When Joseph came to them in the morning, he noticed that they looked disturbed. So he asked Pharaoh's courtiers who were with him in custody in his master's house, "Why do you look so sad today?" They answered him, "We have had dreams, but there is no one to interpret them for us." Joseph said to them, "Surely, interpretations come from God. Please tell the dreams to me."
              [GEN 40:6-8]
In the month Nisan of the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when the wine was in my charge, I took some and offered it to the king. As I had never before been sad in his presence, the king asked me, "Why do you look sad? If you are not sick, you must be sad at heart." Though I was seized with great fear,
I answered the king: "May the king live forever! How could I not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been eaten out by fire?"
              [NEH 2:1-3]
Ezra read plainly from the book of the law of God, interpreting
it so that all could understand what was read. Then (Nehemiah,
that is, His Excellency, and) Ezra the priest-scribe (and the
Levites who were instructing the people) said to all the people:
"Today is holy to the LORD your God. Do not be sad, and do
not weep"-for all the people were weeping as they heard the
words of the law. He said further: "Go, eat rich foods and
drink sweet drinks, and allot portions to those who had nothing
prepared; for today is holy to our LORD. Do not be saddened this
day, for rejoicing in the LORD must be your strength!" (And
the Levites quieted all the people, saying, "Hush, for today
is holy, and you must not be saddened.") Then all the people
went to eat and drink, to distribute portions, and to celebrate
with great joy, for they understood the words that had been
              expounded to them. [NEH 8:8-12]
If I say: I will forget my complaining, I will lay aside my
              sadness and be of good cheer, Then I am in dread of all my pains;
I know that you will not hold me innocent. If I must be accounted
guilty, why then should I strive in vain? [JOB 9:27-29]
Even in laughter the heart may be sad, and the end of joy may
              be sorrow. [PROV 14:13]
Sorrow is better than laughter, because when the face is sad
the heart grows wiser. [ECCL 7:3]
Depressed mind, saddened face, broken heart - this from an evil
wife. Feeble hands and quaking knees - from a wife who brings no
happiness to her husband. [SIRACH 25:22]
              Do not give in to sadness,  torment not yourself with brooding;
Gladness of heart is the very life of man, cheerfulness prolongs his days.
              [SIRACH 30:21-22]
The young man said to him, "All of these I have observed.
What do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you wish
to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to (the) poor, and
you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." When
the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had
many possessions. Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Amen, I
say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the
kingdom of heaven. Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to
pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter
the kingdom of God." [MT 19:20-24]
As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down
before him, and asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to
inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered him, "Why do you
call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the
              commandments: 'You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery;
you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall
not defraud; honor your father and your mother.'" He replied
and said to him, "Teacher, all of these I have observed from
my youth." Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him,
"You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and
give to (the) poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then
come, follow me." At that statement his face fell, and he
went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around
and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for those who have
wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" [MK 10:17-23]
An official asked him this question, "Good teacher, what
must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered him,
"Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You
know the commandments, 'You shall not commit adultery; you shall
              not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness;
honor your father and your mother.'" And he replied,
"All of these I have observed from my youth." When Jesus
heard this he said to him, "There is still one thing left for
you: sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you
will have a treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." But
when he heard this he became quite sad, for he was very rich.
Jesus looked at him (now sad) and said, "How hard it is for
those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! For it is
easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a
rich person to enter the kingdom of God." [LK 18:18-25]
              For even if I saddened you by my letter, I do not regret it;
and if I did regret it ((for) I see that that letter saddened you,
if only for a while), I rejoice now, not because you were
saddened, but because you were saddened into repentance; for you
were saddened in a godly way, so that you did not suffer loss in
anything because of us. For godly sorrow produces a salutary
repentance without regret, but worldly sorrow produces death. For
behold what earnestness this godly sorrow has produced for you, as
well as readiness for a defense, and indignation, and fear, and
yearning, and zeal, and punishment. In every way you have shown
yourselves to be innocent in the matter. [2COR 7:8-11]
Consider this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,
and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each must
do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God
loves a cheerful giver. Moreover, God is able to make every grace
abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you
need, you may have an abundance for every good work. As it is
written: "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his
righteousness endures forever." The one who supplies seed to
the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed
and increase the harvest of your righteousness. [2COR 9:6-10]

Joseph could no longer control himself in the
presence of all his attendants, so he cried out, "Have
everyone withdraw from me!" Thus no one else was about when
he made himself known to his brothers. [GEN 45:1]
Lust indulged starves the soul, but fools hate to turn from
              evil. [PROV 13:19]
If you find honey, eat only what you need, lest you become glutted with it and vomit it up.
