            The LORD also told him,
"I am coming to you in a dense cloud, so that when the people
hear me speaking with you, they may always have faith in you
also." When Moses, then, had reported to the LORD the
response of the people, the LORD added, "Go to the people and
have them sanctify themselves today and tomorrow. Make them wash
their garments and be ready for the third day; for on the third
day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai before the eyes of all
the people. Set limits for the people all around the mountain, and
tell them: Take care not to go up the mountain, or even to touch
its base. If anyone touches the mountain, he must be put to
death." [Taken from EX 19:9-12] When the LORD came down to the top of Mount Sinai, he
              summoned Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up to him. Then the LORD told Moses, "Go down and warn the people not to break through toward the LORD in order to see him;
otherwise many of them will be struck down. The priests, too, who approach the LORD must sanctify themselves; else he will vent his anger upon them."
              [EX 19:20-22]
Sanctify yourselves, then, and be holy; for I,
the LORD, your God, am holy. [LEV 20:7]
Joshua also said to the people, "Sanctify
yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will perform wonders among
              you." [JOSH 3:5]
Rise, sanctify the people. Tell them to sanctify
themselves before tomorrow, for the LORD, the God of Israel, says:
You are under the ban, O Israel. You cannot stand up to your
enemies until you remove from among you whoever has incurred the
              ban. [JOSH 7:13]
David summoned the priests Zadok and Abiathar,
and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and
Amminadab, and said to them: "You, the heads of the levitical
families, must sanctify yourselves along with your brethren and
bring the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place which I
have prepared for it. Because you were not with us the first time,
the wrath of the LORD our God burst upon us, for we did not seek
him aright." Accordingly, the priests and the Levites
sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of
              Israel. [1CHRON 15:11-14]
Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he
became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His
mother was named Abia, daughter of Zechariah. He pleased the LORD
just as his forefather David had done. It was he who, in the first
month of the first year of his reign, opened the doors of the
LORD'S house and repaired them. He summoned the priests and
Levites, gathered them in the open space to the east, and said to
them: "Listen to me, you Levites! Sanctify yourselves now and
sanctify the house of the LORD, the God of your fathers, and clean
out the filth from the sanctuary. Our fathers acted faithlessly
and did evil in the eyes of the LORD, our God... Therefore the
anger of the LORD has come upon Judah and Jerusalem; he has made
them an object of terror, astonishment and mockery, as you see
with your own eyes... Now, I intend to make a covenant with the
LORD, the God of Israel, that his burning anger may withdraw from
us. My sons, be not negligent any longer, for it is you whom the
LORD has chosen to stand before him, to minister to him, to be his
ministers and to offer incense." Then the Levites arose...
              They gathered their brethren together and sanctified themselves;
then they came as the king had ordered, to cleanse the LORD'S
house in keeping with his words. [Taken from 2CHRON 29:1-6,8,10-12,15]
              Their brethren
the Levites assisted them until the task was completed and the
priests had sanctified themselves; the Levites, in fact, were more
willing than the priests to sanctify themselves. [Taken from
              2CHRON 29:34]
The king, his princes, and the entire assembly in Jerusalem had agreed to celebrate the Passover during the second month, for they could not celebrate it at the time of the restoration: the priests had not sanctified themselves in sufficient numbers, and the people were not gathered at Jerusalem.
              [2CHRON 30:2-3]
The priests and Levites, touched with
shame, sanctified themselves [Taken from 2CHRON 30:15]
The priests sanctified themselves in great numbers, and the whole assembly of Judah rejoiced, together with the priests and Levites and the rest of the assembly that had come from Israel, as well as the sojourners from the land of Israel and those that lived in Judah.
              [Taken from 2CHRON 30:24-25]
There was also a register by ancestral houses of
males thirty years of age and over, for all priests who were
eligible to enter the house of the LORD according to the daily
rule to fulfill their service in the order of their classes. The
priests were inscribed in their family records according to their
ancestral houses, and the Levites of twenty years and over
according to their various offices and classes. A distribution was
also made to all who were inscribed in the family records, for
their little ones, wives, sons and daughters - thus for the entire
assembly, since they were to sanctify themselves by sharing
faithfully in the consecrated things. [2CHRON 31:16-18]
              Sanctify
yourselves, and be at the disposition of your brethren [Taken from
              2CHRON 35:6]
They decreed that they would use up the first
fruits of grain and the tithes of wine and oil which they had
sanctified and reserved for the priests who minister in the
presence of our God in Jerusalem: things which no layman should
even touch with his hands. [JDTH 11:13]
The prayer was as follows: "Lord, Lord God,
creator of all things, awesome and strong, just and merciful, the
only king and benefactor, who alone are gracious, just, almighty,
and eternal, Israel's savior from all evil, who chose our
forefathers and sanctified them: accept this sacrifice on behalf
of all your people Israel and guard and sanctify your heritage.
