
ancestry, without beginning of days or end of life, thus made to
resemble the Son of God, he remains a priest forever. See how
great he is to whom the patriarch "Abraham (indeed) gave a
tenth" of his spoils. [HEB 7:1-4] We should not stay away from our assembly, as is
the custom of some, but encourage one another, and this all the
more as you see the day drawing near. If we sin deliberately after
receiving knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains
sacrifice for sins but a fearful prospect of judgment and a
flaming fire that is going to consume the adversaries. Anyone who
rejects the law of Moses is put to death without pity on the
testimony of two or three witnesses. Do you not think that a much
worse punishment is due the one who has contempt for the Son of
God, considers unclean the covenant-blood by which he was
consecrated, and insults the spirit of grace? We know the one who
said: "Vengeance is mine; I will repay," and again:
"The Lord will judge his people." It is a fearful thing
to fall into the hands of the living God. [HEB 10:25-31] Children, let no one deceive you. The person who
acts in righteousness is righteous, just as he is righteous.
Whoever sins belongs to the devil, because the devil has sinned
from the beginning. Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy
the works of the devil. No one who is begotten by God commits sin,
because God's seed remains in him; he cannot sin because he is
begotten by God. In this way, the children of God and the children
of the devil are made plain; no one who fails to act in
righteousness belongs to God, nor anyone who does not love his
brother. [1JN 3:7-10] Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love
one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one
another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection
in us. This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us,
that he has given us of his Spirit. Moreover, we have seen and
testify that the Father sent his Son as savior of the world.
Whoever acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in
him and he in God. We have come to know and to believe in the love
God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains
in God and God in him. [1JN 4:11-16] Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ
is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the father loves (also)
the one begotten by him. In this way we know that we love the
children of God when we love God and obey his commandments. For
the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his
commandments are not burdensome, for whoever is begotten by God
conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our
faith. Who (indeed) is the victor over the world but the one who
believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came
through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by
water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and the
Spirit is truth. So there are three that testify, the Spirit, the
water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord. If we
accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater.
Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf
of his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony
within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar
by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son. And
this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is
in his Son. Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not
possess the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to
you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who
believe in the name of the Son of God. And we have this confidence
in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears
us. And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask,
we know that what we have asked him for is ours. If anyone sees
his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to
God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is
not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do
not say that you should pray. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is
              sin that is not deadly. We know that no one begotten by God sins;
but the one begotten by God he protects, and the evil one cannot
touch him. We know that we belong to God, and the whole world is
under the power of the evil one. We also know that the Son of God
has come and has given us discernment to know the one who is true.
And we are in the one who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is
the true God and eternal life. [1JN 5:1-20] I, John, your brother, who share with you the
distress, the kingdom, and the endurance we have in Jesus, found
myself on the island called Patmos because I proclaimed God's word
and gave testimony to Jesus. I was caught up in spirit on the
Lord's day and heard behind me a voice as loud as a trumpet, which
said, "Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the
seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis,
Philadelphia, and Laodicea." Then I turned to see whose voice
it was that spoke to me, and when I turned, I saw seven gold
lampstands and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of
man, wearing an ankle-length robe, with a gold sash around his
chest. The hair of his head was as white as white wool or as snow,
and his eyes were like a fiery flame. His feet were like polished
brass refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of
rushing water. In his right hand he held seven stars. A sharp
two-edged sword came out of his mouth, and his face shone like the
sun at its brightest. When I caught sight of him, I fell down at
his feet as though dead. He touched me with his right hand and
said, "Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last, the one
who lives. Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. I
hold the keys to death and the netherworld. Write down, therefore,
what you have seen, and what is happening, and what will happen
afterwards. This is the secret meaning of the seven stars you saw
in my right hand, and of the seven gold lampstands: the seven
stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven
lampstands are the seven churches." [RV 1:9-20] "To the angel of the church in Thyatira,
write this: 'The Son of God, whose eyes are like a fiery
flame and whose feet are like polished brass, says this: "I
know your works, your love, faith, service, and endurance, and
that your last works are greater than the first. Yet I hold this
against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls
herself a prophetess, who teaches and misleads my servants to play
the harlot and to eat food sacrificed to idols. I have given her
time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her harlotry. So I
will cast her on a sickbed and plunge those who commit adultery
with her into intense suffering unless they repent of her works. I
will also put her children to death. Thus shall all the churches
come to know that I am the searcher of hearts and minds and that I
will give each of you what your works deserve. But I say to the
rest of you in Thyatira, who do not uphold this teaching and know
nothing of the so-called deep secrets of Satan: on you I will
place no further burden, except that you must hold fast to what
you have until I come. To the victor, who keeps to
my ways until the end, I will give authority over the nations. He
will rule them with an iron rod. Like clay vessels will they be
smashed, just as I received authority from my Father. And to him I
will give the morning star." Whoever has ears ought
to hear what the Spirit says to the churches.'" [RV 2:18-29] I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write
this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on."
"Yes," said the Spirit, "let them find rest from
their labors, for their works accompany them." Then I looked
and there was a white cloud, and sitting on the cloud one who
looked like a son of man, with a gold crown on his head and a
sharp sickle in his hand. Another angel came out of the temple,
crying out in a loud voice to the one sitting on the cloud,
"Use your sickle and reap the harvest, for the time to reap
has come, because the earth's harvest is fully ripe." So the
one who was sitting on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth,
and the earth was harvested. [RV 14:13-16] Also try: Jesus