              [PROV 25:16]
Go not after your lusts, but keep your desires in check. If you
satisfy your lustful appetites they will make you the sport of
your enemies. Have no joy in the pleasures of a moment which bring
on poverty redoubled; Become not a glutton and a winebibber with
nothing in your purse. [SIRACH 18:30-33]
Be not drawn after every enjoyment, neither become a glutton for choice foods, For sickness comes with overeating, and gluttony brings on biliousness. Through lack of self-control many have died, but the abstemious man prolongs his life. [SIRACH 37:28-30]
Now in regard to the matters about which you
wrote: "It is a good thing for a man not to touch a
woman," but because of cases of immorality every man should
have his own wife, and every woman her own husband. The husband
should fulfill his duty toward his wife, and likewise the wife
toward her husband. A wife does not have authority over her own
body, but rather her husband, and similarly a husband does not
have authority over his own body, but rather his wife. Do not
deprive each other, except perhaps by mutual consent for a time,
to be free for prayer, but then return to one another, so that
Satan may not tempt you through your lack of self-control. This I
say by way of concession, however, not as a command. Indeed, I
wish everyone to be as I am, but each has a particular gift from
God, one of one kind and one of another. Now to the unmarried and
to widows, I say: it is a good thing for them to remain as they
are, as I do, but if they cannot exercise self-control they should
marry, for it is better to marry than to be on fire. [1COR 7:1-9]
For you were called for freedom, brothers. But
do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather,
serve one another through love. For the whole law is fulfilled in
one statement, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as
yourself." But if you go on biting and devouring one another,
beware that you are not consumed by one another. I say, then: live
by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the
flesh. For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the
Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that
you may not do what you want. But if you are guided by the Spirit,
you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious:
immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds,
rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness,
dissensions, factions, occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies,
and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who
do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. In contrast,
the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such
there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ (Jesus) have
crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in
the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit. Let us not be
conceited, provoking one another, envious of one another. [GAL
              5:13-26]
It is my wish, then, that in every place the men
should pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument.
Similarly, (too,) women should adorn themselves with proper
conduct, with modesty and self-control, not with braided
hairstyles and gold ornaments, or pearls, or expensive clothes,
but rather, as befits women who profess reverence for God, with
good deeds. A woman must receive instruction silently and under
complete control. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have
authority over a man. She must be quiet. For Adam was formed
first, then Eve. Further, Adam was not deceived, but the woman was
deceived and transgressed. But she will be saved through
motherhood, provided women persevere in faith and love and
              holiness, with self-control. [1TM 2:8-15]
This saying is trustworthy: whoever aspires to
the office of bishop desires a noble task. Therefore, a bishop
must be irreproachable, married only once, temperate,
self-controlled, decent, hospitable, able to teach, not a
drunkard, not aggressive, but gentle, not contentious, not a lover
of money. He must manage his own household well, keeping his
children under control with perfect dignity; for if a man does not
know how to manage his own household, how can he take care of the
church of God? [1TM 3:1-5] [Note: Religious offices indicated
in the New Testament are in their infancy and can be shown to be
developing even in Scripture. Within a short time, many religious
offices in the Church adopted Jesus' and Paul's recommended
              observance of celibacy as a
              general rule.]
For this reason, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.
              [2TM 1:6-7]
For a bishop as God's steward must be blameless, not arrogant, not irritable, not a drunkard, not aggressive, not greedy for sordid gain,
but hospitable, a lover of goodness, temperate, just, holy, and self-controlled,
holding fast to the true message as taught so that he will be able both to exhort with sound doctrine and to refute opponents.
              [TI 1:7-9]
As for yourself, you must say what is consistent
with sound doctrine, namely, that older men should be temperate,
dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, love, and endurance.