Gather together our scattered people, free those who are the
slaves of the Gentiles, look kindly on those who are despised and
detested, and let the Gentiles know that you are our God. Punish
those who tyrannize over us and arrogantly mistreat us. Plant your
people in your holy place, as Moses promised." [2MACC 1:24-29]
When Jeremiah arrived there, he found a room in
a cave in which he put the tent, the ark, and the altar of
incense; then he blocked up the entrance. Some of those who
followed him came up intending to mark the path, but they could
not find it. When Jeremiah heard of this, he reproved them:
"The place is to remain unknown until God gathers his people
together again and shows them mercy. Then the Lord will disclose
these things, and the glory of the Lord will be seen in the cloud,
just as it appeared in the time of Moses and when Solomon prayed
that the Place might be gloriously sanctified." [2MACC 2:5-8]
His sons used to take turns giving feasts, sending invitations to their three sisters to eat and drink with them. And when each feast had run its course, Job would send for them and sanctify
              them [Taken from JOB 1:4-5]
Why is one day more important than another, when
it is the sun that lights up every day? It is due to the LORD'S
wisdom that they differ; it is through him the seasons and feasts
come and go. Some he dignifies and sanctifies, and others he lists
as ordinary days. So too, all men are of clay, for from earth man
was formed; Yet with his great knowledge the LORD makes men
unlike; in different paths he has them walk. Some he blesses and
makes great, some he sanctifies and draws to himself. Others he
curses and brings low, and expels them from their place. Like clay
in the hands of a potter, to be molded according to his pleasure,
So are men in the hands of their Creator, to be assigned by him
              their function. [SIRACH 33:7-13]
Consequently, you too must think of yourselves
as (being) dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.
Therefore, sin must not reign over your mortal bodies so that you
obey their desires. And do not present the parts of your bodies to
sin as weapons for wickedness, but present yourselves to God as
raised from the dead to life and the parts of your bodies to God
as weapons for righteousness. For sin is not to have any power
over you, since you are not under the law but under grace. What
then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under
grace? Of course not! Do you not know that if you present
yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the
one you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of
obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God
that, although you were once slaves of sin, you have become
obedient from the heart to the pattern of teaching to which you
were entrusted. Freed from sin, you have become slaves of
righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of the
weakness of your nature. For just as you presented the parts of
your bodies as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness for
lawlessness, so now present them as slaves to righteousness for
sanctification. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free
from righteousness. But what profit did you get then from the
things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things
is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and have
become slaves of God, the benefit that you have leads to
sanctification, and its end is eternal life. For the wages of sin
is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
              Lord. [ROM 6:11-23]
But I have written to you rather boldly in some respects to remind you, because of the grace given me by God to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in performing the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering up of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the
              Holy Spirit. [ROM 15:15-16]
Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by
the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, to the church of God
that is in Corinth, to you who have been sanctified in Christ
Jesus, called to be holy, with all those everywhere who call upon
the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours. Grace to
you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. [1COR
              1:1-3]
Consider your own calling, brothers. Not many of
you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many
were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to
shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the
strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those
who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are
something, so that no human being might boast before God. It is
due to him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom
from God, as well as righteousness, sanctification, and
redemption, so that, as it is written, "Whoever boasts,
should boast in the Lord." [1COR 1:26-31]
Now indeed (then) it is, in any case, a failure
on your part that you have lawsuits against one another. Why not
rather put up with injustice? Why not rather let yourselves be
cheated? Instead, you inflict injustice and cheat, and this to
brothers. Do you not know that the unjust will not inherit the
kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators nor
idolaters nor adulterers nor boy prostitutes nor practicing
homosexuals nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor
slanderers nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God. That is
what some of you used to be; but now you have had yourselves
washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the
Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. [1COR 6:7-11]
Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to
the Lord. For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is
head of the church, he himself the savior of the body. As the
church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to
their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as
Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her to
sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word,
that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without
spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and
without blemish. So (also) husbands should love their wives as
their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one
hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as
Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.
"For this reason a man shall leave (his) father and (his)
mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one
flesh." This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to
Christ and the church. In any case, each one of you should love
his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband. [EPH
              5:22-33]
Therefore, God is sending them a deceiving power
so that they may believe the lie, that all who have not believed
the truth but have approved wrongdoing may be condemned. But we
ought to give thanks to God for you always, brothers loved by the
Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits for salvation
through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in truth. To this
end he has (also) called you through our gospel to possess the
glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, brothers, stand firm
and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an
oral statement or by a letter of ours. [2THES 2:11-15]
But when Christ came as high priest of the good
things that have come to be, passing through the greater and more
perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is, not belonging to
this creation, he entered once for all into the sanctuary...with
his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. For if the blood
[of lesser creatures was formerly able to]... sanctify those who
are defiled so that their flesh is cleansed, how much more will
the blood of Christ [the Son of God], who through the eternal
spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences
from dead works to worship the living God. [Adapted from HEB 9:11-14]
[Note: Explanatory text has been included in brackets above.]
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the chosen sojourners of the
dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, in the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification by the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ: may grace and peace be yours in abundance.
              [1PT 1:1-2]
Now who is going to harm you if you are
enthusiastic for what is good? But even if you should suffer
because of righteousness, blessed are you. Do not be afraid or
terrified with fear of them, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your
hearts. Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks
you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and
reverence, keeping your conscience clear, so that, when you are
maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ may
themselves be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing
good, if that be the will of God, than for doing evil. For Christ
also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the
unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the
flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit. [1PT 3:13-18]