Similarly, older women should be reverent in their behavior, not
slanderers, not addicted to drink, teaching what is good, so that
they may train younger women to love their husbands and children,
to be self-controlled, chaste, good homemakers, under the control
of their husbands, so that the word of God may not be discredited.
Urge the younger men, similarly, to control themselves, showing
yourself as a model of good deeds in every respect, with integrity
in your teaching, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be
criticized, so that the opponent will be put to shame without
anything bad to say about us. [TI 2:1-8]
His divine power has bestowed on us everything
that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of him who
called us by his own glory and power. Through these, he has
bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that
through them you may come to share in the divine nature, after
escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil
desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your
faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with
self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with
devotion, devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with
love. If these are yours and increase in abundance, they will keep
you from being idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord
Jesus Christ. Anyone who lacks them is blind and shortsighted,
forgetful of the cleansing of his past sins. Therefore, brothers,
be all the more eager to make your call and election firm, for, in
doing so, you will never stumble. For, in this way, entry into the
eternal kingdom of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ will be richly
              provided for you. [2PT 1:3-11]

             By your stubbornness and
impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself for the
day of wrath and revelation of the just judgment of God, who will
repay everyone according to his works: eternal life to those who
seek glory, honor, and immortality through perseverance in good
works, but wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth
              and obey wickedness. [ROM 2:5-8]
For I fear that when I come I may find you not such as I wish,
and that you may find me not as you wish; that there may be
rivalry, jealousy, fury, selfishness, slander, gossip, conceit,
and disorder. I fear that when I come again my God may humiliate
me before you, and I may have to mourn over many of those who
sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, immorality,
and licentiousness they practiced. [2COR 12:20-21]
Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity,
licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy,
outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions,
occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn
you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will
not inherit the kingdom of God. [GAL 5:19-21]
Of course, some preach Christ from envy and rivalry, others
from good will. The latter act out of love, aware that I am here
for the defense of the gospel; the former proclaim Christ out of
selfish ambition, not from pure motives, thinking that they will
cause me trouble in my imprisonment. What difference does it make,
as long as in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ
is being proclaimed? And in that I rejoice. Indeed I shall
continue to rejoice, for I know that this will result in
deliverance for me through your prayers and support from the
Spirit of Jesus Christ. [PHIL 1:15-19]
If there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love,
any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy,
complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love,
united in heart, thinking one thing. Do nothing out of selfishness
or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more
important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own
interests, but (also) everyone for those of others. Have among
yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus,
Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality
with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found
human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to
death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted
him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at
the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and
on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. [PHIL 2:1-11]
Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show his works
by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you
have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not
boast and be false to the truth. Wisdom of this kind does not come
down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where
jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every
foul practice. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure,
then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits,
without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness
is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. [JMS 3:13-18]

             When Jesus finished
these words, he left Galilee and went to the district of Judea
across the Jordan. Great crowds followed him, and he cured them
there. Some Pharisees approached him, and tested him, saying,
"Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause
whatever?" He said in reply, "Have you not read that
from the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female' and
said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and
be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So
they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has
joined together, no human being must separate." They said to
him, "Then why did Moses command that the man give the woman
a bill of divorce and dismiss (her)?" He said to them,
"Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to
divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. I say to
you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful)
and marries another commits adultery." [MT 19:1-9]

He set out from there and went into the district
of Judea (and) across the Jordan. Again crowds gathered around him
and, as was his custom, he again taught them. The Pharisees
approached and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce
his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply,
"What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses
permitted him to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her."
But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts
he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation,
'God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave
his father and mother (and be joined to his wife), and the two
shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must
separate." In the house the disciples again questioned him
about this. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and
marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces
her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." [MK 10:1-12]
To the married, however, I give this instruction
(not I, but the Lord): a wife should not separate from her husband
              - and if she does separate she must either remain single or become
reconciled to her husband - and a husband should not divorce his
wife. To the rest I say (not the Lord): if any brother has a wife
who is an unbeliever, and she is willing to go on living with him,
he should not divorce her; and if any woman has a husband who is
an unbeliever, and he is willing to go on living with her, she
should not divorce her husband. For the unbelieving husband is
made holy through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy
through the brother. Otherwise your children would be unclean,
whereas in fact they are holy. If the unbeliever separates,
however, let him separate. The brother or sister is not bound in
such cases; God has called you to peace. For how do you know,
wife, whether you will save your husband; or how do you know,
husband, whether you will save your wife? [1COR 7:10-16]
So this is what I think best because of the present distress: that it is a good thing for a person to remain as he is. Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek a separation. Are you free of a wife? Then do not look for a wife.

So the five men went on
and came to Laish. They saw that the people dwelling there lived
securely after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and trusting,
with no lack of any natural resources. They were distant from the
Sidonians and had no contact with other people. When the five
returned to their kinsmen in Zorah and Eshtaol and were asked for
a report, they replied, "Come, let us attack them, for we
have seen the land and it is very good. Are you going to hesitate?
Do not be slothful about beginning your expedition to possess the
land. Those against whom you go are a trusting people, and the
land is ample. God has indeed given it into your power: a place
where no natural resource is lacking." [JUDG 18:7-10]
A gracious woman wins esteem, but she who hates
virtue is covered with shame. (The slothful become impoverished,
but the diligent gain wealth.) [PROV 11:16]
The diligent hand will govern, but the slothful
              will be enslaved. [PROV 12:24]
Laziness plunges a man into deep sleep, and the
sluggard must go hungry. [PROV 19:15]
When hands are lazy, the rafters sag; when hands
are slack, the house leaks. [ECCL 10:18]
Be not surly in your speech, nor lazy and slack
              in your deeds. [SIRACH 4:29]
Speak not to a woman about her rival, nor to a
coward about war, to a merchant about business, to a buyer about
value, to a miser about generosity, to a cruel man about mercy, to
a lazy man about work, to a seasonal laborer about the harvest, to
an idle slave about a great task: pay no attention to any advice
              they give. [SIRACH 37:11]
"It will be as when a man who was going on
a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to
them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third,
one - to each according to his ability. Then he went away.
Immediately the one who received five talents went and traded with
them, and made another five. Likewise, the one who received two
made another two. But the man who received one went off and dug a
hole in the ground and buried his master's money. After a long
time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts
with them. The one who had received five talents came forward
bringing the additional five. He said, 'Master, you gave me five
talents. See, I have made five more.' His master said to him,
'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful
in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come,
share your master's joy.' (Then) the one who had received two
talents also came forward and said, 'Master, you gave me two
talents. See, I have made two more.' His master said to him, 'Well
done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in
small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share
your master's joy.' Then the one who had received the one talent
came forward and said, 'Master, I knew you were a demanding
person, harvesting where you did not plant and gathering where you
did not scatter; so out of fear I went off and buried your talent
in the ground. Here it is back.' His master said to him in reply,
'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I did
not plant and gather where I did not scatter? Should you not then
have put my money in the bank so that I could have got it back
with interest on my return? Now then! Take the talent from him and
give it to the one with ten. For to everyone who has, more will be
given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even
what he has will be taken away. And throw this useless servant
into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and
              grinding of teeth.'" [MT 25:14-30]
For this reason I left you in Crete so that you
might set right what remains to be done and appoint presbyters in
every town, as I directed you, on condition that a man be
blameless, married only once, with believing children who are not
accused of licentiousness or rebellious. For a bishop as God's
steward must be blameless, not arrogant, not irritable, not a
drunkard, not aggressive, not greedy for sordid gain, but
hospitable, a lover of goodness, temperate, just, holy, and
self-controlled, holding fast to the true message as taught so
that he will be able both to exhort with sound doctrine and to
refute opponents. For there are also many rebels, idle talkers and
deceivers, especially the Jewish Christians. It is imperative to
silence them, as they are upsetting whole families by teaching for
sordid gain what they should not. One of them, a prophet of their
own, once said, "Cretans have always been liars, vicious
beasts, and lazy gluttons." That testimony is true.
Therefore, admonish them sharply, so that they may be sound in the
faith, instead of paying attention to Jewish myths and regulations
of people who have repudiated the truth. [TI 1:5-14] [Note:
Religious offices indicated in the New Testament are in their
infancy and can be shown to be developing even in Scripture.
Within a short time, many religious offices in the Church adopted
Jesus' and Paul's recommended observance of celibacy
              as a general rule.]

             Isaac entreated the LORD
on behalf of his wife, since she was sterile. The LORD heard his
entreaty, and Rebekah became pregnant. [GEN 25:21]
For the breed of the impious shall be sterile,
and fire shall consume the tents of extortioners. [JOB 15:34]
A daughter is a treasure that keeps her father wakeful, and worry over her drives away rest:
              Lest she pass her prime unmarried,  or when she is married, lest she be disliked; While unmarried, lest she be seduced,  or, as a wife, lest she prove unfaithful;
Lest she conceive in her father's home, or be sterile in that of her husband.
              [SIRACH 42:9-10]
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go
out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; he went
out, not knowing where he was to go. By faith he sojourned in the
promised land as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with
Isaac and Jacob, heirs of the same promise; for he was looking
forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and maker is
God. By faith he received power to generate, even though he was
past the normal age - and Sarah herself was sterile - for he thought
that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy. So it was
that there came forth from one man, himself as good as dead,
descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless
as the sands on the seashore. [HEB 11:8-12]

             But Abram said, "O
Lord GOD, what good will your gifts be, if I keep on being
childless and have as my heir the steward of my house, Eliezer?"
Abram continued, "See, you have given me no offspring, and so
one of my servants will be my heir." Then the word of the
LORD came to him: "No, that one shall not be your heir; your
own issue shall be your heir." [GEN 15:2-4]
The Midianites, meanwhile, sold Joseph in Egypt
to Potiphar, a courtier of Pharaoh and his chief steward. [GEN
              37:36]
When Joseph was taken down to Egypt, a certain
Egyptian (Potiphar, a courtier of Pharaoh and his chief steward)
bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there. But
since the LORD was with him, Joseph got on very well and was
assigned to the household of his Egyptian master. When his master
saw that the LORD was with him and brought him success in whatever
he did, he took a liking to Joseph and made him his personal
attendant; he put him in charge of his household and entrusted to
him all his possessions. [GEN 39:1-4]
Then the chief cupbearer spoke up and said to
Pharaoh: "On this occasion I am reminded of my negligence.
Once, when Pharaoh was angry, he put me and the chief baker in
custody in the house of the chief steward. Later, we both had
dreams on the same night, and each of our dreams had its own
meaning. There with us was a Hebrew youth, a slave of the chief
steward; and when we told him our dreams, he interpreted them for
us and explained for each of us the meaning of his dream. And it
turned out just as he had told us" [Taken from GEN 41:9-13]
So they went up to Joseph's head steward and
talked to him at the entrance of the house. "If you please,
sir," they said, "we came down here once before to
procure food. But when we arrived at a night's encampment and
opened our bags, there was each man's money in the mouth of his
bag - our money in the full amount! We have now brought it back. We
have brought other money to procure food with. We do not know who
put the first money in our bags." [GEN 43:19-22]
Then Joseph gave his head steward these
instructions: "Fill the men's bags with as much food as they
can carry, and put each man's money in the mouth of his bag. In
the mouth of the youngest one's bag put also my silver goblet,
together with the money for his rations." The steward carried
out Joseph's instructions. At daybreak the men and their donkeys
were sent off. They had not gone far out of the city when Joseph
said to his head steward: "Go at once after the men! When you
overtake them, say to them, 'Why did you repay good with evil? Why
did you steal the silver goblet from me? It is the very one from
which my master drinks and which he uses for divination. What you
have done is wrong.'" When the steward overtook them and
repeated these words to them, they remonstrated with him:
"How can my lord say such things? Far be it from your
servants to do such a thing! We even brought back to you from the
land of Canaan the money that we found in the mouths of our bags.
Why, then, would we steal silver or gold from your master's house?
If any of your servants is found to have the goblet, he shall die,
and as for the rest of us, we shall become my lord's slaves."
              [GEN 44:1-9]
Liquor was served in a variety of golden cups, and the royal wine flowed freely, as befitted the king's munificence.
By ordinance of the king the drinking was unstinted, for he had instructed all the stewards of his household to comply with the good pleasure of
              everyone. [ESTH 1:7-8]
Unseemly is praise on a sinner's lips, for it is not accorded to him by God.
But praise is offered by the wise man's tongue; its rightful steward will proclaim it. [SIRACH 15:9-10]
Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief
chamberlain had put in charge of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and
Azariah, "Please test your servants for ten days. Give us
vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then see how we look in
comparison with the other young men who eat from the royal table,
and treat your servants according to what you see." He
acceded to this request, and tested them for ten days; after ten
days they looked healthier and better fed than any of the young
men who ate from the royal table. So the steward continued to take
away the food and wine they were to receive, and gave them
              vegetables. [DAN 1:11-16]
And the Lord replied, "Who, then, is the
faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of
his servants to distribute (the) food allowance at the proper
time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds
doing so. Truly, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all
his property. But if that servant says to himself, 'My master is
delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the
maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk, then that servant's
master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and
will punish him severely and assign him a place with the
unfaithful. That servant who knew his master's will but did not
make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten
severely; and the servant who was ignorant of his master's will
but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten
only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with
much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with
              more." [LK 12:42-48]
Then he also said to his disciples, "A rich
man had a steward who was reported to him for squandering his
property. He summoned him and said, 'What is this I hear about
you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can
no longer be my steward.' The steward said to himself, 'What shall
I do, now that my master is taking the position of steward away
from me? I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg. I
know what I shall do so that, when I am removed from the
stewardship, they may welcome me into their homes.' He called in
his master's debtors one by one. To the first he said, 'How much
do you owe my master?' He replied, 'One hundred measures of olive
oil.' He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note. Sit down and
quickly write one for fifty.' Then to another he said, 'And you,
how much do you owe?' He replied, 'One hundred kors of wheat.' He
said to him, 'Here is your promissory note; write one for eighty.'
And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting
              prudently." [LK 16:1-8]
Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ
and stewards of the mysteries of God. Now it is of course required of stewards that
they be found trustworthy. [1COR 4:1-2]
If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!
If I do so willingly, I have a recompense, but if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a stewardship.
              [1COR 9:16-17]
Because of this, I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ
(Jesus) for you Gentiles - if, as I suppose, you have heard of the
stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for your benefit,
(namely, that) the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as
I have written briefly earlier. [EPH 3:1-3]
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake,
and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions
of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church, of which I
am a minister in accordance with God's stewardship given to me to
bring to completion for you the word of God, the mystery hidden
from ages and from generations past. But now it has been
manifested to his holy ones, to whom God chose to make known the
riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; it is
Christ in you, the hope for glory. It is he whom we proclaim,
admonishing everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that
we may present everyone perfect in Christ. For this I labor and
struggle, in accord with the exercise of his power working within
              me. [COL 1:24-29]
For a bishop as God's steward must be blameless,
not arrogant, not irritable, not a drunkard, not aggressive, not
greedy for sordid gain, but hospitable, a lover of goodness,
temperate, just, holy, and self-controlled, holding fast to the
true message as taught so that he will be able both to exhort with
sound doctrine and to refute opponents. [TI 1:7-9]
As each one has received a gift, use it to serve
one another as good stewards of God's varied grace. [1PT 4:10]

             The Rock - how faultless
are his deeds, how right all his ways! A faithful God, without
deceit, how just and upright he is! Yet basely has he been treated
by his degenerate children, a perverse and crooked race! Is the
LORD to be thus repaid by you, O stupid and foolish people? Is he
not your father who created you? Has he not made you and
              established you? [DEUT 32:4-6]
But Lysias was not a stupid man. He reflected on the defeat he had suffered, and came to realize that the Hebrews were invincible because the mighty God was their ally. He therefore sent a message
persuading them to settle everything on just terms, and promising to persuade the king also, and to induce him to become their friend.
              [2MACC 11:13-14]
Out of their stupidity comes sin; evil thoughts
              flood their hearts. [PS 73:7]
Since my heart was embittered and my soul deeply
wounded, I was stupid and could not understand; I was like a brute
beast in your presence. Yet I am always with you; you take hold of
my right hand. With your counsel you guide me, and at the end
receive me with honor. [PS 73:21-24]
Understand, you stupid people! You fools, when
will you be wise? Does the one who shaped the ear not hear? The
one who formed the eye not see? Does the one who guides nations
not rebuke? The one who teaches humans not have knowledge? The
LORD does know human plans; they are only puffs of air. [PS 94:8-11]
He who loves correction loves knowledge, but he
who hates reproof is stupid. [PROV 12:1]
The stupid man sows discord by his insolence,
but with those who take counsel is wisdom. [PROV 13:10]
The words of Agur, son of Jakeh the Massaite:
The pronouncement of mortal man: "I am not God; I am not God,
that I should prevail. Why, I am the most stupid of men, and have
not even human intelligence; Neither have I learned wisdom, nor
have I the knowledge of the Holy One." [Taken from PROV 30:1-3]
"For there is a time and a judgment for everything." - Yet it
is a great affliction for man that he is ignorant of what is to
come; for who will make known to him how it will be? There is no
man who is master of the breath of life so as to retain it, and
none has mastery of the day of death. There is no exemption from
the struggle, nor are the wicked saved by their wickedness. [Taken
              from ECCL 8:6-8]
Like a house in ruins is wisdom to a fool; the
stupid man knows it only as inscrutable words. [SIRACH 21:18]
Speak but seldom with the stupid man, be not the
companion of a brute; Beware of him lest you have trouble and be
spattered when he shakes himself; Turn away from him and you will
find rest and not be wearied by his lack of sense. What is heavier
than lead, and what is its name but "Fool"? Sand and
salt and an iron mass are easier to bear than a stupid man. [SIRACH
              22:12-15]
Utter fools are the princes of Zoan! the wisest
of Pharaoh's advisers give stupid counsel. [Taken from ISA 19:11]
Every man is stupid, ignorant; every artisan is
put to shame by his idol: He has molded a fraud, without breath of
              life. [JER 10:14]
Yes, the shepherds were stupid as cattle, the
LORD they sought not; Therefore they had no success, and all their
              flocks were scattered. [JER 10:21]
Every man is stupid, ignorant; every artisan is
put to shame by his idol: He molded a fraud, without breath of
              life. [JER 51:17]
[Jesus said,] "That servant who knew his
master's will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with
his will shall be beaten severely; and the servant who was
ignorant of his master's will but acted in a way deserving of a
severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required
of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded
of the person entrusted with more." [Taken from LK 12:47-48]
              To Greeks and non-Greeks alike, to the wise and the ignorant, I am under obligation;
that is why I am eager to preach the gospel also to you in Rome. [ROM
              1:14-15]
O stupid Galatians! Who has bewitched you,
before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as
crucified? I want to learn only this from you: did you receive the
Spirit from works of the law, or from faith in what you heard? Are
you so stupid? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now ending
with the flesh? Did you experience so many things in vain? - if
indeed it was in vain. [GAL 3:1-4]
Avoid foolish and ignorant debates, for you know
that they breed quarrels. A slave of the Lord should not quarrel,
but should be gentle with everyone, able to teach, tolerant,
correcting opponents with kindness. It may be that God will grant
them repentance that leads to knowledge of the truth, and that
they may return to their senses out of the devil's snare, where
they are entrapped by him, for his will. [2TM 2:23-26]
Every high priest is taken from among men and
made their representative before God, to offer gifts and
sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal patiently with the
ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weakness and so,
for this reason, must make sin offerings for himself as well as
for the people. No one takes this honor upon himself but only when
called by God, just as Aaron was. [HEB 5:1-4]
And consider the patience of our Lord as
salvation, as our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom
given to him, also wrote to you, speaking of these things as he
does in all his letters. In them there are some things hard to
understand that the ignorant and unstable distort to their own
destruction, just as they do the other scriptures. [2PT 3:15-16]

             When his mother's kin
repeated these words to them on his behalf, all the citizens of
Shechem sympathized with Abimelech, thinking, "He is our
              kinsman." [JUDG 9:3]
Now Saul heard that David and his men had been located. At the
time he was sitting in Gibeah under a tamarisk tree on the high
place, holding his spear, while all his servants were standing by.
So he said to them: "Listen, men of Benjamin! Will the son of
Jesse give all of you fields and vineyards? Will he make each of
you an officer over a thousand or a hundred men, that you have all
conspired against me and no one tells me that my son has made an
agreement with the son of Jesse? None of you shows sympathy for me
or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant to be an
enemy against me, as is the case today." [1SAM 22:6-8]
Saul replied: "The LORD bless you for your sympathy toward
me. Go now and make sure once more! Take note of the place where
he sets foot" (for he thought, perhaps they are playing some
trick on me). "Look around and learn in which of all the
various hiding places he is holding out. Then come back to me with
sure information, and I will go with you. If he is in the region,
I will search him out among all the families of Judah." [1SAM
              23:21-23]
Now when three of Job's friends heard of all the misfortune
that had come upon him, they set out each one from his own place:
Eliphaz from Teman, Bildad from Shuh, and Zophar from Naamath.
They met and journeyed together to give him sympathy and comfort.
But when, at a distance, they lifted up their eyes and did not
recognize him, they began to weep aloud; they tore their cloaks
and threw dust upon their heads. Then they sat down upon the
ground with him seven days and seven nights, but none of them
spoke a word to him; for they saw how great was his suffering. [JOB
              2:11-13]
Go not into a house of mourning, the LORD continued: go not
there to lament or offer sympathy. For I have withdrawn my
friendship from this people, says the LORD, my kindness and my
              pity. [JER 16:5]
But Daniel was resolved not to defile himself with the king's
food or wine; so he begged the chief chamberlain to spare him this
defilement. Though God had given Daniel the favor and sympathy of
the chief chamberlain, he nevertheless said to Daniel, "I am
afraid of my lord the king; it is he who allotted your food and
drink. If he sees that you look wretched by comparison with the
other young men of your age, you will endanger my life with the
king." Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief
chamberlain had put in charge of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and
Azariah, "Please test your servants for ten days. Give us
vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then see how we look in
comparison with the other young men who eat from the royal table,
and treat your servants according to what you see." He
acceded to this request, and tested them for ten days; after ten
days they looked healthier and better fed than any of the young
men who ate from the royal table. So the steward continued to take
away the food and wine they were to receive, and gave them
              vegetables. [DAN 1:8-16]
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin.
So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.
              [HEB 4:15-16]
Finally, all of you, be of one mind, sympathetic, loving toward one another, compassionate, humble.
Do not return evil for evil, or insult for insult; but, on the contrary, a blessing, because to this you were called, that you might inherit a blessing.

BIG Book of Latin Activities For Catholics
Beginning - Intermediate (Vol. 1)

"Suitable For Children Or
Adults!" ~ "Perfect For Home Schoolers!"
+ + +
As many faithful Catholics already know,
the majestic
Latin language – the 'official language' of the Catholic Church –
promotes unity, helps safeguard the purity of doctrine, connects us with
our Catholic ancestors, allows us to pray in "one voice", and even ties
back to the inscription on the Cross which was written in Hebrew, Latin,
and Greek. The Latin language is still used today in the precious
treasure that is the
Traditional Latin ('Tridentine') Mass, in 'everyday speech' (much of
English is derived from Latin), in mottos, in specialized fields, and in
educational endeavors. It has been shown that the study of Latin brings
many benefits. "And, Latin is truly the language of heaven!"
If you enjoy Latin, you may be glad to know that
this full-sized (8.5" x 11"), tradition-minded publication features an
assortment of activity types related to Latin (including: word searches,
crosswords, coloring activities, challenges, fill-ins, spelling bee,
quizzes, unscrambles, true/false, multiple choice, matching, cross-offs,
circling, word associations, translation exercises, and more...), and
treats of various topics (including: common Latin words, Latin language
facts, Latin grammar, nouns & verbs, abbreviations,
phrases / sayings / mottos, prefixes, cardinal numbers, grammatical gender,
inflection, word roots, diacritics / accenting, pronunciation, Latin
prayers / hymns, Scripture verses, Catholic phrases, and more...).
